Can a promoter sell our live performance?
PaulWarning replied to Muppet's topic in General Discussion
I tend to put a demo of any of my songs onto soundcloud in case of any copyright issues then register it with the PRS, not sure if this covers all the basses (see what I did there ) or not -
Which one was the hardest song you have learned and why?
PaulWarning replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in General Discussion
I have the same problem with SOPM. Having worked it out it just didn't seem to work with the band and then I realised it is due to having a very busy Drummer and Guitarist in the band and there really was too much going on. Had a listen to the Joss Stone version which is much simpler and works better with the "busy bees"..
I have this trouble with Monkey Man, can play the fast bass run on my own and with a drum machine but with the band I always struggle, mind you I've watched 3 bassists with other bands playing it and they all cheated. I'm currently trying to learn Rancids Time Bomb, it's a very fast walking bass line, I can manage it on 15% slower at the moment, hopefully muscle memory will kick in soon -
New Fender American Professional Series....
PaulWarning replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
I am a Fender fan but this is one price hike too far in my opinion. I played the new Jazz in Dawsons in Huddersfield. It was good, but not £1500 good. With so many excellent second hand Jazz deals around I don't ever see myself buying a new Fender again.
I would never buy new, and I'm a lefty, not only is it very upsetting when the first ding appears you're also paying 20% VAT, thankfully not everybody shares my opinion -
You want to match the bass to the song and you don't want to look like a plonker? Hmmmm, how can I be diplomatic? You must realise that no one (not even another bassist) will care two hoots whether the sound of different basses will match different songs or not. The sound of your best bass will match every song you play, as long as you sound good, play well and don't hit too many bum notes.
as Meatloaf might say "you took the words right out of my mouth" I once saw a band where the bass player had 4 basses which he changed round regularly, they all sounded the same, crap, or perhaps it was because he had the treble at 10 and the bass at 0 on his amp, I was shaking my head in disbelief, still do when I think about it, *Shakes Head*

Mann Guitars (who he?) copy of a Ripper
PaulWarning replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I see the listing has ended????? the guy also has no feedback, very suspicious -
if you're just after thickening up the sound a Behringer BDI21 is worth a punt at £25, I use a Zoom B1on same as KingBollock mentioned, infinity adjustable, from just thickening up the sound, my standard setting, to full on fuzz for ace of spades

oh yeah, if you are going to speak between songs speak clearly and slowly, too often the audience haven't got a clue what's being said, (mumbled)
not suggesting or jesting ( unfortunately ), stating my experience over the last several years
just after a guitarist joined the band we got asked to play Happy Birthday, do you know I says to him "yeah no problem" so off we go with me playing it in A and him in G
Non watch, music stand. clip on truner related comment. Waffle. That bit between songs when someone has to do something to avoid the awkward silence. As an audience member I can happily do without a few of things. Band in-jokes - Keep them for rehearsals. Personal non gig related stuff - I don't need to know about your life. Originals bands - I don't want an in depth analysis of what the next song is about. In fact any big gap between songs that stops the flow of the gig. I used to be guilty of this too until we played with a band who went on before us who went on endlessly 'This songs about the time I was at low point in my life. My cat knocked over my beer. My aunty had a hip replacement...Hey Gary on drums could do with one of them....etc." I saw myself but much worse. I limited myself to very brief, relevant intros. The drummer moaned about not getting enough time to wipe his sticks but it was a much punchier gig. Obviously as with all gig things context is king and working an audience is an asset. But if I'm watching a band I don't want to know if the clutch on your Astra needs replacing.
we always find that me and the singer insulting each other goes down well, a brief description of an originals song is fine as long as it doesn't turn into a monologue, you can go too far the other way, one song after the other with no interaction with the audience is bad as well

E bay...where have all the bargains gone?
Technically not, they used to but it was spun of into its own company in 2015. Paypal prices are not so bad compared to credit card charges. So if you were selling with credit cards you would have the same sort of fees, but as most people who are not companies don't notice that, they think paypal is bad.
there is some truth in that, although paypal fees are a bit high, if you try and pay for a holiday on credit card they charge you 4 or 5% -
of course give that the definition of Bigot is, and I copy and paste, 'a person who is intolerant towards those holding different opinions' means if you call somebody a bigot you are in fact a bigot

Has anyone gone from lightweight back to heavy?
PaulWarning replied to AndyTravis's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've spent good money on lightweight gear and have convinced myself (I didn't take much convincing) that I am totally happy with my class D amp and neo cab sound. It is entirely possible that a 60lb amp and a 100lb cab might give me a sound that I prefer very slightly, yes. But my 4lb amp and 40lb cab sound so nice that I'm really not bothered enough to find out. I can't see myself even thinking about changing my amp unless a} it dies or b} Trace make a dream come true and produce a small lightweight SMX head. (hint hint)
that's great, and if you're totally happy good for you, but then you mention a lightweight SMX head, I've got a SMX head and it weighs 13Kg, is it really that much effort to carry that around, it's an easy one handed lift, my partner carries it into the venue for me while I wrestle with a Fender Rumble 2 x 10 (16Kg), light weight cabs are great but light weight heads just seem a bit over the top to me. -
my SMX head is the same, only ever had it at half volume, and our drummer is bloody loud edit, but respect for carting one of those around for 8 years, I only managed 1 gig with a 1 x 15 T E combo I also found this info while looking to find out the power rating of the combo, might be of interest to other Trace SMX users Pre-Shape 1:+6dB at 50Hz and 2kHz, -6dB at 400Hz. Pre-Shape 2: +5dB at 100Hz, +3dB at 3kHz and -5dB at 650Hz.
I had a 1210HSMX (the H denoting a horn) from 1996 till around 2004. Loved it but ended up in a band where it just wasn't loud enough. Also had to have it seen to for dry solder joints. Weighed a ton and a bit.
300 trace watts wasn't loud enough? bloody hell

but what does it sound like when he's doing it live?

