Cover Versions - Like the original or not
PaulWarning replied to Nicko's topic in General Discussion
the band I'm in does Punk (I may have mentioned that before ), so if it's a punk song we're doing we try and get close to the original, but if it's not we try to put our own slant on it, even if it's just playing it faster😊 One thing I never get is tribute bands that try and sell their recordings of the band they are a tribute of, why would you do that and why would anybody buy it? -
strengths, reliable, decent gear and will turn up at rehearsals having learnt the new song, write most of the songs (on the last album anyway) and have decent backing vocals, and try and make sure things don't go wrong, before they go wrong Weaknesses, make the most mistakes of anyone in the band, fight my corner a little too hard on occasions, and, as far as the rest of the band are concerned, can't see how socialism could possibly work

just listened to Booze and Glory and I can see why you'd like them, well worth a listen, the lyrics lack a bit of finesse for me, I have the same trouble with Dirt Box Disco, but like you say it's all very familiar, but that's what happens when you get a bit older even if you like some newly recorded music it's not that new. I like the other track on here Isaac Gracie, but it does remind me of the Vaccines -

I very rarely check out new music these days, I always said I'd never get like the old fogey's who were always saying "the music's not as good as in my day" but here I am, sort of, I do occasionally stumble across a new song I like but you know what? it always reminds me of an old song I like, so I just think I've got about 5000 tracks on my music player, that's enough for me. I know I could be missing out on something I really like but I just can't be bothered to wade through all the stuff I don't anymore -
If he's selling them they're not pointless to someone and presumable he is, it does seem to be a speciality of his.

What do you value about your local music shop?
PaulWarning replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
I would imagine most music shops have some sort of internet presence, if they haven't they deserve to go bust, at one time if you wanted something locally you went to yellow pages, now you google it. It's not a question of good guys and bad guys it's evolution, just like the Supermarkets have killed off the corner shop, especially since they moved into the convenience sector -
I too think he gets a hard time on here, there's an air of pomposity about, alright his''modifications' might not be to everyone's taste, but his descriptions seem totally honest so he's not trying hide anything and surely if he's selling rubbish he'd have some negative feedback by now. Alright some of his customers might be disappointed but if the item is as described that's their fault not his

I think most people can do their own basic set ups after a while, there's plenty of good tutorials on youtube, so we're back to catering for the newbies. The more I think about it the more I realise the High St and outlets like small music shops are stuffed by the internet and out of town retail parks. -
He's still got 100% feedback 😊

PaulWarning replied to SamPlaysBass's topic in General Discussion
yep, I'm a P man (and play in a Punk band) as well, put off getting one for a few years because being a lefty I had to splash out on a USA one, no second hand ones seem to crop up when I was was looking , tried Stingray's and Jazz's first but the P just sits in the mix so much better. I have to slightly different point but, this is why trying out equipment in shops is a waste of time, until you've lived with it and played it in a band (assuming that's what you do) you'll never know whether a piece of equipment is right for your needs. -

going wireless, finally got a line 6 G10, after our guitarist bought one, a really well thought out piece of kit -
I suppose if there's a crossover it could stop the higher frequencies going to the other speakers, just disconnect it before the crossover if there is one, doubt you could tell either way though, personally unless you're slapping I've never seen the point of a tweeter in a bass cab, I have mine switched off, not that I can tell if they're on or off

PaulWarning replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
depends on the rateable value apparently You will not pay business rates on a property with a rateable value of £12,000 or less. For properties with a rateable value of £12,001 to £15,000, the rate of relief will go down gradually from 100% to 0%. If your rateable value is £13,500, you'll get50% off your bill. -

depending on the size a lot of small shops have zero business rates to pay (don't know how much location has to do with it), I know my old newsagents shop falls into that category -
Cheers, we've decided on something similar, the Shure WH20 XLR so we don't have to mess about using a different plug and phantom power, there doesn't seem many about that are not designed for use with some sort of power pack
-
anybody any experience of this one https://www.thomann.de/gb/shure_pga31.htm#bewertung

Our drummer does backing vocals, trouble is he keeps moving his head while playing so a headset mic would seem to be the answer, don't want to pay a lot and doesn't have to be wireless, any suggestions anybody?

Cover versions of songs with discomforting lyrics

if it was released today it would probably be banned, I'm always surprised that it's still played on the radio, -

ah yes, I remember that description of a certain brown colour, there was an Agatha Christie book called "10 little n*****s" later retitled "and then there were none", and the less said about Guy Gibson's dog the better, although the last time I saw the Dambusters it hadn't been edited out as it had been previousley. Funny old world -

perhaps I ought clarify, we, quite rightly, don't use the N word because it upsets a lot of people and has racist connections , but to the older generation the C word is just as upsetting (my 92 year old mum for a start) yet it's regularly used in public and social media, personally I'm not bothered by it unless I'm in company who are upset by it. Yet in the 70's there were comedy shows that used the N word -
the story goes, which you've probably heard, when JJ broke the the green one thumping it to get feedback he had it repaired but it was never the same, he tried hundreds of P's and never found one that sounded like the one one he broke, don't know if it's true, good story though. I do know the last time I saw them live, Peaches just didn't sound right at all. Wait a minute, you said had, you mean you let it go?

not heard J J Burnel's green Precision then?

well they have too, they make a product that doesn't wear out, so the only way they can keep selling it is to try and convince bass players to buy another one by tweaking it
