  1. Hard to put a finger on it, as it was more sounds than visual. Seeing Bill Wyman on TOTP laying down a groove probably had some influence 🙂
  2. Well folks, I was generously offered the loan of a Dr. J Sparrow. It's great as an amp simulator, and I found it's influence on the sound of the bass was profound, actually 'overruling' pickup selections so it became the main determinator of the sound I was getting, but the overdrive just wasn't gritty enough. So I eventually ordered a MojoMojo which cam this morning. I set everything at 12 o'clock and BANG! There's the sound I've been chasing. All three of the things I want but perhaps haven't been able to express at the start of this search: (1) A distorted sound that 'growls' rather than 'fizzes' - not too bright and preserving the underlying tone rather than imposing all its won character. (2) It gives a compressed sound dynamic but with changing tone, so the distorted sound gradually smooths to a clearer one (just like a good valve sound). (3) It works well up the neck. So I'm happy!
  3. Hmm found some mando tab and it's not even in the same key as in that video. Anyone got a link to a reliable tab? : This chap has it, although I think the real version is messier.
  4. Hopefully not, but taking the strings off and resetting everything might mean it needs a small adjustment.
  5. No... it's too much for me. You'll be enjoying Elaine Page's music from the shows next, no doubt with a glass of prosecco. I need some music with character...
  6. Oh with me it's just attempting basic folk rock stuff like matty groves or john barleycorn (just the melodies, not solos!) Still sounds like pure pain...
  7. Just then, about 1/4 - 1/3, enough to overlap one pair of fixing screws. You aren't aiming to raise the neck but to angle it very slightly. 1/2mm at the pocket will give you 2-3mm at the bridge, allowing you to raise the bridge (and strings and then pickups)
  8. Allright Mama by Elvis. Car crash ending, he skips an entire bar, the bass stumbles to a halt followed gradually by Elvis...
  9. Shim the neck with a bit of credit card at the bridge end of the pocket.
  10. Violin, I can't bear the sound I make.
  11. There is a time in every man's life, a couple of decades after he has put Radio 1 aside, when he has to make a big decision that will set the pattern of his life thereafter. Planet Rock or Radio 2?
  12. I found it online but the scags want to access all my contacts! Turns out Academia.edu may be a bit of a dodgy operation.
  13. Good to hear from you, Blue. Stay safe.
  14. Must remember that excuse...
  15. I love the audience awkwardly trying to move to something which, whatever it is, is certainly not 4/4... P.S. thanks for introducing me to that 🙂
  16. You don't listen to Planet Rock very often then 🙂
  17. Eric Idle on guitar? OK it's Bernie Marsden, but he sure looks like Eric there!
  18. I like to be able to get some clank a la Entwhistle, but don't like buzz. It's very, very personal. even down to where you play.
  19. I think on all the Lemmy-era albums it's his basslines that provide the fundamental melody line for the stand out songs; the keys are often sound effects and the guitars mostly go between powerchord chug and psychedelic noodling.
