  1. I'm not convinced the left hand/right hand argument makes much sense; as a right-handed person the movements required of the left hand are just as complex, precise and time-critical as those of the right, just different.
  2. If it moves, the fixing will gradually break down the plasterboard and fail. Use a proper plasterboard fixing like in the video I posted earlier in the thread.
  3. 3 1/2 hour gigs suddenly don't seem quite so bad!
  4. Tim Blake: "Hold my pint..."
  5. Has anyone thought about the touch screens at most supermarkets?
  6. All the drivers have been replaced with new Eminence units, which undermines some of the case for originality... The irony is @fleabag is right about monetary value; it cost next to nothing. I've seen the preamp alone sell on here for what I paid for the whole combo. Ditto I've seen the speakers (Alpha 10s not Beta's, sadly, advertised go s/h on eBay for what I paid) so I could double my money and and that would leave me with the power amp as well as a large box... so value isn't an issue. Although I'm 57 I can lift it no problem at the moment (which embarrassed the young lad I bought it off - his mate who'd come to help him shift it cracked up when I picked it up carried it over to my car and put it in the back car unaided 🤣 ). The plus point of splitting is not just portability, but being able to use it with a smaller speaker and allowing me to use the 4x10 (amd my even bigger Peavey 1x15) when pride asks for a stack 🙂 . The plus point of keeping it original is it's the amp I wished I could have had when I had to settle for a Laney head and I do love the sound. Also folk may think I'm stupid for having a 95lb amp but no-one is going to say 'you need a proper/louder/better sounding amp'...
  7. Why miles per gallon and litres per kilometre?
  8. Saw @dave24421 last night, playing the Flea with Dunlop 1/4 pounders through a Bass Terror and 6x10. Really great 'growling' sound but what struck me was how it kept plenty of power behind the sound right up past the 12th fret, without any compression. Dropped D last song and I could feel my insides wobbling 20 feet from the rig 🙂!
  9. Probably a step too far! I think I might split into racked head and a cab. Mind you I reckon the head will be the best part of 30lbs, a 300W transformer is not small!
  10. The discussion was far more intersting the first time I took part, even if this iteration explores the issues in greater depth 🙂
  11. I'm bilingual 🙂 Metal sales are even more confusing than timber. It's one thing having to buy 6.35mm rod, but getting 10mm when you asked for 3/8" (or vice-versa) is a PITA.
  12. I deliberately avoided mentioning Dylan as he's the epitome of the outstanding songwriter and poet whose work has often been delivered superlatively by others (including Fairport, who were verging on being a Dylan tribute at one point 🙂 ). That said, I still enjoy Dylan's own work - you don't need to be an outstanding performer to entertain and be enjoyable if the material is good (which is why cover can bands exist).
  13. I fully understand, but that's about something more than just musicality, dare I say there's more than a touch of nostalgia involved. Me too, but some of the best versions of Meet on the Ledge don't include Richard Thompson (who wrote it) and what about Matty Groves, originally a cover and some of the later Fairport arrangements by very different lineups knock the Liege and Lief version into a cocked hat.
  14. I tried to return this guitar. I said it was a lemon, but the shop said 'No sir, it's a melon'.
  15. I'm sure you were angelic 🙂 Smashing bass, and great build photos.
  16. I feel that it would be terribly sad if all music faded or died after the original performance. Personally, I think every performance or rendition of a song has the potential to be better than the first; I don't see anything magical about the first effort, and indeed many songs have benefited from a revisit by the original artist. To list examples of songs where I believe a cover, re-recording or live performance is better would be pointless as it's entirely subjective. In many cases - where a song switches genre, for example, it's greatly influenced by social and cultural factors.
  17. There are an uncountable number of web pages dedicated to challenging that assertion; let's agree to disagree. So you feel that such classical pieces should no longer be performed or re-interpreted?
  18. Problem is it would be a one-way process as I'd have to cut the top off the cab for it to be worth doing.
  19. I've got a TE 1110 combo. GP11 Mk. 2 preamp, 300W power amp, 4x10. Would it be sacrilege to convert such a classic piece of kit to a separate head and cab?
  20. So do I!

  22. I like the Guild, can't appreciate G&Ls the headstock is a marmite thing.
  23. Superficially, but look below the surface. Lots of songs written by non-performers; most well known songs covered multiple times and often done better by the cover artist; most bands having multiple personnel changes in their heyday.
  24. Why are people so precious about 'popular' music? It's a bloody good job we don't insist the Four Seasons or The magic Flute have to be performed by the original artists!
