1.
I used to get told this when I was playing bass in a band. We took our music very seriously, rehearsed a lot, concentrated very intently on stage and never made a mistake. It felt great, but the sheer concentration definitely showed on my face Now I'm a bit more experienced I realise that no-one will notice little mistakes. I take it a lot less seriously and I enjoy it a lot more. Consequently I smile
ah, the advantage of playing bass, mistakes are less noticeable, apart from my partner, she attends most gigs and knows exactly when I make one of my frequent a cock ups
2.
This is why you practice isn't it? ;-) TBH the vast majority of the time no-one in the audience will notice. I've played half a song a semi-tone flat on more than one occasion because the on-stage sound was terrible and it was too dark for me to see the side dots on my bass with my mirror shades on… Not a single person has ever come up to me (or any of the other members of the band) to complain about poor playing, but we get plenty of compliments about how impressive the performance was!
some basschaters might look down their noses at this but it's got me out of trouble on dark stages (it's luminous sticky tape btw) sorry it's on a Fender
3.
The first gig I was too busy trying to hear the guitarist and remember the songs (I did better than the guitarist at that).
This, it's very difficult to move around and not look at the fret board unless you're really familiar with the songs
4. if people don't reply forget them, they'll always be unreliable, I don't expect a reply then I'm not disappointed, and if you get to rehearsals and they haven't learnt the parts dump them, if people aren't enthusiastic at the beginning of a project you've probably got no chance with them
5. you don't have to smile to but make it look like you're enjoying yourself, moving around or even tapping you foot can do it, cool and moody might have worked for a young Bill Wyman etc, but we haven't all got front men like Mick Jagger, I seen bands that look like they would rather be somewhere else than doing the gig (and it's usually the bass player), it's not good, I always say if you don't look like you're enjoying it how can yo expect the audience too? But you say you had a storming gig, so the band must be doing something right, are you all a bit miserable or is it just you?
6. I got hold of a Trace Elliot head (paid £125 for it), says 200 watts on the back, I played my first gig with it last night ( with 2 cabs), I had the input gain on 9 (the overload light didn't flash once) and the output on 2 (9 o clock) and got told to turn down!
7.
My apologies. I stand corrected. Ah well, at least it proves I don't Google to guarantee validity of my replies
neither do I, I look in the Guinness book of hit singles essential for any pop quiz nerd
8.
Jeans on David Dundas Eve of destruction Barry McGuire It's all too much Steve Hillage (if we're talking singles) Can't let Maggie go Honey bus Love grows Edison Lighthouse Kinky boots Patrick Macnee and Honour Blackman Do you wanna dance? Barry Blue Safety dance Men without hats
thought I'd get in before BRX David Dundas got to 29 with another funny honeymoon Barry Blue, do you wanna dance was a follow up to (Dancing) on a saturday night, which was a bigger hit here's another one I don't think has been mentioned Hedgehoppers Anonymous, It's Good News Week, a cracking record that doesn't get played because it was written and produced by Jonathan King
9.
OK, best use a thicker pick, then.
ok will do
10.
Turn your amp up.
I had a feeling someone would say that, but that would mess up the sound balance of the whole band, just because you can't hear yourself clearly doesn't mean you're too quiet in the mix
11. I've tried thinner picks (I use 94mm at the moment and 60mm for acoustic guitar) I find that when I can't hear myself clearly I start hitting the strings harder, the thin picks (60mm) just bend too much
12. puff the magic dragon had me in tears, but I was about 8 at the time
13. the Rattles - The Witch Nena - 99 Red Ballons Crazy Elephant - Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' (possible the most badly played guitar solo, ever) and what Forest Fan could ever forget, Nottingham Forest FC and Paper Lace - We've got the whole world in our hands
14.
Having said that, you have to remember that most punters actually listen to (or hear) the singer more than anything else.
this is very true, when you know what the lyrics are it's very easy to have the vocals too low, they always need to be on top of the mix
15. you might be better off on evil bay with this, some artist still use them for backing tracks, well that's how I got rid of mine
16. we set up, only use the PA for vocals, I wonder out front because I'm wireless, remembering to leave my hearing aids in for the sound check, 1234, into Rockaway Beach, maybe a bit of twiddling, usually the guitar up or down, do a bit of Another Girl Another Planet to make sure the guitarists solo aren't to loud, warm the smoke machine up and then hang around to do the gig
17.
Would be handy to know your budget and if there's any transport issues. Ashdown stuff is OK also old trace elliot gear is good value and rarely struggles to keep up with even the loudest drummers.
+1 for Trace Gear their watts are twice as loud as anybody else's, Fender rumble 500 have got a rep for being loud, but my T E 300 watt combo is just as loud if not louder (I've got both btw)
18. I have to have my amp louder at rehearsals than for gigs because we're in a smallish room the drums are bouncing off everywhere, maximum strength ear plugs, ridiculous really
19. Thunderclap Newman had another top 50 hit with Accidents, IMO a bloody awful record but the Jazz (not the Bass) lovers on here might find it interesting
20.
I'd argue the Ruts weren't a one hit wonder, they appeared on Top of the Pops with 3 different singles.. Babylons Burning was their highest chart position tho, Good old local lads from Southall and the first Punk Band I ever saw.
yep the Ruts had top 30 hits with something that I said (number 29) Staring at the Rude Boys (22), saw them at last years Strummer Festival how Segs Jennings playing all downstrokes with a pick on Babylons Burning is something I can only aspire too, no mug at finger style either
21. Rezilloes - Top of the pops Ten Pole - Tudor Swords of a Thousand Men Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes Toy Dolls - Nellie the Elephant (bit iffy that one) Jilted John - Jilted John Joey Ramone - Wonderful World all in our set except the Rezilloes, plus the Only Ones, already mentioned, the saying is "everybody has got one good song in them"
22.
If it's a longer and thinner rocker than the main power switch then it's probably the ground isolation control to help reduce hum when connecting to external gear.
I think that's the one, cheers
23. just got hold of GP12 series 6 amp, anybody know what the black rocker switch does on the back? maybe something to do with the ohms load?
24. always played with a pick, after coming over from the dark side, and all the bass players that inspired me play with a pick, Macca J J Burnell etc, I use a Dunlop fluorescent luminous nylon 94mm picks and rest my wrist on the body of the bass and like someone else mentioned I have my bass low, if I play it sitting down resting on my knee my elbow soon starts to ache, but like anything else it takes practice, I've tried finger style but playing almost exclusively punk couldn't see the point so I never stuck at it
25. no, I like some Neil Young stuff, but not this one particularly, still wouldn't do for us all to like the same stuff would it? otherwise everybody would love or hate the Beatles