E bay...where have all the bargains gone?
PaulWarning replied to theplumber's topic in General Discussion
A top eBay tip (which I think I read on here) is to filter your searches by newly listed. That way, if anything has a low Buy It Now price you'll see it first. I did that when I was looking for a Matt Freeman, and got it for £195 BIN within an hour or it having been put on the site.
somebody got a Fender Rumble 500 head for £180 it had gone in about an hour, before Ebay had emailed me to say it was up for sale, of course it does mean you're constantly checking, could get very compulsive -
If they're going to take a commission of £85, a £1 listing fee is neither here nor there.
I may be wrong but I think there's a £75 limit on a selling price, but then on course there's paypal, that would take it up to £100 on a £850 sale, but, here's the rub, you are reaching a far bigger market so you're likely to get a better price, as BigRedX said it's a lot better than the old days when you used the local classified ads in the paper or the local music shop -
This has all got a bit out of hand since my facaetious comment about wearing two watches... Are there any more useful gig tips?
one thing I've found really useful is going wireless, unless you've got a soundman it's really useful to be able to go out into the room to see what you and the rest of the band sound like in the crowd, I found my bass can sound a lot different 30 feet away from the cab than standing in front of it

E bay...where have all the bargains gone?
PaulWarning replied to theplumber's topic in General Discussion
I think the reserve price stems from the days when your listing fee was based on the start price that you set. Therefore in order to minimise the listing fee, you started low and put a reserve price on your item. These days when everyone seems to have more than enough free listings - I've been selling on eBay for almost 10 years now and have never paid a penny in listing fees, the reserve price is somewhat redundant. Simply start your item at the minimum price you would like to get for it and go from there.
yeh I don't think they charge for listings at all these days, I've certainly not been charged for ages, which is why they've loaded the selling fees, makes sense, means you can list stuff knowing if it don't sell it costs you nothing unlike basschat -
I too use a fixed price, with "Make me an Offer". Or I use the auction starting at my bottom price or something near it. Gone are the days of starting it at 99p and hoping it'll find the market value. You'd be safe selling a Fender that way, but selling something obscure could be risky. Ebay's reserve prices are odd IMHO. You've got folk placing bids with an on-screen message saying "reserve not met". It's like "guess my bottom price". What gets me on Ebay is the 10% fees. I sell a bass at £850 and they get £85!!? If it was £42.50 it would be more acceptable. I've bought and sold on Gumtree and BC. BC is good for Fenders and Rays. Given the amount I've advertised that didn't sell on BC, I would go with you that the fees are, in my case, questionable VFM, but it does support the forum staying here.
yeh I don't get setting a reserve, why not just start the bidding off at what your reserve would be, when I see a reserve set it puts me off because you don't know where you are, if you had to start the bidding a 99p or what ever then I could understand it, but that's not the case -
E bay...where have all the bargains gone?
PaulWarning replied to theplumber's topic in General Discussion
I've never sold using a reserve. Only sold in an auction with a BIN. When the first bid landed the BIN disappeared.
I always sell with a buy it now and make me an offer, you get a few chancers but it's only an email and you don't have to answer it
I think the market is a bit odd at the moment in any case. I have had things on here doing nothing, then I pop them on evilbay with BIN & best offer and they have in the majority of cases sold for more that advertised on here. Even more odd that after fees etc I still made more that the price on here in at least half the cases. We're talking about 8-9 items overs the past 6 months. There's no doubt you get a wider audience, but maybe BC is not always the best place anymore. What do others think?
never used BC to be honest, I think you get a better price on Gumtree and Ebay (BCers are too well informed perhaps) and only ever bought one thing of BC, (in fact thinking about it I've never bought anything off Gumtree either), and the set fee on basschat puts me off -
Look at this idiot. I do like the way the photographer had a little joke by "framing" it with the girls arm.
pratt, look at the state of his bass, he must have been wearing his watch on the wrong wrist for ages to cause that much damage
-
Ah - going by your avatar, you play your bass the wrong way around anyway Easy to make a watch mistake doing that!
Ah you noticed, took me ages to get used to wearing my watch on the 'wrong' wrist after the Stingray incident, in fact on one occasion I spent 10 minutes look for my watch before realising I'd regressed to putting on my 'right' wrist, which is actually my left wrist, my brain hurts I'm going for a lie down
-
I bet you looked like a right weapon wearing that watch on stage. What were you thinking?
think? I don't think I play bass

on the subject of clip on tuners, totally useless when your drummer won't shut the f*** up, so an FX pedal with one built would be essential if anybody could notice when a bass is a bit out of tune, I never can, on the subject of wristwatches (how bizarre to even argue about them) essential when playing a pub gig with a strict curfew, you may know how long songs last but I haven't got a clue how long our singer is going to prattle on for or how long the drummer is going to spend messing about with his kick drum pedal or hi hat clutch or how long the guitarist is going spend tuning up or swapping guitars when he's broke a string (or even restarting a song because of it), on one occasion when we forgot to check the time we didn't even have time for our curtain call of Nellie the Elephant, what a disastrous gig that was. I do agree it needs to be worn on the fretting wrist after I scratched a near perfect Stingray with my metal strapped watch
