1. I'm selling some speakers on ebay and a guy contacted me using the ebay email service and we agreed a price, he's coming round to pick up the item. Should I do a quick buy it now price and let him win the auction and pay the fees or just end the auction early? or any other suggestions
2. I've only ever bought CD versions of vinyl records I already own twice, the first 2 Undertones long players, just been comparing them like for like and I have to say the CD versions do sound a little crisper, but then again the vinyl version have been played hundreds probably thousands of times. Having said that it's still a lot more fun putting a record on the turntable than a CD in the draw. Anybody else done this comparison with newish vinyl?
3. I'm just reavaluating stuff since I got my hands on some different speakers and already I've come to the conclusion that mp3's played through the computer or personnel mp3 player sound dreadful (not surprisingly) but resonable bit rate mp3's burnt to a cd and played though a HI Fi sound ok, as regards vinyl v CD's I'm coming to the conclusion it's not the CD format that's the problem but the way modern stuff is mixed, everything's compressed to death to get more volume with the result that there's no space around the different instruments, having said that there is a magic with vinyl that digital music will never match, could be a age thing though
4.
Excellent choice , I hope you get many hours of listening pleasure. If I remember correctly ( and in this case I think I do) Mission recommended they were best suited to open frame stands ( but most decent single pillar stands will also do fine) and they were quite specific that the speakers be positioned with their rears exactly 20 centimeters from a rear wall to achieve optimum bass response , and preferably a foot and a half from a side wall . Mission speakers of this era were also unusual in so much as they were designed to be placed facing squarely into the room rather than angled ( or "toed in " , as it often referred to ) in towards the listening position as is usual with most speakers . Mission designed them to give the best stereo image that way , but you are , of course, free to experiment with any and all of these things. to suit your own taste
Yep, now I've been bitten by the Hi Fi bug again I'll be on the lookout for some stands now
5. got my hands on some Mission 760i's (at a bargain price too) and have to say they're marvellous, really clear and focused, which means I can hear what the bass is doing, went for them because they're the easiest to get hold of second hand. Thanks to everyone who offered advice, much apprieciated.
6. P basses have a mid scoop? depends where you think mid is, I would say anywhere between 300 and 1000 hz, a hell of a difference when you boost or cut any of these frequencies
7. that what I thought, with no science to back it up, I found something else out that's odd, they're biwired, if I take off one of the terminals on one speaker the bass unit stops working, if I take off the same wire(not exactley the same wire, if you know what I mean) on the other speaker the mid range and the bass speaker stops working, i.e just leaving the tweeter, spooky huh?
8. now I'm confused.
9.
It can; impedance and DC resistance are different things, impedance varies with frequency whilst DC resistance is, well, resistance at DC. I'd guess that the speakers are stamped with 6 ohms because that's their DC resistance, whilst 8 ohms would be their nominal impedance.
Right think I sort of understand that, but if 2 speakers have nominal inpedance of 8ohms how can 2 of them be 8 ohms? unless they're nominal impedance is 4 ohms, could nominal impedance be less than DC resistance?
10. just been messing about with my Celestion F30 audio speakers, both the mid range and bass drivers are marked 6 ohms, well they're identical actually, yet the specs say these speakers are 8 ohms, can this be right?
11. I use DR neon pink cause they're pink, oh, and they last along time as well, similiar to Elixir nanoweb but not quite as smooth, I might try neon green next time ot even mix them up that'd confuse everybody
12. missed out on the KEF's and Eltax's, so still looking, got to be local really the carriage can double the price by the looks of things
13.
Beware of "bargain" hifi speakers from the '80s and 90s with foam cone edge surrounds. They often look intact but will tear when cranked. I recently got some old JBL Control 1 pros with this issue. I did re foam them, but it was another £20 odd and a couple of hours work. Acoustic Research (AR) speakers are the same, I've refoamed 2 pairs now, with good results though. AR18s' are a nice sounding speaker for the money, above issue notwithstanding.
is this where the out bit of the cone sort of rots away? had this trouble with JPW AP2's, ditched them in the end. Got my eye on some Eltax Liberty 3+'s at the minute, anybody know anything?
14.
