Cliff Richard new single Roll over Beethoven
PaulWarning replied to police squad's topic in General Discussion
http://www.youtube.c...oven+new+single oh dear, is this really the same bloke that made one of the best British Rock and Roll records (Move It) it's been downhill ever since, his voice is just too damned polite -
what does the Trace Elliot pre shape button do?
PaulWarning replied to PaulWarning's topic in Amps and Cabs
cheers guys, so it is just EQing I guess, I've got a series 6, 12 eq with just the one preshape, I do find it a bit extreme but do like the concept of it, ( it's never activated when in a band situation although I do cut the 6.3k Hz slider a lot ) I'll have to have another play around with it, the TE amp in the rehearsal room we use sounds terrible without the preshape activated, so I'm guessing they're not all the same -
just this really, I've tried to get the TE pre shaped sound by using the 12 band EQ and can't, does it do anything else besides presetting the EQ? if not does anybody know what frequencies it alters? I want to try and get the TE sound out of another amp using EQing
Ah! that might have solved the mystery then, I've not tried to do it for some time now, mainly because it never worked, but I've always highlighted and deleted in the past, and that's exactly what I did this time, which explains my surprise when it worked. Maybe I'm not that stupid then!
well if you are so am I, I had to ask about the backspacing method when the highlight and delete didn't work
-
It worked! I've tried this in the past thinking that it is the obvious thing to do, but I'm sure it never worked before.
at one time you had to use the backspace button to remove unwanted text, just highlighting it and deleting didn't work for some reason

How many times have you broken a string?
PaulWarning replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
it's the first string I've broken in 12 years (since I switched to bass from guitar) but it also the longest time I've gone without changing the strings, which is probably the reason, I should add I am a aggressive player who uses a 1mm pick -
We use the same configuration, a pair of HK Audio RS152x tops on tripod stands, and a pair of no-name monitor boxes. Our amp is a cheap 2x300w power amp, and we play in mono, so one side to the tops, the other side as monitor. Simple, inexpensive, good quality PA that has done a sterling job for the last decade or so. 3 vocal mic's and a touch of bass drum; on occasion a drum overhead in small outdoor gigs. Old school, yes, but it still works for most of the situations we play in.
we're about the same except we've used 15" passive Wharfdale Titans and a Yamaha EMX 312SC 12 mixer amp as well as the no name monitors for the last 10 years
I learn every note by memory even if it is a reading gig. If I can't play it all from memory, solo, then I'm not ready. I'll still perform it of course but I won't be happy that I'm under prepared.
I can play a lot of our set solo, doesn't mean I don't make mistakes though, lack of concentration sees to that

I think I probably rely on external reminders more than I think, one occasion springs to mind, the whole band started cocking up a Sex Pistols version of My Way, couldn't understand it till it was realised that the singer had swapped the 2nd and 3rd verses round without anybody twigging it. I do open micing and when someone asked me to sing copperhead rd without my guitar I forgot half the words, doing it while playing along with my guitar I have no trouble at all

How many times have you broken a string?
PaulWarning replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
well, I finally broke my first bass string at last nights gig, the A string at the bridge, must make a Google calendar note to change my DR neons every 6 months, luckily I had taken my spare bass into the pub with me, I did find out how much better a P bass cuts through them a Hondo professional ll though -
it may be just me but I find youtube videos of gear a bit of a waste of time, what they sound like on youtube and what they sound like live with you playing are 2 completely different things, just my opinion, no offence intended
But, again, if one is happy enough to pay the price asked, who's being 'ripped off'..? It's possible to buy a (relatively...) cheap car in India, if you can get there and drive it back. Not many people do; are all the others being 'ripped off' by UK prices because they 'can't be @rsed'..?
yep, if you never find out it was cheaper elsewhere, you'll be a happy bunny, but if you do find out, later, that it was a lot cheaper somewhere else you won't, but the result of people like me shopping round means cheaper prices, that's the good side of capitalism (just seen the above post)
-
not too bad now, but when our old guitarist and drummer were losing interest it was a nightmare, me or more usually the singer would be chasing gigs and they would take ages to answer emails and texts, I think it's appalling bad manners not to reply as soon as possible, it really pisses me off

only 10 years younger than Chuck Berry, another member of the 'how the hell did they get away with that' club, not as valuable to rock and Roll history as Chuck but still a very iconic figure, his playing style certainly set him apart from other bass players, holding his bass like a watering can was how I once heard it described

4-piece band + backing tracks for guitarist. Hmmmm...
PaulWarning replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
I always think it's cheating, if you're supposed to be a live band that's what it should be, same with loopers, very clever, but no different from using a backing track -
The kick drum underpins the music
no it doesn't a bass guitar does, a loud kick drum invades my frequency space, nothing worse than an overly loud kick drum IMO of course
-
our old guitarist was always tuning up, I think it was his way of saying "I didn't play a bum note I'm out of tune" yeah right! I play acoustic at open mic and never tune up apart from the start, mind you I haven't changed the strings in a year, hate new strings., If a bass is a bit out of tune nobody will notice anyway, well I don't
-
surely if you're using an unmiced drum kit, which we do (trust me it's loud enough for a pub gig) you need a backline loud enough so you and the drummer can hear what's going off (assuming no IEM) which, will be loud enough for the rest of the room as is the unmiced drum kit, if you see what I'm getting at, we take about 40 minutes to set up and at the end of the gig we're away in about 20 minutes which for me is a big plus There's also the aesthetics to consider, having a big backine is more Rock and Roll IMO of course
After reading this thread I've just booked my appointment for a test, hopefully leading to having a moulded set made. I've used the Christmas tree ones for years but never got used to them so often haven't bothered putting them in or wear only one. Not good. With the big six - oooh coming next May and over 40 years working in loud environments it's a wonder I've any hearing left. time for action at last. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. Frank.
not sure why you don't get on with the 'christmas tree' ones, I forget they're in, a word of caution amongst all this love for ACS's I've never really got on with mine, I feel very detached from the music, so much so that I wear just one, the side with the drummer and tinnitus (not unrelated I suspect), I wear a 'christmas tree' one in the other, which I suppose proves they don't block out as much as the ACS's

Chuck Berry hits 90 ... New Album for 2017
PaulWarning replied to skankdelvar's topic in General Discussion
I'll believe when I see it, I seem to remember he was due to release a new album about 20 years ago till the studio burnt down destroying all the masters, allegedly. It's still a mystery to me how such a cantankerous, nasty piece of work could make such perfect rock and roll records, but it shows in spite of what he says he's still in love with his music. I saw him about 25 years ago, front row seats and it was one of those shows where I got exactly what I was expecting, right down to the white crimplene flares, marvellous. -
there's also the way manufacturers measure watts, my Trace Elliot 200 watt SS head (at 4 ohms) is as loud if not louder than my Rumble 500 watt, and yes I use the same speaker cab it's been on here before but worth another look

you can exchange them for free, I changed to 10's because they were cutting too much out, but I'm a bit deaf anyway
I've played Butlins at Skeggy a couple of times...
They are not the greatest payers, so whether you get a good sound person can be a bit of a lottery. I tend to loo
you're not wrong there, the main acts last weekend, From the Jam, Tom Robinson, Stranglers had a great sound, (I'm assuming they had their own sound guys)but some of the others had the appalling boomy prominent bass drum to contend with, which made it sound very muddy indeed
