1. perhaps you're wrong and the majority of bassists are right? I was always looking on the lookout for basses and buying a few but since I got my MIA P I don't even look anymore I'm a GAS free zone
2. Also i can't say for sure that this works as my amp would have blown it, you don't have to turn your amp up to 11
3. my band does this song, P bass with a pick with a bit of distortion from a Zoom 506II, but then I use that set up on all the songs the guitarist went to see the Hives and couldn't believe how bad the bass solo sounded, so distorted he couldn't make out any of the notes. So I say to anybody that's beating themselves up trying to get a certain sound, don't worry about it the band that recorded the song probably can't get it either
4. I've got a Hondo with a sticker like that on it, it says made in Japan, if it is it's worth the money
5. been GAS free since getting my MIA P bass and Marshall MB 4210 with extension cab, I don't even bother looking at other stuff now
6. ......but why diss the MIMP's?
cause they don't do cack handers
7. being left handed I stand to the right of the drummer, and yep I've got tinitus and hearing loss in my left ear, I'm in my late fifties and it didn't start until about 5 years ago, so, to all of you who say their hearing is ok dispite playing in loud bands, don't feel smug to soon
8.
do-able with enough practice
the magic words, trouble is in most bands there are always some people more committed than others
9. this question crops up a lot, then you find some quite difficult songs suggested, the implication being "well I find them easy so I must be an ace player", nobody's going to accuse me of that, anything off the first few Ramones albums
10. depends what sort of band you are, if it's mostly originals you be lucky to get anything, we charge £160 for 2 x 45 min sets in pubs doing mostly punky covers, but I think we're on the cheap side, but it all depends on the venue and the night the gig is, basically get what you can but be flexible if you want gigs
11. I've been using one of these for about 18 months, I did have fault problems to start with, Marshall sent me a new one, but since then it's been fine, I use it with a 1 x 15 extention cab, (not a Marshall) which gives it a lot more bottom end grunt, and I think I must be in a minority of one cause I use the modern channel but I do use a zoom 506II to add a touch of distortion, really happy with it, get the sound I want with loads of head room
12.
sennheiser hd280 are pretty good considering the price imo round about the £85 mark i believe
+1 to them, I use them for practice as well
13.
The bigger MB combos have the something something head two channel pre-amp witha tube in the vinatage channel don't they? Seems worth a look!
Yeah there's 1 preamp valve in the vintage channel which gives a valve sort of sound and a control for mixing the 2 channels together, far too much chioce for me I'm afraid I just use the modern channel
14. and because they get them free they can change strings for every gig just like JJ Burnel does allegedly
15. I've got a MB 4210 and I'm really pleased with it, powerful and LOUD especially with a 15" extension cab, but build quality is an issue, the first one I had got exchanged by Marshall because of faults and the replacement had a broken spade connector on one of the speakers which I fixed myself, since then had no trouble at all.
16. Yeah, I'll be checking them out on spotify
17.
No Cappy didn't play that. He did the middle bit of Antipope though.
I'm happy to stand corrected. On the subject of the Nomeansno stuff that's been posted on here, there's a little part of me that thinks "why doesn't he just get a guitar", anybody else? or is it just me.
18.
And maybe a metal pick as per Algy Ward? My 2nd fav P bass tone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPoYQHDi1HI
Great bass intro, but I think I read somewhere that the Capt played it, it certainly sounded nothing like that live, back in the day
19.
How would I EQ the amp to get the sound found here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr2bfrPgXoY Thanks Jamie
I suspect JJ's put a lot of time , effort and money into trying to replicate the early Stranglers sound, and he's still not quite nailed it. Most punk bands play with distorted guitar so JJ's sound would get buried me thinks, although I love the early Stranglers stuff it's not really punk. As has been said before a pick/P bass and a bit of distortion with eqing decided whether you want a Simonon or Mike Dirnt sound, they are quite different
20. in an interview with the producer of the first 3? albums, Martin Rushent, he stated he got the sound by micing up the cab with the amp mid and treble turned right up and then DI'd it to give it some bottom end, of course, the green P was still needed to nail 'that' sound methinks
21.
I posted this yesterday on another thread, its from the era of "that sound" Obviously there is the mime issue, but is this a bass he was getting that sound from too? Anyone know the story here, of have I got something wrong? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6yTRq_rJg4...feature=related
They're miming alright, and no that's not the famous bass that one was green
22.
this questions been asked loads of times, once read an interview with JJ and he said he'd tried hundreds of P's over the years and never found one that sounded like the old Green one that broke in half, I've said it before but IMO you can't nail that sound because it was a fluke, if you could JJ would still sound like he did on the the first 3 Stranglers albums and he doesn't, IMO of course

Yeah but that is my point , JJ can't get the exact sound now because he insists on using British made gear only and will not try other. My thoughts are that maybe with different gear that sound could be acheived hence asking about Ampeg or maybe some other ? A modern Hiwatt perhaps ? Any ideas ?
I think if it were possible to replicate JJ's early sound somebody would have done it by now, and as far as I know nobody has, if somebody knows different I'd love to hear it

24. I've had about 6 sets of Elixir strings and although they last a long time the coating does start to come off fairly quickly where I batter them with my pick, but not this last set, they've been on about 3 months now and there's still no sign of them going all furry on me, anybody else notice this, have they improved them?
