1. in my book a tribute is where they make an good effort to look like the original, if they just play the songs they're just a covers band, once saw a band billed as a stones 'tribute', made no effort to look like them and spent half the set doing other artisits sixties covers, glad I didn't pay to get in, what a con
2. probably get slagged off for saying this, but, I would rather go and see a good tribute playing in the local pub, free admission decent beer nice and dry, than pay £100 to stand in a wet cold field or a massive arena with crap sound , with about 50000 other people watching the original thing from about half a mile back. I agree with a couple of posts on here, the secret is not to take youself to serously, saw a stones tribute once and 'Brian Jones' came on wearing angels wings, brilliant
3. haven't got a clue, anybody know where it comes from? perhaps I'll start another thread asking
4. Just watched Green Day at Reading, it's on teletext, not a bad thing to do, play a short 'secret' gig on a smaller stage, did they only do half an hour? but I do wish Billy Jo would cut out that tiresome A O crap
5.
I have a plywood hondo P like this. it sounds luvverly, but weighs a ton. ply is fine.
+1 so have I
6.
But is that down to the band not being able to perform the ballad well or the audience’s natural preference for faster, more groove based songs that they can dance to or sing along to??
The later I would say, ballads do tend to show up dodgy singers though
7.
Dunno why a band that can nail a fast or even a mid-paced track shouldn't be able to pull off a slower song? The main problem seems to me to get an audience to listen and not rush en masseto the loo or bar...! Think you answered your own question there, if the audience rushes to the bar you've not pulled it off
8.
I had one for a while, only slight problem was the pre-amp valve became loose, so my mate had a look, put it back in place, and tightened the holder. Never a problem again. Great amps, very loud, and sound good with the matching MB410, awesome with the Marshall VBC412.
so why did you off load it?
9. has anybody heard any trouble with the heads,? there's one here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/181750-marshall-mb450h-price-drop-l160-delivered-fsft/page__fromsearch__1 just a thought with all the trouble seeming to come form the cab crossovers
10.
Most bands can't play a slow song which is the reason why they stay away from them. If you are going to pick one..make sure you do it well
+1 to that. and try and make it a singalong as well
11.
This has come a couple of times about the democracy of a band - if 4 out of 5 want to play it, what would you say?
Well I'm in a 4 piece and generally we reach a concensus, but if one person really doesn't want to do it we don't, there's enough other songs out there without causing resentment, having said that we've all got more a less the same musical taste which helps a lot, it's an old cliche 'musical differences' but it can cause a lot of aggro
12. don't do a song that that somebody in the band doesn't like, resentment builds up and it'll end in tears
13.
I don't get what you mean. How would a crossover stop it overheating?
no crossover to go wrong stops it overheating, I got the impression the the faulty crossover, or splitter?, was causing the amp to overload and therefore overheat, mine gets quiet warm but it's never cut out
14. I'ver got one of these, had trouble with the first one, Marshall replaced it, since then it's been fine, love the sound with a 1x15 extention cab, mind you my ext cab has no tweeter so no crossover to break down which seems to be the main problem here
15. nope, don't miss it at all, much prefer my MIA P, each to there own I guess
16. you cam spend a £1000 on ear plugs, but if you forget to put them in, like i did at the last gig they won't do any good at all Incidental I use ER20 and have found them to work very well, when I put them in that is
17. how about the worst guitar solo ever? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI403cCUSCM kicks in about 1.20
18. my girlfriend wonders up halfway through the sound check and will say "that don't sound right" (she's not very good with technical jargon) so we adjust something, eventually she say "that's better" and away we go, then the room fills up, if we're lucky, and the whole thing alters anyway. Sound engineers cost money.

20. can't believe nobody's mentioned Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower
21. this has been done a few times, here's one http://basschat.co.uk/topic/95282-declaring-your-hobby-to-the-taxman/page__st__40 best answer I read somewhere was from one guy who got his tax reduced because his expenses where more than what he earned from the band, after claiming against his other earnings for a couple of years the taxman told him it was a hobby and not to declare band earnings, something like that anyway it
22.
It's horribly common and I run into all over the place and not just with pub bands and not just at festivals (where there might be a partial excuse). I've paid good money to see bands where I've filled in the words from memory (Todd Rundgren, Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention, The Nice (reunion tour), Johnny Winter to name but a very few). Steve

Exactly - the amount of bands I see where I can hear the singer, but not understand a word they are singing is amazing. I`ve always thought that as soon as you can hear the words, the band sounds much more professional.
This can be a trap you can fall into quite easliy doing your own sound, because you know the words it's tempting to have the vocals a bit lower than they should be, at the end of the day the melody line (usually the vocal) is the main part of the song
23. We do it to the volume of the drums. All you need to do is be able to hear everyone in the band on stage and that will transmit outfront with the exception of the Vox..as monitors will be loud and clear. can't really agree with that I'm afraid, sometimes I think my bass is really loud and out front it's fine, sometimes the guitar seems loud but again it's ok out front, depends on room accustics
24. me the guitard and the singer, with his cordless mic, do it by concensous, if you can't hear the vocals turn your amps down and if the drummer is way to loud buy him some lighter sticks, noisey bastard
