2. Update, sent the Rumble back to Gear4music, didn't get charged the tenner for sending it back, got it returned about a fortnight later with no communication at all, tried it out at practice and it sounds fine, so thumbs up for their repairs and commitment to the extended warranty but 0 out of 10 for communication, a result all the same.
 3. depends on the gig with my band we all bring the gear in 4 cars, PA backline drums etc, we're usually the only band on, but occasionally if I do an open mic in Nottingham I'll use public transport because of the parking problems,
 4.
I never cared much for TE amps until the series 6 SMX heads appeared. They were a game changer for me. I still play the SMX600 head I bought in 2000, though I´d never use it for recording. But for giging they are the weapon.
funnily enough when we were recording our latest album the engineer said "you're not going to use the Fender Rumble for recording are you?" "no says I I've got T E SMX GP12 now" and his little eyes lit up, got a really good bass sound on the album, so ones mans meat and all that
 5. some of the trouble may be people trying to improve their playing by performing with better musicians than they are, frustrating if you're one of the better musos, or trying to find out how good they are, as well as the totally delusional ones.
 6. I've struggled with this too, a lot of it's to do with the mix, if the kick is too high it masks the bass and that's what you'll hear, however you boost the lows, having said that I've heard some really prominent bass on pub juke boxes that I can't get at home, but I think that's because there's no treble on them, but I've messed about with EQ till I'm blue in the face, if the bass drum is higher in the mix than the bass guitar that's what you will hear I'm afraid edit, or maybe I've completely misunderstood the question
 7.
Well to be fair, my guy didnt say he would wing it. It just so happened his set list had a lot of songs we were also doing. They just werent the ones we had asked him to learn and it could have been a complete waste of our time. Jumping forward to this year we had (until a few days ago) a guitarist who gave us a long list of songs that he knew, but it turned out he didnt really know how to play them very well. Had all the talk, knew all the tech stuff about the keys etc, but when it came to playing the songs, it was depressing. Had a few rehearsals but even our drummer had to tell him what was needed for some of the most basic cover songs. Had a huge array of FX, all sounded tinny and lacking substance. Even said we couldn't do Stuck in the Middle because it has two guitar parts. Same with Great balls of fire. Couldn't do that as its piano heavy and he couldn't get the guitar to fit (and we dont have a keyboard player). There was always a reason why we couldn't get through any of the basic covers, and this form a guy who had been gigging covers for years. Really nice bloke but after all these years of making sure i turn up and i do the job i just dont have the patience to be in a band with people who spend MY time working out their parts at rehearsals because they haven't done their homework, Give me someone that can wing it every time over someone who talks the talk but ends up with excuses and no result. Sorry, rant over......
my comment wasn't aimed at your post, just a general comment about auditioning new band members, if they can't be bothered to learn a couple of songs for an audition it doesn't bode well for the future I would have thought
 8. I think anybody who walks into a audition with the line "Haven't had time to learn any of the songs you sent me, but it's ok I'm good at winging it" should be instantly shown the door, on the other hand any band that ask someone to learn an entire set for an audition is taking the piss
 9. saw a Sweet tribute a few weeks ago at Rock and Bike festival Sweet 45 I think they were called, excellent, highlight of the weekend, most people don't realise how many hits they had
 10.
I too have wondered this and despaired as the 2x8 cab is the only thing I'd be interested in from the new range...
I may be talking out my arse here but is it that expensive compared to a Bareface cab, Cameron if you want a 2 x 8 Fender did a V2 light weight if you can find one second hand http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/fender-rumble-2x8-bass-speaker-cabinet, I've got one and I'm well happy with it.
 11.
Does anyone on this forum ever listen to anything that was released in this century? Most of these suggestions would be what the kid's grandparents grew up listening to.
two answers, 1. All the good songs were written in the 20th Century, 2.Average age on here is high so we all like stuff from our youth
 12.
I got into a whole load of music through my tutor that I'd never encountered before. My dad's choice of music was and is fairly bland. My tutor got me into the whole jazz thing, and then solo bass by lending me an early Michael Manring CD. I think the idea is, we all have favourite or inspirational players, so name 5 albums that you think epitomise great bass playing.
if a tutor had lent me a Jazz CD I don't think I'd have picked the bass up again, don't like Jazz and I don't like bass solo's, more of a Ramones type of guy myself , each to their own. edit, just seen name 5 albums that epitomise great bass playing, the answer is if you like the song you'll like the bass line, personally, Macca did some great bass lines, but, I like the Beatles anyway, London Calling has a very interesting bass line, but sometimes just hammering away on the root note works like the Ramones, Seg Jennings out of the Ruts is a very good player IMO, but I usually think that getting the groove of the song is more important than the actual notes played. But if was teaching someone how to play bass my first question would be "What songs do you like?"
 13.
