Is that true?
I wouldn't have said so, I use mine with the tone control full on, with Elixir strings and play with a pick so it certainly isn't dull, If you roll all the treble out and play with your fingers there will certainly be loads of bottom end there but I don't think I would call it dull
 2.
I think we are just getting our wires crossed TBH? We are reading your original post as "any cheap bass wont cut through as well as any expensive bass" which is not true hence someone elses uncalled for "Idiot" comment . Where it sounds like what you mean is "a cheaper version/copy does not cut through as well as a more expensive version" which is nearer the truth but still not really gospel as I said before my cheaper albeit £1250 Ray cuts through better than my £censored pre EB Ray, Also I have a modded active jazz that owes me about £400 that can mix it with the best of them trust me its awesome. So I kind of know what your saying but still disagree
I'll settle for that, I can only bass my opinion on the basses I've used, if someone else has used more or different basses to me and comes to a different conclusion fair enough
 3. P for me, I play in a 3 piece band and I find the P just fills the sound out better, I've got relatively big hands so the wide neck issue doesn't bother me.
 4. more or less, certainly the same band, can't remember what came first the MIA P or my Marshall MB, at the risk of being called an idiot again I'll try a qualify my remarks by saying in my experience with the basses I've owned, the Ray and the P both had a more solid bottom end than the cheaper copies. Maybe there are crappy expensive basses, but I've been lucky enough to avoid them
 5. I've got a MB4210 and I've had reliabilty issues, first one had to go back to marshall and they sent a replacement and that one had a broken spade connector on one of the speakers which I soldered on, since then no trouble at all done about 30 gigs with it, great amp
 6.
Just adding volume is not what most people class as cutting through the mix though so I still disagree really. A sadowsky Jazz bass on the front pup wont cut through like a cheap jazz on its back pup if you keep everything else the same will it? It might be a more pleasing sound but if you are talking purley on cutting through then the cost of the bass is irrelevent.
I've no experience with sadowsky basses but I've owned a few P copies over the years including a Squire and I've had a MIM Fender Jazz, but none of these cut through/sat in the mix nearly as well as my old Stingray and my current MIA P, so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
 7.
Not put the best but I know what he is saying .cheap and if it cuts through dont really go hand in hand. A cheap P bass will cut through anything with a good amp better than a Pukka T bird for instance unless you are familiar with them and know how to get that cool sound to come through you will fiddle all night.A cheap P or J copy at a jam night within 2 mins you will get a useable sound even if its not your normal sound or even one you like but as far as cutting through defo!
Well I suppose you'll hear any bass if it's loud enough compared to everything else, a good amp will only achieve so much, its the computer saying, rubbish in rubbish out, If I were to say a quality bass sits better in the mix it might be better understood what I'm getting at.
 8.
sorry nothing to add, cept i enjoyed the Purple Helmets also, no nonsense covers with JJ on bass I got nice n sleazy in the set of 2 bands i played with last year, but both dropped it after a few gigs, seems not as well known as I thought it was Was fun to play a few times though
perhaps it would have been more popular if you'd used the strippers on stage like the Stranglers did On the subject of the early bass sound I also read an interview somewhere with JJ where he said he could never get the same sound once he'd broken the green P in half while punching it during a gig. Perhaps he did get it repaired but it also repaired the fault thet gave it it's distintive sound?
 9.
What's the warning for? You being an idiot?
cheers for that, my guess is most bassists on here will know who the idiot is with a comment like that
 10. similar thing happened to me, except it was after we'd done our slot, I was asked if the main band could borrow my amp, sorry I said I've got to go, the main band just had to go through the PA. So if you decide you don't want to do it just say your cat's ill or something and you've got to go, If anybody lends out gear it should be the last band
 11. all these posts just go to show what a broad church punk has become, but for me, old enough to have been there when punk broke, it's the Ramones that do it for me, fast melodic songs stripped down to the bare essentials, after all they were the first true punk band, weren't they?.
 12.
Inspired by Bilbo, I have nothing but respect for mans love for his music. So i thought i would share my love Punk, i love the urgency i love the speed i love the way i feel when i hear a bass line played in hyper-speed with a nice palm muted guitar over the top and most of all i love the "this is what i play if you don't like it f*ck off " attitude of it all.
that type of thing is exactly why punk was invented, god is there anything more boring than a bass or drum solo
 13.
Without wanting to be the devil on yr shoulder, as opposed to the angel, do it - you know you want to. Think the humble P Bass has always been popular, but that many people after having tried this bass, these features, that manufacturer etc, come to the realisation that what is special about the P Bass is in fact it`s simplicity, and the way that it just sits in the mix so well. Many other basses sound far better on their own, but in a band context the P Bass just works so well.
+1
 14.
Plenty of Rays in punk!
not the old school variety, the ray's just sounds too polite, the P fills the sound out better especailly when there's only one guitarist, to my ears anyway, each to their own as they say.
 15. sorry lads, sold my Ray and bought a P never looked back, mind you I do play in a Punk band
 16. I've got elixirs on my P, about a year old, fraying and discoloured but still don't sound dull
 17.
Stop listening to Level 42.
+1
 18. remember reading a story once of how George Formby was such a crap Ukulele player he had a stash of them all tuned differently so he could use the same fingering on every song, makes you think eh?
 19.
It doesn't really matter since you can never hear the bass player anyway. Just get a cheap one. Unless you want a special-sounding bass for doing YouTube play-a-long videos.
If you buy a cheap bass no one will hear you cause they don't cut through in a band situation
 20. but the occasional good one makes up for all the bad ones, doesn't it?
 21. once read a interview with J J and he said he'd tried hundreds of P's and never got the sound he got with the green one he broke in half, and I don't think he ever has got the sound he got on the first 3 Stranglers albums, so it was a fluke IMO the green P had a flaw in it that made it sound like that and that's probably the reason it broke in half!
 22. also try www.we7.com same thing but no need to download any software
 23.
The formula is (impedance of cab 1 X impedance of cab 2) / (impedance of cab 1 + impedance of cab 2). So, 2.667 ohms (roughly). With cabs that are the same impedance, you'd use the following: impedance of single cab / number of cabs = total impedance So, for instance if you had 3 x 16 ohm cabs (why on earth you would is another matter) you'd get 5.3 ohms (roughly).
Thanks
 24. sorry to hi jack the thread but it is relevent, if using 2 x 4 ohm cabs gives you a 2 ohm load, what would 1 x 4 ohm cab and 1 x 8 ohm cab give you?
 25.
And if you ever play with a plectrum, the coating gets worn and frayed pretty quickly.
It does, but it doesn't seem to effect the sound, all the gunge that the coating keeps out comes from the fingers not the pick
