or singer uses ear plugs, which means he's always asking us to turn up the monitors so he can hear himself, I always smile, sort of defeats the object of ear plugs I would have thought, IEM is another thread btw

Double Albums That Work and the One That Don't

most double albums would've been a lot better as a single one, to quote the Clash, cut the crap and they should've -
Google brings up plenty of electrocuted musicians, un earthed mic being a favourite, that floating earth that a PROPERLY done PAT test would find those faults, I've come across plenty of PA systems that make your lips tingle when you go near the mic.
that's happened to me too, but only when using someone else's PA, that's probably a bigger danger, you know your own gear, you do a visual inspection every time you set it up without even realising it, but when using a provided PA which always includes mics who knows what state it's in, I think I'll ask for PAT certificate next time we have to use one
And if your PA crushes someone's head when it falls over you'll be sued for several million. Even if you don't have a house to take (they will if you do) your earnings will be subject to a garnishee order for the rest of your natural life. Or you could have a PL policy for under £100 per year.
with the size of our PA I more likely to win the lottery than that to happen and I don't even buy a ticket, doesn't the venue have to have liability insurance? the only way something like that would happen is if it got knocked over by an over enthusiastic crowd then that would be the venues fault for not controlling them properly. Can anyone give an example of when a band has had to use public liability insurance? or how many musicians were killed last year by faulty equipment? You can spend your whole life worrying about a chance in a billion happening
-
I assume everyone who is out gigging had public liability insurance, you get it free with MU membership, the insurance won't cover you if you're equipment isn't PAT tested. It's a big risk going out without insurance, there's such a large risk of someone getting injured because of your gear, particularly during get-outs.
no, it's yet another cost and layer of bureaucracy to bands that just play at the pub a couple of times a month, it's a hobby not a profession for most people
Firstly I admit I've never tried IEM's, but a bug bear of mine from an audience stand point, is poor sound when a whole band goes through a PA for pubs. Personally I think it sounds much better just putting the vocals through the PA, and everything else goes through the back line with the volume dictated by how loud the drummer is. Obviously for larger venues a PA is needed. It appears that I'm in a minority though! To be honest I'm rarely impressed by the sound of professional bands in a large venue where the sound is: Bass - an indeterminable rumble, the guitars - a trebly mess, and the only thing that sounds good is the drums and occasionally the vocals. I think some engineers try and recreate the sound of a CD where nothing has any room to breathe, which in my humble, or possibly misguided opinion, is the wrong way to go for live music. I'll get my coat....
no need to get your coat, these are my thoughts exactly, whenever we play a gig with a full PA my heart sinks, all what you said and a kick drum that that is top of the mix, we've got a fairly regular (small) following and they all say we sound best when we do our own sound (just vocals through the PA), this is where IEM fall down, unless you go to the hassle of micing everything up it's going to be a problem getting a good mix to the IEM, and if you do it means lugging around a bigger PA loads of mics and stands plus extra time setting up, at the moment we're ready to go in about 30 minutes. I still like to hear from anyone who has successfully used IEM with just the vocals through the PA
Not quite OT, but intrigued by this. Can you try out an iem system for the singer, giving him the same mix as his current floor monitor, but with an added ambience mic picking up the rest of the stage..? Any half-decent mic facing rearwards near the front of the stage would do (maybe even clipped to his own mic stand..? He'd get to hear all the band, at any level he needs, plus his own vocals. All you need is a spare mic and a spare channel on the console. No good..? Sounds odd, to me, to wear ear protection and then turn up the monitors; I could be wrong, though. Just sayin'.
this has crossed my mind, but really if we're using the back line and not boosting it through the PA, unless the IEM are exceptional at being ear plugs we shouldn't need anything else other than vocals going through them, trouble is he seems very reluctant to try this for some reason, just always says he can't afford them, which is bollocks really, he spends a fortune on going to gigs and buying CD's, I think the real reason is he doesn't understand them, he's a bit of Luddite, I'll keep trying though
-
depends on the band obviously but no back line is so not rock and roll, the show includes the look as well as the sound, having said that I'm trying without much success to get our singer to use them, trouble is we don't mic anything up, so not sure how it would work, the singer uses ear plugs and we have to have the monitor loud so he can hear himself
JapanAxe you are so right about tweeters
yep couldn't agree more, I've got an on/off tweeter switch on my Rumble, it's makes sod all difference. if it did I'd be worried
Why choose between them? Have both!!!!!
I have, a fender rumble 500 with a TE 1 x 15 underneath it, but some bassists on here reckon you shouldn't mix speaker sizes, I say use your ears
We were asked once for a PAT certificate before we could play in a very posh hotel in Henley.... and when we got to the hotel we were playing in the cellar bar and the state of the electrics in there was frightening (or shocking)! I couldn't resist saying (in a too loud voice) when the manager was nearby something about the irony of being asked for certification to play in such a dodgy looking place.
someone once posted in a similar thread, "if they ask for your PAT certificate ask them for their mains test certificate" something like that anyway
-
we've only been asked twice in 10 years, first time we got all the gear tested and they never asked for the certificate when we got there, the last time we got some blank stickers and said we couldn't find the cert, they were happy with that, they only ask to dot the i's and t's for insurance purposes, just keep your gear in good nick, a visual inspection to make sure all the cables are clamped and there's no bare wires or broken plastic bits you should be fine
-
It'll be fine, it's easy to talk to people you've got something in common with, just chat about the bands you like, find some common ground, I also finds it puts people at ease if you don't big yourself up to much, a bit of good natured self depreciation usually goes down well

I too have a love of 15" speakers, I know I know that there's plenty on here that say you can shift just as much air with 2 x 10" but a 15 just sounds gutsier to me
There are plenty well known songs that would sound completely lame if you just "follow the chords", to pick some random ones out of the air - Tears of a Clown, Run to You, Rio, and the cant-be-arsed-to-learn-it-properly brigades eternal favourite for butchery All Right Now, and then you can throw in for bonus points pretty much every song by Level 42, Rush, the jam and various other bands with notable highly stylistic players, and oh yeah Comfortably Numb (apparently) ...
some songs work with 'standard' bass part (usually ones without a prominent bass line) but try Eton Rifles or In the City without the right bass line and the song will be completely ruined

Lennon said The Beatles are more popular than Jesus to an English journalist and was reported as such in England, never caused a mumour (and he was probably right as well) then it got reprinted in the USA and all hell broke loose, because some our transatlantic cousins are a tad excitable about that sort of thing, the Beatles are still more popular than Jesus, based on how long and numerous Beatles threads are on Basschat anyway

I've played stuff wrong (I Fought the law for example), then realised it and corrected it, did anybody notice, did they f***, I play in an Old Skool punk band if we're doing punky covers I try and get it right (have to cheat sometimes cos I'm not good enough) but if we're punking up a non punk song then I put my own interpretation on it.
Don't worry about it. He's a drummer, so his hearing is ruined.
so's mine, and he's a lot younger than me

after being soundly thrashed for expressing the opinion that there wasn't much difference between a front pickup Jazz and a precision (a little impetuous on my part) at last nights gig I used my Squier Jazz for the first half and my MIA P for the second half, I asked the drummer if he could tell any difference to which he replied "the first one was a lot louder" I suppose he means it cut through better, which did piss me off a bit, the Squier Jazz cost £150 the MIA P £850

Best strings for a horrible, sweaty man like me?
PaulWarning replied to biggriffer's topic in Accessories and Misc
used to use Elixers they have a very different feel to them very smooth, I now use DR neons, they're coated and last ages but they feel like normal strings
