I suppose that's because most of this thread has been about punk as a culture rather than an in depth discussion about the music. Just goes to show what a wide range of music came under the 'punk' umbrella though when both The Stranglers and Crass are mentioned in this thread.
yeah punk became a very broad church as far as musically styles were concerned, from the Buzzcocks, Undertones to Crass and beyond, I prefer the more melodic end of it myself, but all the styles are energetic and fairly simple to play, though not always at the speed of some of it, especially for drummers, as mentioned earlier

of course it all depends on what position the bass is in, I have mine low (avitar) so my thump is always hooked over, which is the most comfortable position for me and that's what bassists should do, position the thumb where it feels most natural
I have a set of Elixir stainless steels on delivery at present. I've never tried them myself but after reading some good reports on here made want to check the out. Not the cheapest though, so they better be good!
I used Elixirs for a while, they are good, last ages even when if the coating comes off if you play with a pick, gone onto DR neons now, cause they're more punk rock , which also last a very long time but feel like normal strings not super smooth like the Elixirs
-
I hook mine over to deaden the e string so it's damped for when I hit it by accident, except when I'm supposed to be playing it of course.

Would you be friends with the people in your band if...
PaulWarning replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
I've been in the same band for 8 years and found it difficult to stay close friends with band members after a while, due to disagreements, always remember an interview with Pete Townsend, after (what he thought) was the Who's last tour he said "it's the happiest I've ever been knowing I wouldn't have to see the rest of the band ever again" struck a chord with me -
DR Black Beautie Strings - never again....
PaulWarning replied to intime-nick's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've had 4 sets of DR neon pink and greens, no complaints, and they last for ages, had the last set on for 6 months and they still sounded just the same as the new set -
Interviewer: What is syncopation? Yogi: That's when the note that you should hear now happens either before or after you hear it. In Jazz, you don't hear notes when they happen because that would be some other type of music. Other types of music can be Jazz, but only if they're the same as something different from those other kinds.
never liked syncopated notes, especially on hi hats, I just don't think they sound right, can't stand improvised jazz, so I guess that explains it
AFAIK, the site software automatically resizes images to thumbnails. Only way round that is to host your piccies somewhere like Photobucket or Flickr & link them using [ IMG] [/ IMG] tags (without the spaces). Anyway… I was hoping to see 'Steel Adjustable Neck' on the neckplate as that's a dead giveaway for a Mat, but yours doesn't. However the neck construction & tuners are identical to my 1981 TSB-400, so I'd say it probably is a Matsumoku product. The serial number fits with it being an 81. I say 'probably' as I have heard that some early 80s Arias were built at other factories in Japan, (like Hoshino or Fujigen) but more than that I know not. Noelk27 is your man for this. Pete.
cheers pete
Might be. Shares a few common features with Vantage. What does it say on the neckplate? A good shot of the back of the neck would help too. Pete.
there you go, don't know how to get full size picy's on here
-
it's the law of diminishing returns, plus everybody likes to think they've got a bargain
-
I've got a battered Hondo 1981 is this a Matsumoku?

Starting a band from scratch. Long, sorry...
How the hell didn't they think of that?
because there's loads of people out there who are totally incapable of organising anything, every band needs someone who tries to anticipate problems before they happen, in other words a nurse maid, perhaps that ought to be in the OP's list as well -
somebody named their band the same as us, so our drummer sent them a like request for our FB page, needless to say they didn't click it, don't know whether they're still going or not
-
if you're completely f**ked without a pedal, you shouldn't be without a backup, sods law dictates if you haven't it'll go wrong, I use a zoom 506II all the time but I have a spare.
You guys need to play more bass!
Practice every 1 or 2 weeks, 2 or 3 two hour sets every month, I would have thought that was enough
You know... I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only one on here who LIKES rehearsing! The reason, I get to hang out with people I like and play music and have a laugh. Having done that we can go play some gigs too
used to like rehearsing, but that was when we were all mates, after a while all the sh*t that goes with being in a band sort of gets in the way of that, plus, unless you're doing new stuff it all becomes a bit pointless if you're gigging regularly anyway -
I use DR neon pink or green, the coating comes off where I thrash them with my pick but they never seem to die on me, the last 2 sets I've put on didn't sound any different new as the ones I'd taken off after 6 months

so you're after 4 blokes with roughly the same tastes and abilities with no other commitments and no full time jobs? -
because we're all narcissists?

PaulWarning replied to Telebass's topic in General Discussion
one of the most important things I've found is that you all like the same sort of music, if people aren't enjoying what they're playing they ain't going to hang around for long, and there's no mention of what standard you're looking for. I personally wouldn't dream of joining a band with what appears to be a total control freak in charge, sorry, but that's the way it comes across -
and the piece of equipment is less than 12 months old you don't need a cert at all.
so you can just say your gear is less than 12 months old then? It's just another pain in the arse, we share the storage and transportation of gear, the only time it's in one place is at a gig
-
my band have been told that we need one on several occasions but nobody has ever asked to see it.
-
has anybody been asked for this before they play a gig? we never have, in fact nobody's even bothered looking at the labels on the equipment
-
one band is enough for me, dealing with lack of commitment and ego's takes away a lot of the pleasure, do a bit of open micing that way I can please myself without letting anybody else down. edit, it came out a lot more bitter than it was supposed too
-
band finance and tax, exciting huh??!
PaulWarning replied to BassInMyFace's topic in General Discussion
wonder how many bands keep proper records? it's just a hobby for most of us, we have to deal with enough red tape in our normal jobs
