1.
Turn your amp up.
I had a feeling someone would say that, but that would mess up the sound balance of the whole band, just because you can't hear yourself clearly doesn't mean you're too quiet in the mix
2. I've tried thinner picks (I use 94mm at the moment and 60mm for acoustic guitar) I find that when I can't hear myself clearly I start hitting the strings harder, the thin picks (60mm) just bend too much
3. puff the magic dragon had me in tears, but I was about 8 at the time
4. the Rattles - The Witch Nena - 99 Red Ballons Crazy Elephant - Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' (possible the most badly played guitar solo, ever) and what Forest Fan could ever forget, Nottingham Forest FC and Paper Lace - We've got the whole world in our hands
5.
Having said that, you have to remember that most punters actually listen to (or hear) the singer more than anything else.
this is very true, when you know what the lyrics are it's very easy to have the vocals too low, they always need to be on top of the mix
6. you might be better off on evil bay with this, some artist still use them for backing tracks, well that's how I got rid of mine
7. we set up, only use the PA for vocals, I wonder out front because I'm wireless, remembering to leave my hearing aids in for the sound check, 1234, into Rockaway Beach, maybe a bit of twiddling, usually the guitar up or down, do a bit of Another Girl Another Planet to make sure the guitarists solo aren't to loud, warm the smoke machine up and then hang around to do the gig
8.
Would be handy to know your budget and if there's any transport issues. Ashdown stuff is OK also old trace elliot gear is good value and rarely struggles to keep up with even the loudest drummers.
+1 for Trace Gear their watts are twice as loud as anybody else's, Fender rumble 500 have got a rep for being loud, but my T E 300 watt combo is just as loud if not louder (I've got both btw)
9. I have to have my amp louder at rehearsals than for gigs because we're in a smallish room the drums are bouncing off everywhere, maximum strength ear plugs, ridiculous really
10. Thunderclap Newman had another top 50 hit with Accidents, IMO a bloody awful record but the Jazz (not the Bass) lovers on here might find it interesting
11.
I'd argue the Ruts weren't a one hit wonder, they appeared on Top of the Pops with 3 different singles.. Babylons Burning was their highest chart position tho, Good old local lads from Southall and the first Punk Band I ever saw.
yep the Ruts had top 30 hits with something that I said (number 29) Staring at the Rude Boys (22), saw them at last years Strummer Festival how Segs Jennings playing all downstrokes with a pick on Babylons Burning is something I can only aspire too, no mug at finger style either
12. Rezilloes - Top of the pops Ten Pole - Tudor Swords of a Thousand Men Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes Toy Dolls - Nellie the Elephant (bit iffy that one) Jilted John - Jilted John Joey Ramone - Wonderful World all in our set except the Rezilloes, plus the Only Ones, already mentioned, the saying is "everybody has got one good song in them"
13.
If it's a longer and thinner rocker than the main power switch then it's probably the ground isolation control to help reduce hum when connecting to external gear.
I think that's the one, cheers
14. just got hold of GP12 series 6 amp, anybody know what the black rocker switch does on the back? maybe something to do with the ohms load?
15. always played with a pick, after coming over from the dark side, and all the bass players that inspired me play with a pick, Macca J J Burnell etc, I use a Dunlop fluorescent luminous nylon 94mm picks and rest my wrist on the body of the bass and like someone else mentioned I have my bass low, if I play it sitting down resting on my knee my elbow soon starts to ache, but like anything else it takes practice, I've tried finger style but playing almost exclusively punk couldn't see the point so I never stuck at it
16. no, I like some Neil Young stuff, but not this one particularly, still wouldn't do for us all to like the same stuff would it? otherwise everybody would love or hate the Beatles
17. tort scratch plates on anything but white Headless basses any manufacturer that doesn't do left-handed versions, with the same aesthetics, at the same price as right handed models, bastards
18. slightly different but there's a similar thread live at the moment http://basschat.co.uk/topic/280453-i-need-ear-protection/page__st__30
19. I see AC/DC have cancelled their tour because Brian Johnson would lose his hearing, surely they could use top notch ear plugs with built in monitors?
20.
I think we've had this conversation before. IMO you're endangering the only good ear you've got left.
yeah you're probably right, rock and roll, edit, sorry just reread this, didn't mean to be flippant, personally I've decided to risk it so I still enjoy playing gigs, which I don't with the feeling of detachment I get using ACS pro's in both ears
21. I've got some ACS pro 10's with mixed results, if I use them in both ears I feel horribly isolated ( started with 17's they were even worse) I they do take out more top end than anything else, I use the ACS's in the ear with tinnitus , which is the side I have the drummer on and a generic one in the other ear so I can hear what's going on better, mind you I already have hearing loss (around the 2 - 8K hz range) so someone with good hearing might have a different experience
22. heads up, bargain http://basschat.co.uk/topic/280589-trace-elliot-7215smc-combo/page__pid__2997653#entry2997653
23. I've got one of these (and a Rumble that I see in the picture) great combo, I thought I'd got a bargain at £135, the thing to remember is Trace watts are twice as loud as anybody else's, it's louder than the Rumble and that's rated at 500 watts with an extension cab, shame it's not as light as the Rumble though :-)
24.
But IMO fair. I was a massive Clash fan based on their first two albums, but was so underwhelmed by London Calling. At the time of its release I really liked the single and then that was about it. I recently revisited it as my musical tastes have somewhat broadened in the past 30 or so years and found that I now like "Lost In The Supermarket" as well. And yes I know "Armegideon Time" isn't on the album, but in light of the weakness of the other material it really should have been there and not relegated to the B-side of the single.
I know what you mean about it being a disapointment at the time after the first 2 albums, I too was underwhelmed at first, it was a big depeature from the punky stuff, but over the years I've got to really like the first record, still don't bother with the second one
25.
There can be disadvantages... yesterday (Sunday) we were obliged to turn up at 4:30pm for a soundcheck, which would have been fine but for the fact we weren't on stage until 9:00pm. So at least 4 hours hanging around. Mind you we sounded bloody brilliant and got loads of positive comments about the sound. What was I complaining about again..?
sounds like a nightmare, I hate hanging around between sound checks and the gig, plus band members get bored and drink to much
