  1. seeing as my last post was way off topic, sorry , this subject, should I play for free, has been done to death it's entirely up to the individual band, my own view is if you're struggling for gigs and it's local, do it. Some won't agree which is fair enough
  2. trouble is Pubs that do not put music on regularly book bands thinking the bands will publicise it and bring their own supporters along to the gig, also pub managers can be lazy and incompetent. There's a pub near me that puts bands on every Friday night, they can't even be bothered to advertise it on their facebook page, last Friday there was about 10 punters in the pub edit, no doubt soon they'll stop having bands on because the don't draw enough people
  3. as with full bands, some acoustic acts are good some not so, we've tried a couple of 'stripped down' shows, drummer with cajon, acoustic guitar, me on turned down bass (can't really see the point of acoustic bass if you're going through an amp), we didn't enjoy them and won't be doing any more. I do open mics and a very occasional gig (usually charity, so no money) with me on acoustic guitar and vocals and my partner on snare, hi hat and crash, they work better or maybe expectations are lower lol. I do think acoustic guitars and bass sort of cancel each other out because acoustic guitars are bassy anyway
  4. plenty off low mids bit of presence (around the 3k Hz ) but no boom, my job being in a band with one guitarist is to fill out the sound, not really interested in the really low stuff, I leave that to the bass drum
  5. no worse than copying your CD's to cassette tape, or copying off the radio,
  6. wondered where our guitarist got the idea from to glare at me when he makes a mistake so everybody thinks it's my fault
  7. which of course, is the appeal of vinyl and perhaps why CD's are going to be consigned to history
  8. when trying to sell my bands latest CD I was shocked by how many people said "We haven't got a CD player", whether they'll make a comeback, like vinyl, has only time will tell, but it is bad news for artists trying, at least, to recoup the cost of recording an album, having said that I don't play or buy CD's o any more, I listen to them on spotify, so I can't really complain, can I?
  9. Verbal Warning doing our 'wall' photo, about 13 years ago, I look a lot lot younger (blue denim jacket)
  10. I don't think you'll find anybody arguing with you on that one, but which is worse Grandad or Grandma by St Winifred's School Choir?
  11. I agree unless you buying them for the colour there are better value coated strings about, In my experience the initial tone goes with all strings after a couple of hours playing, but I still find the Neon tone to my liking even after 6 months
  12. the world is full of songs that are amazingly popular for no apparent reason (to some people), Stairway to Heaven anybody?
  13. can't say I've noticed any stickiness, but I do play with a pick, must admit my only reason for using them is the neon colours, that doesn't mean I don't like them, but they are expensive
  14. you could finish up sounding this though
  15. same with From the Jam, they got their Paul Weller from a tribute, and very good he is too
  16. if memory serves me right Dee Dee Ramone played in a Ramones tribute for a while, bizzare
  17. of course this all very sensible, but if we all agreed to differ on opinion they'd be very few threads left to comment on
  18. I've got an SMX GP12 and don't use the 'sound management system' much, the valve preamp seems to do absolutely nothing, the preshapes are hopeless for gigging with a band, and the compression doesn't seem to do a lot either (mind you, I do play with a pick and use a bass drive pedal which compresses anyway). Great amps though aren't they? Like I say I do use a bass drive pedal (Zoom B1on) but I have the 30 and 40 Hz sliders right down and the 50Hz one is cut but depends on the room and a little boost at 2.6K depending on the state of my strings and the room
  19. that's why it's best left to the bass drum
  20. yep and me on my Precision, proving the point (I think) that cutting is better than boosting, cut the frequencies you don't want and the ones you do become more prominent
  21. Well I may be the only one of here by the looks of things, but I enjoy playing Wonderwall on my acoustic at open mics. Simplistic, familiar anthems, now I know why Oasis were so popular
  22. low D? I don't even like playing low F
  23. I don't bother about a tone at home, I just plug my bass into my laptop and use headphones because home practice bears no relation to what I need in a band situation, what @skankdelvar says, cut below 100hz, just muddy's the tone, and don't cut the mids, it might sound a bit 'honky' on it's own but live that's what cuts through. I always find it's better to cut rather than boost if you can
  24. Don't think you should bill yourself as a tribute then, just a Tom Petty covers band, nothing wrong with that it's just that I feel disappointed if a tribute doesn't look the part
