Wear something that you wouldn't wear in the street, you are entertaining after all.
yep, sometimes I'll walk in my local straight from a gig, and I'll get "had a gig tonight then?"
My account is currently suspended after I tried to send my phone No to a seller who posted very little info about an item they were selling. No weight, hardwear info or info on the timbers on a custom bass - I was hoping to discuss the item before bidding - Ebay not understanding about this and read me the riot act.
I must be out of the loop, I was able to send my phone number when I tried
I did not know that. How are you supposed to do cash on collection? It's collection-only.
there must be a way round it, can't you just message them via ebay on the pretext of asking a question, and arrange it? I can see why ebay don't want you to do it, people do the deal and the seller just withdraws the item and avoids selling fees, not that I would do anything like that

difference recording drums with 4 mics or more
PaulWarning replied to fiatcoupe432's topic in Recording
I did find out the other day about how important it is to get all the drum mics in phase, i.e. the sound reaching the mics at the same time, so if you could use one mic it would get round that problem though there is software to get round this problem -
when I first started playing guitar I plugged into an old reel to reel tape recorder (valve amp) turned the record level right up and pressed the record button and got a very nice distorted guitar sound out of it at low volumes, as an added bonus the green record level light (remember those) osculated until the strings were in tune with each other, this in the days before electronic tuners were invented

Is there any really bad new gear out there?
PaulWarning replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
Laney amps... Carlsboro amps.... Horrid things.
I think the question was aimed at modern gear not old stuff, Carlsboro went bust years ago I believe and Laney do decent amps these days in my experience anyway. Probably some noname Chinese copies need to be stayed away from unless they're for decor only. -
just google it, I've used different firms every time to get the best deal
Noel Gallagher - did he 'borrow heavily' from Plastic Bertrand's Ca Plane pour moi or was it just me?
or Jet Boy Jet Girl
The problem with jamming is that when people are undecided what to play it often descends into dreary 12 bar blues stuff. Or worse you end up sounding like the Grateful Dead
the problem with jamming is, whilst it might be fun for the participants it bores the arse off anybody unfortunate enough to be watching therefore should always be done in private

Best and worst bass gear purchases for 2017?
PaulWarning replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
best, a couple of Fender V2 cabs, 2 x 8 and 1 x 12, both weigh about 12KG and sound excellent with my Trace Elliot SMX GP12 AH 250 amp (I think I bought that last year so doesn't count), and the best bit? they only cost me £100 of ebay, must try to stop being so smug about it, and thanks to whoever gave me the heads up on them on here. Worst, also a tip on here, an early 70's Japanese Columbus P bass, nothing wrong with it once I sorted out the awful intonation but I soon realised it was a pointless purchase it was never going to replace my MIA P bass. -
I have no idea what sound guys do to my signal or what the house heard. However in small clubs/bars most folks are going to hear my amp. Blue
hence, the bigger the gig the louder the bass drum
-
No one at a lot of live gig's notice the bass player because the sound engineers eq the bass drum so it takes up all the bass frequencies, and you cant hear the bass guitar at all.
not always the case, but it does seem to have been the rule, the bigger the gig the louder the bass drum, but recently I've noticed this happening less often, maybe I've been lucky or, hopefully the fashion for having a loud kick drum is in decline

Is it too late for me to learn to read sheet music?
PaulWarning replied to Rocker's topic in Theory and Technique
thanks for that. I guess it depends whether the original composer could write music, otherwise it's down to what someone thinks it is -
nobody will notice the bass player if they stand at the back staring at their fretboard not moving, feet slightly apart one knee slightly bent, wearing the obligatory scruffy trainers blue jeans and black t shirt with some bands name on it, but it's true singers and to a lesser extent, guitarists get the most attention, I'm ok with that, the singer has to deal with all the slightly pissed punters after the gig, he's good at that, he just talks about himself

