  1. isn't the answer to put the cost of accomodation on top of your fee and arrange it yourself?
  2. don't have a problem with people being unavailable, our drummer likes a weekend off every month but as long as they're in the band calendar with plenty of warning it's not a problem, I try and book holidays when other band members are off but there's one week in they year where I have no choice, but it's on the calendar 9 months in advance. But it all boils down to how much people want to gig I suppose. edit, and pressure from wives and partners

  4. I'm afraid in spite of what we'd like to think there's just as many unethical people amongst bass players as there is in any walk of life, that's not to say there's a lot, but you don't need many to give everybody a bad name, same with not clearing up dog stinky poo and leaving litter lying around
  5. Finally, proof that Trace Elliot amps really do go louder
  6. just got an email from them introducing a guitarist that looked promising (we're looking for one) well what a performance, well done to anybody that gets through their registration process. I suspect they just want you to pay and not use the free service
  7. Fender recommend 2.4mm for the E string down to 2mm for the G string. I use a metal ruler and magnifying glass to measure string height, putting the ruler behind the string you're measuring helps a lot
  8. well fender recommend 2.4mm so a bit low, but it depends on your style and how much fret buzz you're prepared to put up with
  9. Well I don't think so, neck relief is in the middle of the neck so if you're fretting from, say, the 12th fret that'll be after the neck relief, hope that makes sense
  10. the way to set neck relief is to lower the strings until fret buzz starts then adjust neck relief and string height until slight buzz is the same all the way along the neck, then raise the strings to suit
  11. I'm not sure neck relief effects the higher frets it's down to saddle adjustment, so it's a trade off between fret buzz, string height and how hard you hit/pluck the strings, I've found the Fenders string height recommendations for a P bass aren't far off the mark
  12. this is an area where the friendly local guitar shop will be sorely missed, any newbie reading this thread would be thoroughly confused by now. What are set ups like on cheap mail order basses? I got a new Vintage off ebay, excellent bass after a set up, was unplayable when it arrived, a newbie wouldn't have a clue about setting up a bass or even if it needed it
  13. sounds dodgy to me, I'd avoid it, not worth the risk
  14. copied from @leschirons post in 'Quotes to Live by' thread heard, two nights ago, one of the greatest musical statements ever. Chatting to a Brit EUB player after his gig, I told him that I'd just started learning (he'd been playing jazz standards at the gig) and that I needed to put in a lot of work to get his level. His reply. "It's not as hard as it looks. If I have a chart with the chord changes, I usually play the root of those chords in the right place and hit any old bo ll ocks in between" I'm thinking that I could probably apply this method to every situation in life😆
  15. chatting to a fellow bass player, he uses Ashdown rather than the Trace Elliot I do, because Ashdown sounded 'cleaner' whereas I prefer the 'dirtier' sound of Trace, it's a difficult thing to put into words without using the word 'heft' 😊
  16. what no Ramones songs in there , seriously, All Along the Watchtower is one of my favourite songs, but not because of the solo but because of the overall guitar playing, don't listen to planet rock and looking at this list I'm not inclined too
  17. so, when it gets hot the volume could go down? I did think this might be happening, thought it was a fault. My SMX is the fanless model, just the heat sink
  18. I had the mosfets replaced in my AH250 a couple of years ago, could this explain why it's so loud?
  19. very rarely are tabs 100% correct or where your personal preferences is for fingering is, I like to play near the nut, for instance B is nearly always shown at the 7th fret on the E string whereas I prefer the 2nd fret on the A, but as a guide tabs are valuable tools, unless they're totally wrong.
  20. maybe Trace just sound louder because they're full of heft 🙄
  21. That thought has accord to me as well, that's why in my unscientific test I had everything turned up to full
  22. yes they appear to be very conservatively rated, I believe you can tell an amps output from how much current it draws, maybe someone with more knowledge than me can work out whether they really are a higher wattage than advertised
  23. you've probably seen this before, but I'll post it anyway, always makes me smile
  24. I was under the impression that the AH200 was actually 150 watts at 8 ohm, but I could be wrong. When I did my totally unscientific test I used my 2 Fender Rumble V2 cabs so all amps were under a 4 ohm load with the gains and volume controls on full and EQ's flat apart from the very bottom end end taken off I could record them all using a mic in the room but tbh I fear for the health of my Rumble cabs with the Trace SMX AH250 at full volume. Edit, the Ashdown amp is a AMB EVO III 500, not an MB
  25. I have 2 Trace amps, a series 6 GP12 AH200 and a GP12SMX AH250, I recently bought a Ashdown EVO III 500, just to compare it and have a newer amp (and it was cheap). Turned them all up to full, the AH200 is slightly louder than the Ashdown and the AH250 very noticeably louder. So I guess it is true, there's watts and then there's Trace watts
