1. I bought a natural finish left handed Columbus P off ebay last year, 2 pieces of proper wood (Alder maybe?), baseball bat maple neck wasn't half bad, not quite up to my MIA P though, so I moved it on, nothing wrong with it.
2.
I would say that 20 cent is quite a lot! (assuming we're talking about the same tuning inaccuracy). I think that would clash noticeably with guitars. I think up to 2-4 cent one could live with (providing it's gradual and neighbouring notes are offset by similar amounts), but if we are talking 20 then that would be an issue in my book.
not sure what I can do about it, the G string is cock on, so I don't think it's a neck issue, the other stuff, string height relief are set by the book
3. I'll set my pedal up with the same setting on two patches but one with a compressor for this weekends gig and see if can tell the difference in a band situation, but I do use a touch of overdrive which sort of compressors the signal anyway.
4.
(how sharp are we talking by the way?),
that's the rub, electronic tuners are incredibly accurate, certainly doesn't sound sharp, that's why I'm not too hung up about it, as you say it can change depending how I fret, it's something like 20% of a semi tone, I'm probably being too pedantic about it, just interested in other peoples experiences I suppose
5.
First stop: nut height ?
don't think so, if I fret at the 2nd there's no gap on the first, if that makes sense
6. when you think how many bands there are and how many make it it's not surprising most of them are never heard of again
7. our singer gets most of the gigs he seems to enjoy that side of it, I chip in with one or two the Gutarist and the Drummer never get any, on the other hand the singer doesn't help setting up and packing away at gigs which does piss me off but then I think "well he gets the gigs" so I put up with it. Most bands I chat too seem to have one member who gets most of the gigs
8. now I don't get too hung up on intonation but I've just fitted new strings to my MIA P bass and I thought I'd check the intonation, now if I set it the perceived way same note open and on the 12 fret the first 5 or 6 frets tend to be sharp (I believe this is not uncommon) which is where I do most of my playing, so I was thinking should I set it to be right on those frets or in the conventional way?
9. I know what compressors are supposed to do, it's just, maybe in my case, they don't seem to do a lot, once the overall volume is set the same. Initially I think wow that sounds better, punchier, but then I realise it's just louder.
10.
It takes away the peaks from playing. Smooths everything out. So if you dig in particularly hard, that peak in volume will get "cut off", and it wont sound so harsh. I'm sure there is a more technical way to explain it. But the reason most people would use them, is the reason i don't. I like to have control over the dynamics of my playing, and every compressor i've tried has taken away some of the "colour" of what makes my playing , my playing (for better or for worse )
I play with a pick, so that could be the reason then, and my smooth playing technique lol, I've heard comments on here about the sound certain players get and someone usually pops up with the opinion that it's heavily compressed, can't see it myself
11. having tried various compressors, built in ones on Marshall and Trace Elliot amps and the sym ones on my Zoom B1on and I can't hear what they do, I know they make it louder (as in turn up the volume) but if you get the volume the same with and without there doesn't seem to be very much difference.
12. just watched last weeks episode ( I record the extended show) must say I was quite impressed by Noel, far far better than his knob head brother, even the usually tow curling interview was ok, Noel has an very welcome air of self depreciation about him, Didn't think the first song was particularly like Ca Plane Pour Moi. I suppose it depends whether you liked Oasis I suppose, a lot of BCer's didn't seem to rate them I thought they were ok
13. done 3 weddings in about 10 years, it's true what everybody has said, we did got down a storm at one wedding though, my own daughters, of course we weren't getting paid but the sight of my ex wife and my new partner dancing side by side was payment enough
14. we had a flirtation with subs, but decided they weren't worth the effort of carrying them around and storing them, if you're doing a gig that's big enough to need subs there's usually a PA provided
15.
Dang, how'd I miss that one. Mile Stone . Blue
don't worry we knew what you meant without having to point it out
16.
Played the first verse of "Thrill Is Gone" in a different key than the rest of the band last weekend. That'll get you noticed. Blue Blue
I do it all the time, trouble is I don't notice
17.
Hi pass filters allow frequencies above the selected frequency through and attenuate those below it.
obvious really which still begs the question why would a bass player want nothing below 250Hz?
18. Hi pass filters confuse me does that mean nothing above 250Hz gets through or nothing below it, either way why would a bass player want a channel with a 250Hz hi pass? especially with an 11 band eq section, just curious
19. nearly chocked on my cornflakes, what a rip off, anybody who buys one of these definitely has more money than sense, This is more my price point https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/RockBag-by-Warwick-Student-Line-Bass-Guitar-Gig-Bag-Black/1JPF
20. I suspect there's quite a few converted guitarists on here, I'm one for a start, no evidence for this but we usually give the game away by playing with a pick, could be a poll in there somewhere
21. I never fancy moving on from MIA Fender P, don't know whether it's perfect for me, doesn't seem a lot wrong with it and it's comfy, bit like an old pair of slippers, and being a lefty I don't get a lot of choice
22. hang on, the singer wants to do an instrumental???????????????
23.
Me neither and I like the Undertones but it's one of their weaker songs and one I always skip Anyone recall That Petrol Emotion which was formed by ex-Undertones? A fine and underrated band who were much better than the Undertones IMO.
the Undertones first album is one of my favourites, my vinyl copy doesn't have Teenage Kicks on it We play it most gigs so I don't really want to hear the Undertones do it, going a bit off thread here
