  1. Don't... the evil thought of having Laney probass one side and Trace Elliot the other has already crossed my warped mind. Who needs windows?
  2. Two separate power amps! Unfortunately this document is too recent to cover the one I've just got properly 😞 trace-elliot_GP11-AH350-AH500-MK-V-BASS.pdf
  3. Try giving away a piano on gumtree... "You do realise you will need at least two and probably three people to move it?" "No, it won't fit in a car."
  4. Black trilby, nothing to do with Phil Campbell 😉 I'd been looking for a decent hat for years (decades!) and I finally found it in Sports Direct! It's also useful for keeping sun out of my eyes and rain off my head. I also have a penchant for wearing unbuttoned plaid shirts over a t-shirt. I've been a Neil Young fan since I was a schoolboy - it was only recently I was reading 'Waging heavy Peace' and suddenly realised we have independently arrived at the same style (or lack of it).
  5. Paint logo white, then apply the black. Trust me! <edit> Too late! I see it's been done and rejacted! Looks good, very retro/steampunky feel with that wood and aluminium panel.
  6. Rock won't die, it will just evolve and absorb. The 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame' has got rappers in it, by 2030 there will be Grime and Drill artists there as well... By 3019 it won't be odd to class Hendrix and McCartney with Vivaldi and Bach.
  7. Oi! 'ands orf! 😁
  8. I've just got one of these! For less than the going rate for the four speakers (Eminence Alpha 10A) s/h! It's the early version which hasn't got a visible heatsink at the back; instead it's got the larger cutout and L-shape back panel. It was making a bit of a rattle I worried was a damaged voice coil but it disappeared when I took the front grill off - obviously a bit of TLC should cure this. I have some questions: There are no jack sockets in the holes on the back panel, just rubber grommets. I assume I could add one or two (with B wired to disconnect the internal speakers) for an external cab but I don't know the impedance of the speakers or how they are wired. I'd rather not disconnect them and risk getting polarities wrong etc. The speaker fuse is just 3.15A; this seems ridiculously low unless the speakers are 16R (would give about 150 watts) which seems high. If used with the apparently appropriate 4 ohm speakers that would be right for about 30 watts - surely not! Out of curiosity how powerful is this amp likely to be (with gain and volume at 12 o'clock you can feel the air blast two feet away, so this is a bit of an academic question - whatever the power it's LOUD) What does the EC1 LED signify? It doesn't seem to be power amp clip? Is there any benefit in using the balanced input with a bass? Looking at the wiring diagram for a later version of the GP11 (I think, it has three level LEDs at the business end) it appears that teh slave send and return can be used for a 'post-eq' effects loop is that correct? The model name appears to be 1110 Combo does this tell me anything useful? Finally, has anyone got a link to a manual?
  9. Fair enough, but maybe the 80s was when that innovation and diversity spread beyond a small core of big makers at both ends of the market.
  10. I think the weight is exaggerated a bit, plus they have decent handles! I might add some castors though. It's nothing compared to the 1x18 cab I had years ago.
  11. Funnily enough he had brought a mate to help him carry it. I picked it straight up, carried it to the car and popped it in, while his mate made a suitable comment 🙂 It ain't being strong, it's knowing how to lift... Old guys rule 😎
  12. Just picked up a Trace Elliot GP11 V5 4x10 combo for £130 🙂
  13. During the gig it went back and forth between elation and terror! The high point for me was everyone clapping along to Crazy Little Thing Called Love .. it was when I realised people were actually enjoying the music rather than just enjoying the event.
  14. Have you looked at what I linked to?
  15. Lots of 'real' rics on eBay it seems. Most look a bit healthier!
  16. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-Day_Week I thought thos days were gone, but it's not hard to believe such a thing could happen again now!
  17. 🤣 It's an early one, the actual power seems a matter of speculation but not huge - I've seen both 150 watts and 200 watts quoted. I've also seen lots of comments that TE were 'conservative' in their power estimates...
  18. It ain't falling through! :-0
  19. I remember the three-day week... and I'm not even old!
  20. Things have just got more complicated! I just won this for £131 on eBay: TRACE ELLIOT GP11 MK V Graphic Preamplifier 4x10" Bass Combo Amp. Pickup only, but it's only about 25 miles away. But my understanding is that the 4x10 is 8R and I can add another 8R cab...
  21. You bloody millennials! 🤣
  22. That's when 'new' designs started to come through, before then you had the choice of dated 'violin' style basses, SG type ones or Fenders. Suddenly you had a how load of more adventurous designs and features.
  23. This thread has piqued* my interest! I have a Laney Pro-Bass head from the early 80s, one of the very early ones that doesn't even have a power output marked on it (s/n 1601, very crudely scratched on it!) It's a shameless rip-off of a Trace Elliot with overload LEDs, pre-shape, parametric EQ, 11-band EQ, cheesy compressor (it's worst feature), pre-post FX loops, DI and extra FX loop on the power amp. I actually like the sound and it's immense flexibility this gives, but it needs to be dialled for 'pub gig' volumes and then it become easy for things to get 'farty' - it hasn't really got enough headroom. I'm looking at getting/making a more efficient 300W 1x12 cab to replace one of my two guitar-oriented 2x12 120W cabs. Now this thread has me wondering about ripping out (carefully removing and putting in a safe place) the Laney power amp and PSU, and fitting a SMPSU and a 300 to 500W D-class module with fan cooling (because it's in a big 3/4" ply box). Any thoughts on suitable modules - I assume the ones on eBay for about £17 are not the ideal solution, but at what price point do they become robust and reliable? *Actually I was just looking for an excuse to use the most miss-spelled word on the whole internet!
  24. Dare I mention 6-strings? I have an 80s Korean Tele with a plywood (but nicely finished) body and good neck (and a stacked DiMarzio by the bridge 👿) I'm tempted to buy one of these and have a go at veneering it, £55 off the 'bay:
  25. Grown ups can decide if they want to buy fire-salvage or not! I thought his 'Hendrix' comment was quite funny 🙂 Plus I thought this topic was for 'weird' as well as wonderful...
