Hi, It's only common sense to communicate with each other regularly, I hold the main diary and have the whole year's gigs on computer which I email to the band and if anyone books a holiday or weekend away they ring me and I take those dates out of the diary and re-email to all so we all know what the other is doing,
yeah but any system relies on band members keeping it up to date, it just seems beyond some people

there's a similar thread going on about unreliable people in regards to looking for a new band, I can't stand unreliable people (unfortunately like bad time keepers they'll never change) it's just plain bad manners to keep letting people down so I know your pain

You personal Pop 25, pop pickers... not 'arff!

no I don't do playlists either, just got my mp3 player on shuttle, it's got about 5000 tracks on it, quite like not knowing what's coming next -
very very very annoying, we have a google calender that all the band can access, works most of the time, our singer insists on a normal diary as well so he cocks up occasionally but he does most of the bookings, so he has to sort out his own mistakes, all I can say is guitarists are the easiest members to replace, and no, he has no right to object if you made it clear that band calenders need to be up to date as you're booking gigs,
...or you're Seasick Steve.
yep, he's the exception that proves the rule (never really understood that saying) that's why I put 'probably'
Ageism is still very real in music,
Certainly is, if you haven't made by 30 you probably never will, unless you're in a band where everybody else is considerable younger then you, (then you may well get the boot at the first whiff of a record deal, does the ex Jake Bugg bass player still come on here?)and lets be honest after that age you've probably got past the stage of travelling hundreds of miles to play a 30 minute set to 10 people (the other band members on the same 4 band bill) for no money then sleeping on the floor of a transit, not many under 30's can keep that up for long either
Actually anyone still sporting a beard is already painfully out of date.
oh! I've got a sort of beard, grew it in a pitiful attempt to hide some of my wrinkles, does help with the scrawny neck though

have you tried advertising yourself?, give your age and what you're looking for, nothing to lose have you? I got back on the horse at 53 that was 10 years ago and this will be our busiest year for gigs, you might have to settle for a covers band though

Trying to look a little more cheerful on stage :-/

making an effort to dress up a bit helps IMO, nothing worse than seeing a band looking like they've just walked off a building site (and the regulation black T shirt with some bands name on, scruffy ill fitting denim jeans and dirty trainers isn't much better) makes it look like you really can't be bothered -
I used to get told this when I was playing bass in a band. We took our music very seriously, rehearsed a lot, concentrated very intently on stage and never made a mistake. It felt great, but the sheer concentration definitely showed on my face Now I'm a bit more experienced I realise that no-one will notice little mistakes. I take it a lot less seriously and I enjoy it a lot more. Consequently I smile
ah, the advantage of playing bass, mistakes are less noticeable, apart from my partner, she attends most gigs and knows exactly when I make one of my frequent a cock ups -
This is why you practice isn't it? ;-) TBH the vast majority of the time no-one in the audience will notice. I've played half a song a semi-tone flat on more than one occasion because the on-stage sound was terrible and it was too dark for me to see the side dots on my bass with my mirror shades on… Not a single person has ever come up to me (or any of the other members of the band) to complain about poor playing, but we get plenty of compliments about how impressive the performance was!
some basschaters might look down their noses at this but it's got me out of trouble on dark stages (it's luminous sticky tape btw) sorry it's on a Fender -
The first gig I was too busy trying to hear the guitarist and remember the songs (I did better than the guitarist at that).
This, it's very difficult to move around and not look at the fret board unless you're really familiar with the songs -
if people don't reply forget them, they'll always be unreliable, I don't expect a reply then I'm not disappointed, and if you get to rehearsals and they haven't learnt the parts dump them, if people aren't enthusiastic at the beginning of a project you've probably got no chance with them

you don't have to smile to but make it look like you're enjoying yourself, moving around or even tapping you foot can do it, cool and moody might have worked for a young Bill Wyman etc, but we haven't all got front men like Mick Jagger, I seen bands that look like they would rather be somewhere else than doing the gig (and it's usually the bass player), it's not good, I always say if you don't look like you're enjoying it how can yo expect the audience too? But you say you had a storming gig, so the band must be doing something right, are you all a bit miserable or is it just you? -
I got hold of a Trace Elliot head (paid £125 for it), says 200 watts on the back, I played my first gig with it last night ( with 2 cabs), I had the input gain on 9 (the overload light didn't flash once) and the output on 2 (9 o clock) and got told to turn down!
My apologies. I stand corrected. Ah well, at least it proves I don't Google to guarantee validity of my replies
neither do I, I look in the Guinness book of hit singles essential for any pop quiz nerd
Jeans on David Dundas Eve of destruction Barry McGuire It's all too much Steve Hillage (if we're talking singles) Can't let Maggie go Honey bus Love grows Edison Lighthouse Kinky boots Patrick Macnee and Honour Blackman Do you wanna dance? Barry Blue Safety dance Men without hats
thought I'd get in before BRX David Dundas got to 29 with another funny honeymoon Barry Blue, do you wanna dance was a follow up to (Dancing) on a saturday night, which was a bigger hit here's another one I don't think has been mentioned Hedgehoppers Anonymous, It's Good News Week, a cracking record that doesn't get played because it was written and produced by Jonathan King
OK, best use a thicker pick, then.
ok will do
-
Turn your amp up.
I had a feeling someone would say that, but that would mess up the sound balance of the whole band, just because you can't hear yourself clearly doesn't mean you're too quiet in the mix
-
I've tried thinner picks (I use 94mm at the moment and 60mm for acoustic guitar) I find that when I can't hear myself clearly I start hitting the strings harder, the thin picks (60mm) just bend too much

puff the magic dragon had me in tears, but I was about 8 at the time

the Rattles - The Witch Nena - 99 Red Ballons Crazy Elephant - Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' (possible the most badly played guitar solo, ever) and what Forest Fan could ever forget, Nottingham Forest FC and Paper Lace - We've got the whole world in our hands
Having said that, you have to remember that most punters actually listen to (or hear) the singer more than anything else.
this is very true, when you know what the lyrics are it's very easy to have the vocals too low, they always need to be on top of the mix
