Lemmy to the sound man "Can you hear that horrible noise from my monitor?" "No" said the sound man, Lemmy "Neither can I, turn the fcuker up" -
Singers who don't understand how music works
PaulWarning replied to Nail Soup's topic in General Discussion
I used to be as flat as a fart when singing, but with practice, singing to myself with headphones on and recording the result I've got to a level where, although not brilliant is acceptable, confidence is a factor, if you think you're a crap singer you will be, if you can tell when a singer is out of tune (or an instrument) you're not tone deaf -

maybe I'm being incredible thick but I always thought that power chords were partial barre chords, like Johnny Ramone Steve Jones, Billy Joe Armstrong etc -
Going to gigs. What do you love or hate about it?
PaulWarning replied to ubit's topic in General Discussion
they do it so that can boast to their 'friends' on Facebook and the like, what a great time they've had, thinking they're interested, well they're not, like other peoples holiday snaps, boring, they'd have a lot better time if they just watched the gig -

I think there's an interview with Johnny Ramone somewhere where he says 20 minutes is enough for unknown originals bands, do your best songs then get off before the audience gets bored, I do agree with him -

I prefer standing at gigs, but I'm quite tall, 6 feet, but my partner is only a bout 5 5 someone tall always stands in front of her, although she prefers standing it puts her off, tbh I don't enjoy big gigs these days, Rock City is about as big as I want it to be (we've found a spot where there's a step to stand on), big festivals like Glastonbury and Stadium gigs hold no interest to me whatsoever I enjoy seeing a covers band in the local pub as much as anything -
Cover Versions You Knew Long Before the Original

quite a few Bob Dylan songs, All along the Watchtower, If You Gotta Go Now, Mighty Quin, Mr Tambourine Man, probably be some more, Oh yes, the covers are always better than Bob's originals π -

once saw an obviously competent bass player, he was part of the band on a cruise ship, he played slap all over the verse of Alright Now, I'm still traumatised, so yes, taste is very important and can't be taught or learnt
-
not for better players than me but, luminous tape stuck to the neck where the spots go so you can see them at dark gigs
-
yes, see what you mean with Surrender, one of my justifications for nicking idea's when writing a song is they probably stole from someone else π

tenuous link I'd say, now Duchess and the Manics Tolerate is another story altogether.

You must surely like at least ONE song of theirs

The Ramones do seem like that, but it's all about the melody line and Joey's voice with them, IMO they do pull off the very hard trick of making something very simple, special, it's indefinable, if it was definable everyone would be able to do it -
I take a spare bass and an amp (if we're the only band on) to gigs, not practice, in the back of my mind we could use it as a PA amp in an emergency, once the guitarists amp packed up (or so he thought, in the end it was just power light bulb that had blown π), he had to use my spare, not ideal but got him through the gig. We were on a multi band gig once, 30 minute sets, the bass player in one of the other bands broke a string, refused the offer of another bass, spent 5 or 6 minutes replacing it, completely ruined the momentum of the set

the first mistake does sound really odd, the second one sounds good, which is probably what they thought

Some VERY good news at last - live music back by the Spring?

we had our first full pub set gig last Sunday for 15 months, with a newish guitarist after a couple of crash rehearsals, bit ropey, but as Basil would say "I think we got away with it" -
Compressors? I'll get my tin hat out π

I think Sue Ryder basses were just a one off block purchase, when they're gone they're gone, I would think by now every owner has removed the decal π, they were bought because they were a perceived bargain, but it's only a bargain if you really need it, would be interesting to see if anybody still uses one though,

you obviously aren't loud enough, at one gig my amp packed up, believe me it was very noticeable and everybody seems to notice when I play a bum note π