Is it too late for me to learn to read sheet music?
PaulWarning replied to Rocker's topic in Theory and Technique
can't read and have no motivation to learn but I've asked this question before and nobody answered, how accurate is sheet music? Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember a quote from John Lennon on the subject of Beatles sheet music, his reply was "That's not what I play" and I've got a Never Mind the Bollocks sheet music book I bought years ago when I first started on guitar, it's got minor chords in it and stuff, that's not right either -
to be honest I find it really difficult to hear slight nuances when it comes to tone.
me too, I think a lot of it is in the mind, spend £170 on a new pedal, you're bound to think it's better, in the short term at least
They are heavy, but not any heavier than most of the other gear released at the time. I know that it a legitimate question, but sometimes I find the 'how much does does it weigh?' discussions to be as ubiquitous as the 'is it good for metal?' discussion.
had a Trace combo, SMC GP7 1 x 15, I soon got fed up with carting it around, not only heavy but cumbersome as well, now a Trace head (mines about 13KG, a one handed lift) with lightweight cabs is a nice compromise IMO, but yes the race to get the smallest lightest head possible (Trace Elliot with their Elf being the latest extreme example) does seem a bit silly to me
I`d look for the highest power as possible, not to go really loud, just so that you don`t end up with a PA that squeals feedback as soon as you get the vox loud enough. Nothing worse than a band where you can`t hardly hear the singer.
yep, nothing worse than muffled vocals, but you need more research than just going for the highest advertised power rating, as has been discussed in other threads, there's watts and then there's watts, bazztards suggestion seems sensible, but don't ask the sound man we got in York the other week
-
sure hope the Police don't take two years to clear him, their usual investigation time it seems, we need him in Australia Whoops wrong thread, not sure how that happened
I don't know about Alan Lancaster but as far as Rhino Edwards in Quo is concerned you only have to hear his work with Judy Tzuke to tell he's a more than competent bass player. Some very strong players in Chickenfoot but M Anthony seems to hold his own.
Alan Lancaster was one of the reasons I took up Bass, nothing over complicated but just seemed to nail the Quo groove along with John Coghlan , they were never the same after they sacked them
Wattage is a measure of power not volume. That's decibels. Asking if (say) 300 watts is loud enough doesn't make any sense. The volume you hear is a complex interaction of the power the amplifier produces and the efficiency of the cabinet. That is a lower wattage amp could quite easily be "louder" than a higher wattage amp with a less efficient speaker design. It's exactly the same as asking if a 50W bulb is bright enough - what sort of 50W bulb? It's also why guitarists can get away with a much smaller amp and still make your ears bleed. The volume maths also depends on frequency. Bass notes need much more power to produce the same volume as higher frequencies. BTW... if not obvious the wattage of the speakers means nothing. A 200W speaker is not louder than a 100W speaker.
it also depends how the watts are measured, some manufacturers use different ways, peak and stuff like that
-
Yup, i agree there's discrepancies in manufacturers figures, but not enough to really bother anyone that they're down on power. If say a TE 300 was 50 watts louder than xxxx 300 watt amp, there wouldn't be a noticable difference
it's a bit more than that, my 250 watt TE seemed as loud if not louder , as my Rumble 500, but it is a difficult thing to judge, I've never run out of power with either, but I did use my Rumble as an extension cab with my Trace for a while, the speakers blew
-
we use a yamaha EMX 512SC (it's advertised as 500 + 500 watts but it's not really, RMS is more like 175 +175 watts) with Wharfdale Titans and no name monitors, always been plenty loud enough, pubs and social clubs (especially) don't want you too loud, the Yamaha is class D and as light as a feather the Titans are a different story, I'd use yamaha again but look for lighter speakers, powered speakers are ok but you have to run power cables to them all
-
So then, how loud is loud enough .. 200 watts ? If 450 watts is very loud indeed, then going to a 200 watt amp isnt going to make much difference, according to the maths
on top of everything there's watts and there's watts, Trace Elliot watts seem, by common consent, louder than Class D watts for instance, or could it be they just sound louder because they distort better, and then there's valve watts as well.