How bizarre is all this? I get the impression that a number of posters on this thread don't actually have children. The only answer that will actually get you anywhere is, "What/who do you like listening to? Fine, play along with that then." If I'd asked my father what to listen to if I wanted to hear great basslines, I'd have spent the next 20 years listening exclusively to Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra. Your kids don't want to listen to "your" music. That's part of being your kids.
just what I was thinking, we all started playing because we wanted to play stuff we liked, not what our old man liked, or what the tutor liked, that's enough to put anyone off
 14.
didn't someone once find offence in that emoji on blues' behalf? despite blue himself never actually being offended by it? people are so set on being offended (especially on other peoples behalf) that other people are not allowed to be humorous for fear of offending people who are neither offended by nor involved in the humour. it does feel at times that some people do get annoyed for the sake of being annoyed
indeed, perceived offence is far more prevalent than actual offence
 15.
Sacred Reich - War Pigs Only cover I know that beats the original.
you've not listened to any covers of Bob Dylan songs then, especially Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower
 16. this may be a really stupid question form a none reader, but is notation always accurate?
 17. but wouldn't we all love it if Bill was back on bass? (especially the young girls with big assets) also I've found that when big bands use Deps they're usually low in the mix, Jumpin' Jack Flash sounded all wrong to me when I saw a live recording of it
 18.
Many have wrong bits in them, but as a starting point, and for bits that are difficult to hear, I find TAB is an excellent tool. Once you have the song pretty much sussed you can usually identify the bits that are wrong pretty easily.
this^ the reason I've never learned to read 'proper' music is rather like why I've never learned finger style, I've never had too, bit like learning a foreign language, if you're not going to need it what's the point?
 19.
They can but that situation wouldn't arise. The point is we are a collection of musicians providing their own take and their job. I really am lucky aren't i.
a touch arrogant maybe?
 20.
Yeah i think my defenses were just up due to the tension about the gig situation, also due to the guitar player not learning the songs meaning i had to lead the songs, always difficult when you feel you are carrying someone else
Hey we've all been there, it's difflicult to be diplomatic sometimes, and things get taken the wrong way very easily
If they want you to.play what's on the record they should pay you the same amount JPJ would get. I'm so glad I'm in my band. We play our versions of other people's songs. Make most if it up as we go along. Have a lot if fun and get paid well
that's fair enough, but if someone thinks that the changes you've made don't work they should be able to say so, in the nicest possible way
 21.
Well i think it was somewhere along the lines of"can you not play that fancy slide bit as they don't play that in the original song" i forget the exact words used
depends how it said, I think it's a bit sad that band members can't have a conversation about how a song is played without others taking offence, but like I said it's the tone that's important
 22.
I once did a dep gig where the only full time member was the singer (although though the dep drummer used to play nearly as many of their gigs as the official drummer). A couple of months later they did a gig where everybody on stage was a dep - even the singer / band leader couldn't make t...!
wasn't Dr Feelgood was it?
 23.
Thanks for 'going on', John! This is an interesting checklist for me as I have my first (proper) dep gig coming up on Sat and I'm still a bit concerned about a couple of the things on your list. In particular, song arrangements. They are all Rolling Stones covers, one or two in different keys which they have told me of in advance and I'm fine with. It's just the arrangements I'm concerned about. If they are exactly as per the original recording then fine, but if they suddenly chuck in an extra chorus or do a longer/shorter intro then I'll need to be on my toes! Also how are they ending the ones that fade out on recordings? Plus I still don't know the estimated start time. Just been told we're 'last on'. Also been told 'don't worry, have fun, it's just a charity gig'. I'm not really comfortable with that attitude - there is still an audience there who are going to want to enjoy it. I don't expect they'll mind if I don't sound exactly like Bill Wyman, but I think they might notice if I'm still playing a final chorus when the rest of the band have stopped, lol! :-) Having said all that, I'm still looking forward to it. I was really pleased to be asked (I previously played in a different Stones covers band and sax player who is in both bands recommended me). And I love playing all those old Stones hits, so as long as I turn up at the right place and time I think I can probably wing it!!! :-)
this sort of cropped up at recent gig, a friends band were doing Holiday in Cambodia, as we do, our singer was asked to go up on guest vocals of course up he gets, I'm thinking I wonder if they're doing the album or single version, I counted the length of the solo, single version, as we do, they get to the end where we do the album version outro, our singer did it, the rest of the band did the shorter single version, a complete car crash ensued
 24.
We're doing a gig in about three weeks with a dep drummer. I won't lie that I am a little concerned...I think we have one rehearsal with him and another half rehearsal (we're playing another gig the night after the first gig and want to have a run through with our actual drummer). Our original guitarist came back for a show once, we did do a set based more around his tenure within the band and that went OK.
at least drummers can't play the wrong notes we've only used deps twice and that was old members helping us out, never used a total 'outsider' can't say I'm keen, as Hiram said it just wouldn't be the same, even well rehearsed deps do things differently, when you go and see a favorite band with a different line up it's never quite the same, if any members of ours are unavailable we don't do the gig, doesn't happen very often, we're all only in one band
 25.
Was it an airbus?

Too soon, man. Too soon.
yep, there are some people bad taste jokes don't work on, Buddy Holly is one of them, I've always found he has total respect
