I wonder if the frets had some sort of coating the oil washed off. I have seen badly finished instruments with lacquered necks where a coat of lacquer has been left on the frets!

Me. I couldn't source a decent case to fit a Jag SS. I used a nylon dog blanket the dog had torn a hole in, but you could use a new one. <edit> I'm not joking. I don't think anyone produces material specifically for lining guitar cases, they just use a range of other materials, e.g. as used for soft toys. If you want the 'short fake fur' type of lining it is available off the roll but for the quantities needed for a guitar case a small throw or blanket is possibly the cheapest solution. It looks good (it was a candy apple red dog blanket) and works well (IMHO): The case is 12mm planed softwood strips and two sheets cut from 3mm MDF. If I was doing it again I would cover in proper Tolex-type vinyl, the one I chose is a lovely colour but easily scratched.

All good, but my definition of New Wave would exclude the Jam and Killing Joke. Just shows how vague 'new wave' was at the time and how much vaguer it is now!

For the record the TGI Powerbox has 1 x 18V 2 x 12V 1A 1 x 9V 1A 5 x 9V 100mA So a bit more welly than some. Includes a five-way splitter cable as well as several single ones and a polarity reversing cable. And as the silken-voiced salesman pointed out - four international adaptors for my world tour...

Well at the risk of causing further upset, lets recap and see what we appear to be facts: Oiling your fretboard can make it look and feel more pleasant. Over oiling can cause problems by softening the fretboard. Oiling varnished fretboards can cause unpleasant streaking. Then some points which are matters of opinion, but less contentious: Sellers of fretboard oil emphasise the benefits of their products to help drive sales, which may encourage over-use. Significant damage is rare and moderate use of fretboard oil doesn't seem to cause problems. Custom fingerboard oil isn't significantly different in performance or effects, but smells more pleasant. My personal opinion: More instruments are ruined through over adjustment of truss rods and clumsy customisation; no-one is going to say 'stop adjusting your truss rod' or 'don't fit new pickups'.

I saw the Hamsters once and 'Snail's Pace Slim' (Barry Martin) sprayed his guitar's neck with WD40 between every song.

That's where I got it from. The >90% really means <100% Other components not being listed means they are both not considered hazardous and in very small quantities, in this case I believe it's limonene, probably in well <1% quantities. If the SDS was more up to date it would probably be listed. I don't like linseed oil myself as it's effectively a varnish. Raw and traditionally produced 'boiled linseed oil' should be safe, but that produced by industrial processes isn't boiled but has plasticisers and other potential nasties in it. Check out the Bartoline (made using a metal catalyst) MSDS and compare it to the Rustins one.

My basses are all for playing not decoration 🙂 But I respect other people's instruments. Plus most playing at a BB is done sitting down, so much less potential for buckle rash etc.

That contains Polydimethylsiloxane i.e. it's a silicone polish. The last type of polish you want on any quality wood or painted item as it effectively prevents any other surface treatment/ refinishing/touching up. Even stripping to bare wood may leave contamination leading to poor refinishing. Anyone who is into caring for their car avoids silicones like the plague. You could do worse than use ordinary Mr Sheen... most furniture polish these days are silicone free, although back in the 90s silicone was the rule not the exception.

Section 2 - Composition and Information on Ingredients MATERIALS WT% TLV PEL CAS# White Mineral Oils >90% 5 mg/m3 5 mg/m3® 8042-47-5 Basically it's light mineral oil with a bit of scent. As snake oil is basically light mineral oil with a scent added, yes you probably can say D65 is snake oil. But note the intended use - no nourishing, hydration or protection. Its intended use is to clean (it does help remove greasy deposits/dead skin) and return luster (which is kind of like lustre, I imagine). I use sewing machine oil or D65 (because I like the smell and the bottle dispenses much smaller amounts than my sewing machine oil bottle). But I don't saturate, I just do it because it looks and feels nicer than dry wood.
