1. this subjects been done a few times now, here's one http://basschat.co.uk/topic/182561-superb-cover-versions/page__hl__cover+versions__fromsearch__1
2. IMO a lot of it has to do with the modern fashion of having a loud clicky bass drum, so to give some bottom end (which is what the bass drum should be for) they use the bass which means no definition, a lot of recordings suffer from this as well.
3. not a bass but I was interested in a Yamaha APX700 electro acoustric, now being cack handed it was proving difficult to locate one in stock so I could try one, tried about 6 Yamaha stockists, no we don't stock them was always the answer but "we can order you one" (if I was going to buy one without trying it I'd use the internet) the classic one was "if you come in I'll get one of the guys to play a right handed one for you" In the end I bought one off ebay second hand which I'm very happy with
4.
I can cover staffs for collecting it back, I'm sure we can relay it back between us? Im a spiteful bastard so if it were mine I'd always rather get it back and smash it to bits before letting someone have it for half the price because of new dubious marks

Where does the buyer live?
I felt the same way Pete but I'm also a pragmatist, £60 is better than nothing, I've drawn a line under it now and moved on with a lesson learned, the buyer lived in Somerset.
5.
Has anyone actually read what the OP wrote? He's not asking you to answer here, but to PM or email him ...
Not much fun if we can't see everybody's answers is it? I always thought that was the idea of a forum
6. can't be bothered to answer all the questions, I use an electric tuner built into my zoom 506II pedal, yes I'm happy, nobody notices if a bass is a bit out of tune anyway, IMO as ever
7.
Gear going wrong after over a years use isn't exactly the fault of the retailer.
you're absolutely right of course, but just goes to show not all their stuff is top quality, just trying to put a slightly different slant onto the thomann love in.
8. bought a smoke machine from them once, came with a funny looking plug on it, had to cut it off and put a super duper UK one on, oh, and the bloody thing went up in the wrong kind of smoke after a year and a bit
9. I never watch TV ads, I record everything then skip through them, I'd like to thank everybody that does though, they help provide my programmes for nothing (apart from the Beeb ones obviously)
10. trouble with not using ebay is your potential customer market is so much smaller, so you probably don't get such a good price, I know whenever I'm looking for an item ebay is my first point of call. I've got another acoustic guitar on there at the moment,(being a lefty it's the only way I can try guitars before deciding which one is for me) I've stipulated a minimum of 25 feedback and I'll be taking extensive photo's of it before it goes off. Not being able to give negative feedback to a buyer is a mystery to me
11. arpmo, (acronyms really piss me off)
12. we use a Yamaha EMX 512SC mixer amp a couple of Whafedale titans and a cheapo monitor, plenty good enough for your average pub gig, usually just lead vocal and two backing vocals, occasionally we'll mic up the snare, bass drum and guitar, but not very often
13.
That's actually a great idea. There's more chance of them doing something original and constructive within a band situation. Most keyboard players want to dominate every damn song and as far as they're concerned, the band are there to support them, much like a concert painist. Wronggg!!!! And the worst thing is, they insist on encroaching on the bass player's frequency territory with their busy, crappy and ill-considered left-hand work!! Then they swan about the place like divas, act up, whinge and moan and generally make me want to punch them! Grr!
So perhaps the ad should read 'keyboard player with only a right hand need apply' never fancied being in a band with a keyboard player, less so after reading this thread
14. sometimes people don't pull their weight because they're incapable of showing any initiative, asking them politely to do something specific usually works, as in the case of our singer helping with the setting up of the PA, your keyboard player sounds like he's beyond that, you're right to dump him, the rest might fall into line than, with a bit of guidance.
15.
I still don't get why originals bands don't expect to be paid. We started asking for expenses as a minimum from our 5th gig onwards, and these days we come away with at least enough to cover the day-to-day running costs of the band (rehearsal space etc.) as well as being fed and watered, and any left over goes into the recording and promotional fund. IME there is money available from venues and promoters for originals bands. However most never ask so they simply don't get.
Well I did say when starting out, obviously if you can build up a following it makes a difference. But I agree with your asking comment, most originals bands are happy enough to get a decent support slot to a 'known' band
16. probably the main difference here is between covers bands doing 2 hour sets, supplying the PA, which I would expect to get paid for and an originals band probably doing 30 - 45 minutes as part of a multi band bill, PA supplied, which more than likely you're lucky to get petrol money for. I would imagine that even truly professional musicians that rely on playing for a living would be playing in some sort of functions band then maybe be in an originals band as well but wouldn't expect to make money at it, not when starting out anyway
17. met our drummer and guitarist through Party Sounds 10 years ago and we're still together, just!
18. not really my cup of tea, for the same reason rap isn't, I quite like a melody line in songs
19. well I would be looking for songs with just A D E in them so I wouldn't be worrying were to fret, or I'd have to put chalk marks on the neck
20.
I like a bit of slap bass if it fits in the song. Brothers Johnson-Stomp, for example.
trouble is I've never found a song with slap bass in it that I like, so, do I not like songs that slap bass fits with, or does slap bass put me off the song?
21.
Search for 'battery powered amps' on here and there's quite a few options - this one looks good in particular as you could amplify a whole band and it comes with a built in trolley as well as costing peanuts: http://www.amazon.co...ords=qtx+qr10pa
150watt from a battery, that can't be right, can it? BTW I use a Roland mobile cube for busking, acoustic guitar and vocals, I have tried bass through it and it does sound better than you'd expect considering it's only got 2 x 4" speakers but I wouldn't think it could compete volume wise with anything other than an unamplified acoustic guitar, although I did get told to turn down once by a community copper, one of the shops nearby had complained I was too loud
22. when the bass kicks in it gets me every time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfmZcD9IRgQ
23.
Interesting concept. I hate Coronation Street, but I can't say I've never gone out of my way to watch another episode just to remind myself how much I despise it. Perhaps I should?
perhaps despise was putting it a bit strongly, dislike might be nearer the mark (King )I used to quite enjoy Coro, well the comedy bits anyway, but stopped watching it when the then Mrs Warning decided she'd had enough of me, can't say I've missed it (or her)
24.
Given that the programme was specifically about slapping, did you seriously expect to enjoy it?
not really, but it remind me how much I despise it.
25. well I've just listened to it, God it's dreadful, 2 highspots, the quote from basschat about what should be slapped and about 10seconds of the Ramones, which probably explains why I thought the rest of it was dreadful, each to their own eh?
