2.
Wait a sec. Flux i hear you say. What is this substance?

It's a chemical that allows the solder to flow smoothly over a surface. It's not generally used these days for the sort of work you're doing as you'll being using rosin cored solder.
It cleans the wire or whatever you're soldering I believe, all I can say is I use the rosin cored solder and it's a lot easier to get the solder to take with a bit of flux on there, maybe it's just me doing something else wrong, wouldn't be without it myself Bakers fluid does the same job http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?h...ved=0CCwQ8wIwAQ
 3. has anybody mentioned flux? dip the wire's in it before you tin them helps no end
 4.
Does anyone else find them really tense compared to other strings?
No, can't say I've noticed that
 5.
Hmm, sounds like a normal Precision to me. That's a studio sound so I'd spend some time tweaking the tone of my amp and my effects (compression for a start) rather than trying to find a bass that produces just that sound flat, into any old amp. If you've got a Precision and a plectrum, you're nearly there.
Afraid I've got to disagree with you Henry, I've spent hours messing about with the EQ, you think your're close then listen too Hanging Arpund or Peaches and realise you're not, the fact that JJ's played hundreds of P's in his quest to replace his broken green one says it all.
 6.
Yes that green one is a 60s Fender - perhaps a 64 or 67. It is the one used on the 1st 3 Stranglers albums which is largely the tone people think of when talking about JJB. This bass just sounded unique (and yes, the torn speakers as well). Rosewood neck too. Apparently the green spray job is quite rough when you see it up close. He broke it but when glued back together it just never sounded the same.
I heard this story as well, which proves the wood does have a big effect on the way a bass sounds, I guess.
 7.
I've been using them for about 3 years now, well worth the money they last ages. One thing, the last set I used were on for about 5 months and never shed their 'skin' unlike the others that I'd used, now the new set have started flaking anybody else had this? some sets flake and some don't? very strange

I use Elixirs on all my basses. Wal fretless, Fender, Laklands, and spectors. I wouldn't use anything else. I don't agree with the lack of character comments! Don't use a pick, be extra careful threading them through the bridge/body so as not to damage the coatings and they will last for ages, well worth the extra investment and so much smoother/easier to play than uncoated strings. The only challenge I have had is getting the extra long scale ones at a good price as these are needed for the laklands. I now buy all my strings from Bass Merchant, as definitely the cheapest and best service... I'm happy to be an endorsee if you're reading this Elixir!!
Never thought of that, perhaps on the set that didn't shed it's coating I didn't damage the coating when fitting them, I'll be extra careful next time. Incidental I do use a pick all the time, so I don't think it's that that causes the coating to shed.

 9. like the upfront bass, unfortunatley the rest of my band would soon veto a mix like that
 10.
When i was looking at Fender Basses in Dawsons recently I asked one of the lads what was the difference between the MIM and MIA basses and he said "A few Miles". He said that the American ones tended to be setup better from the start but you can setup a MIM to play just as well.
I once had a MIM Jazz, the pick ups were awful
 11. perhaps you're wrong and the majority of bassists are right? I was always looking on the lookout for basses and buying a few but since I got my MIA P I don't even look anymore I'm a GAS free zone
 12. Also i can't say for sure that this works as my amp would have blown it, you don't have to turn your amp up to 11
 13. my band does this song, P bass with a pick with a bit of distortion from a Zoom 506II, but then I use that set up on all the songs the guitarist went to see the Hives and couldn't believe how bad the bass solo sounded, so distorted he couldn't make out any of the notes. So I say to anybody that's beating themselves up trying to get a certain sound, don't worry about it the band that recorded the song probably can't get it either
 14. I've got a Hondo with a sticker like that on it, it says made in Japan, if it is it's worth the money
 15. been GAS free since getting my MIA P bass and Marshall MB 4210 with extension cab, I don't even bother looking at other stuff now
 16. ......but why diss the MIMP's?
cause they don't do cack handers
 17. being left handed I stand to the right of the drummer, and yep I've got tinitus and hearing loss in my left ear, I'm in my late fifties and it didn't start until about 5 years ago, so, to all of you who say their hearing is ok dispite playing in loud bands, don't feel smug to soon
 18.
do-able with enough practice
the magic words, trouble is in most bands there are always some people more committed than others
 19. this question crops up a lot, then you find some quite difficult songs suggested, the implication being "well I find them easy so I must be an ace player", nobody's going to accuse me of that, anything off the first few Ramones albums
 20. depends what sort of band you are, if it's mostly originals you be lucky to get anything, we charge £160 for 2 x 45 min sets in pubs doing mostly punky covers, but I think we're on the cheap side, but it all depends on the venue and the night the gig is, basically get what you can but be flexible if you want gigs
 21. I've been using one of these for about 18 months, I did have fault problems to start with, Marshall sent me a new one, but since then it's been fine, I use it with a 1 x 15 extention cab, (not a Marshall) which gives it a lot more bottom end grunt, and I think I must be in a minority of one cause I use the modern channel but I do use a zoom 506II to add a touch of distortion, really happy with it, get the sound I want with loads of head room
 22.
sennheiser hd280 are pretty good considering the price imo round about the £85 mark i believe
+1 to them, I use them for practice as well
 23.
The bigger MB combos have the something something head two channel pre-amp witha tube in the vinatage channel don't they? Seems worth a look!
Yeah there's 1 preamp valve in the vintage channel which gives a valve sort of sound and a control for mixing the 2 channels together, far too much chioce for me I'm afraid I just use the modern channel
 24. and because they get them free they can change strings for every gig just like JJ Burnel does allegedly
