the marshall MB450H, I had the combo version with ext cab, which took it down to 2 ohms, seriously loud good sound IMO, I only got rid of it because it weighed so much
-
if I had to stop gigging I'd stop playing bass (not likely at the moment), IMO it's not much fun on your own, I also do open mics and the occasional gig playing acoustic guitar and singing with my partner on a small drum kit, now that is enjoyable playing on my own, but without open mics the incentive wouldn't be there. Guess I'm just a whore for applause :-)

without exception all my favourite bass players play a 4 that's good enough for me, I don't even like playing below low G, tend to play the octive

another 'small venues closing down' thread
PaulWarning replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
It won't die, but it will never be as popular as it was back in The 60s & 70s.. Blue
no, but it will become a minority movement, mostly based on nostalgia, like all the other forms of music and entertainment that were popular in their day, in fact it's getting that way now really -

cheers, I did wonder if that was the reason, shame it appears in my notifications box though -
just seen this http://www.independent.co.uk/student/istudents/small-music-venues-in-the-uk-are-under-threat-and-we-need-to-do-something-drastic-about-it-a6825456.html surely the real reason they're closing down is lack of people going to them, the youngsters today would rather be doing other stuff than watching new bands in small venues. Most of the audience these days seems to be middle age, which could explain why classic rock covers bands are on at all the local pubs and old bands and artists living on past glories are the most lucrative tours. Somebody once said Rock and Roll will never die, I'm not so sure
-
perhaps I should add I do add a bit of distortion and tend to like a low mid sound rather than a really low bass sound, so it's probably the way I'm using them, the Jazz certainly loses bottom end when the bridge pick up is dialled in, but hey, the Squier Jazz is certainly great value for money, I've had a 90's MIM Jazz before and this one is loads better
-
I've just bought a Squier VM Jazz and to I can tell very little difference between that on the neck pickup only and my MIA Precision, the jazz is a shade more trebly and a bit noisier (but not with both pickups on) but that's it, used it at practice last night and it cut through just fine, I'm a bit gutted actually, so if you're after the best of both worlds I don't really see the point of the P/J configuration to be honest.

I realise that there are few fellow bassist on here that do ok in originals bands and good luck to them that's why I said probably, I know one or two bands that have built up a bit of a following but to do that you have to play all over the country quite often to small crowds, driving to a far off gig is not too bad but the 2 or 300 mile drive back and getting home in the early hours is not something I want to do on a regular basis. You could say that shows lack of commitment and you're probably right, but there's only so long I want to hit my head against a brick wall.
I was offered a gig with a Kate Bush tribute band who had a bit of a revolving door of bass players a couple of years ago, I turned it down as I was in two originals bands at the time, and didn't want to be out constantly. I figured the bass gig would come round again, and the offer would come up again. It didn't, I wish I had taken it, one of those originals bands was a proper shambles and only rehearsed twice. I would have had the time. Their current bassist seems very happy, and unlikely to leave (and is on this thread, being smug about it) I regret everything, tribute bands are fun, and pay money, and get you big venues with full crowds.
I don't know how old you are, and this is only my opinion, but originals bands are probably a waste of time if you're over 30, unless you want to do music that hardly anybody else is interested in and you only want to do a handful of unpaid gigs a year

thought it was Foo's tribute band for a minute I use audacity to it slow down and raise the pitch by an octive it really makes the bass stand out in the mix

Do you listen to the Lyrics or the Music.?
PaulWarning replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
the song that always reminds me most people don't listen to lyrics is Rocking in the Free World, everybody was playing it when the Berlin wall came down but the song is actually an anti capitalist -
I've increased the relief, the necks looks pretty straight to me, stopped the rattle up to fret 5 but it's worse after that, I suppose everything's a compromise, maybe I'm just being too picky, I asked the original question because I wondered whether any other pick players had this issue, that is, pick players need a higher action, I use a 1mm pick by the way, I only paid £135 for the bass so it's not worth spending money on it
-
don't think it's unlevel frets, rattle is consistent all the way down the board, I'm not too concerned about measuring it, like some others I just keep raising it till it's stops rattling, or at least is not too bad, I measured my MIA P and found that at 4mm as well but that doesn't rattle as much as the Squire (could it be because it's a maple neck?). As for neck relief I adjust it till frett rattle is the same all the way down the board Lozz, I imagine you must hit the strings not very hard or like a lot of fret rattle, I had mine at about 2.5mm once but I soon as I got in a gig situation, where I can get carried away it was too low, I thought my tone suffered. When the action is at 4mm it does look high though, but I very rarely get higher than the 5th fret so I don't suppose it matters much

melody line for me, I've sang along to songs numerous times and never understood the lyrics, or even sang the wrong lyrics, however, since I've been singing at open mics and had to learn the lyrics properly I do understand and appreciate them a lot more, funny thing is all the songs I like have decent lyrics, or perhaps I like the lyrics because I like the song. Never understood Mrs Robinson though, the lyrics made no sense until I found out it was written a bout the USA presidents wife Mrs Roosevelt and Paul Simon just changed the name to get it into the Graduate film. Crap lyrics do put me off a song -
just been messing about with the action on a Squier VM Jazz I've just bought, now I play with a pick and give it some welly but the bottom E is still rattling somewhat with the action at 4mm on the 12 fret. What height do other pick players have to set their height at? I read somewhere the likes of Dee Dee Ramone had their heights very high, wonder how high very high is?
Because a hard case isn't much use if you have a 30 minute walk to your rehearsal or you travel a lot with your bass on public transport. It's all about having the right case for the job. Sometimes you need a gig bag, sometimes a hard case and sometimes only a full flight case will do.
I thought about that after I posted, I always use a car, so there's my answer
-
you can get a hard case for £30 - £40, would offer better protection, is there a reason people go for gig bags instead?

New drummer found, now guitarist is off on one...
PaulWarning replied to AndyTravis's topic in General Discussion
isolate the guitarist's sound, turn his cab away or something, or position your cab right next to him, so it's mostly just you the drummer can hear, then see what happens, having said that it's better the drummer is speeding up, I've played with a couple that slowed down, bloody awful -
Shouldn't be, I have exactly that myself. Love the VM necks EDIT: Just check the shape of the end of the neck against the cavity on the body, they should be the same shape but there were a few variations (on the Fender body side) depending on what you have.
cheers, I'll have a look, didn't want to mess about with it if there was no chance of it fitting
-
yes I think that's the yardstick I would use, if there's no chance of seeing the original band, the Bootleg Beatles for instance, I've no problem at all with them, but I do feel a little uneasy about Green Day tributes
They could also - and I appreciate this is a radical concept - arrange their own festival, only featuring bands that play original material.
chances are that not as many people would turn up though, festivals are organised to make money, we're slaves to the paying public