That was a decent small speaker from the mid to late 1980s. They were designed to be positioned close to a rear wall to reinforce their bass response, and so they are better suited to a smaller room. I've never heard them myself , but by reputation they were a good speaker of their day and well regarded at the time. If they are really cheap and in good condition they might be worth a try , but if you are in the market for a used compact speaker like that it's worth considering that the market for affordable high quality smaller speakers really took off in the early 1990s as manufacturers realised that this is where most of their potential sales were, and some models from a bit later than these Kef C20s will sound markedly better. Some speakers that retailed at around the £120 to £150 in the early to mid 1990s sounded amazing for their size and can be had for a steal nowadays if you keep an eye out for the right model. My own personal preference is for Mission speakers.. The first proper speakers I got was a pair of 760is ( just seen these on ebay http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4abdc717ac) :and they were fantastic with a detailed and exciting sound , and in most respects they sounded as good as my current speakers that cost ten times as much. In the 90s Mission were ,for the most part, really on top of their game and came out with several cracking smaller ( and larger) speaker designs. They will still sound good now, but the only caveat is that spares for some models might be a problem. If you can get some for a fair price they are well worth a try nevertheless. I still have fond memories of bringing home the first Rage Against The Machine album and listening to Tim Commerfords' Stingray punching out of the speakers in my humble student bedroom and I'm sure they would give you the defined bass that you currently are missing. I'm only banging on about Mission because they are what I'm most familiar with and so can recommend from experience , but plenty of other makers such as Kef and Tannoy also put out some great smaller speakers back in the 90s.
Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep and eye on them, the KEF's are local to me and no bids yet, at £10 they're worth a punt
15. just seen some second hand KEF C20, does anybody know anything about them?
16.
There are a myriad of smaller speakers to choose from, and if you're looking to buy secondhand then there is almost so much choice as to be overwhelming. One thing to consider is the compatability of any prospective speakers to your amp ; if you want to turn them up loud then you will need some speakers that are reasonably easy for your NAD amp to drive. Most bookshelf speakers should be fine, but if you can look at the spec for any particular speakers then ideally they would be 8 ohms impedance with a sensitivity over 87db, or 6 ohms ideally with a slightly sensitivity. As for brands and models, some of the smaller Mission speakers such as the 760i or 780 are old favourites of mine and are well worth a punt if you see them cheap, or else something like Tannoy 603s or Tannoy 605 are a solid used buy even though they are from 20 years ago. Some smaller floorstanders will still work in a small room , and if you see something like some Rega EL8s at a sensible price they have got nice meaty bass and you won't need stands.
cheers Dingus, I won't be turning it up too loud though, sets the tinitus off lol
17.
The F30's do indeed have quite bloomy bass. A port plug might help.
I've plugged the port and it has helped, still not much bass guitar there though (really frustrating for a bass player), I fear I might have the bug again, damn this thread
18. hey thanks guys, I too suspected the speakers, they are big for the room I have them in now, I'll try repostioning and a port plug, any sugestions for smaller speakers that will enable me to hear the bass nice and clearly? Like the OP here I'd like something 2nd hand, say up to £100
19. there seems to be some cracking advice floating around on this thread so if I can go off on a slight tangent, my present set up is a rega turntable, Arcam Alpha 1 CD player , NAD 3130 amp and Celestion F30 speakers, and I hardly listen to it because I'm fed up with hearing all bass drum and no bass guitar, any ideas anyone?
20. I use a capo to avoid those pesky B and Bb chords at the nut end of the neck, talking of the nut it can also get round the problem of a badly adjusted (filed) nut, and of course it's an easy way of moving a song to a higher key
21. most stuff reminds me of something else these days, it's an age thing
22.
I remember back in the day, NAD 3020..serious budget amp. Shame I blew mine accidentally. Got Cambridge audio now, highly recommend .)
I've got one of those, still going strong, not a crackle anywhere on the pots, that's a NAD btw
23.
Lack of studio compression.
yeah that was the point I was trying to make, clumsily, we're all struggling to get the right sound and JJ probably couldn't get it live
24. this has been done before several times, here's one http://basschat.co.uk/topic/107133-the-jj-burnel-sound-early-stranglers/page__hl__stranglers has anybody heard him getting THE sound live? always sounded too trebley to me compared to the 1st album
25. of course the big thing is 'it's how you play them'. I've heard covers bands doing most of the songs mentioned here, sometimes I enjoy them, sometimes not, I always think that a crowd can sense when a bands just going through the motions, In others words if the band isn't enjoying it how the hell can you expect the crowd to.
