Twelfth Night live at Reading Rock 1983. It's a DVD that arrived today. I have ahd an image in my mind of the singer dressed as a WWI offcier in my head for the last 34 years, so confusion when he was dressed perfectly normally... Then song 2 he has a labcoat on, and goes off stage for song 3. Last song, Sequences, he comes on in full WWI kit exactly as I remembered. Amazing that a memory of such a detail can last so long! Good DVD too!

Just played along to Sultans of Swing on Planet Rock. It was in Dm. Played along to it last night and it was in Db m, or very nearly so. Really odd as I've been playing it in Dm for decades! Think it was a bit off. Songs on the radio are usually pretty consistently in key, but are there two versions out there or was it possibly slowed down a tiny bit to fit broadcast timings?

The claim is that modern maple with a poly varnish doesn't age. Clearly nonsense as my 2003 Squier Jazz has a neck that looks like roasted maple, it's gone so dark - makes it look >fifty years old 🙂 . I peeled off the CE logo sticker and it left a noticeably paler patch.

I have this 'orrible feeling that I'll end up making then and not using them... It's great fun stuffing foam in the bridge cover and playing ploppy jazz-ish lines though.

Should confess the Laney I've had for 30-odd years is pro Bass head 🙂

My comments are in jest, although (a) I like the flexibility of playing over a pickup or playing over 'thin air' - I also play over the fratboard quite a lot (not narmally slapping) (b) I also get the feeling that the benefits are sometimes exaggerated. Aesthetically, some ramps are very pretty, some are very foul. IMHO there are examples of both in this thread,

I find most live music worth listening too. That doesn't mean I can't crack up at some of the antics folks pull. Personally I am unsure what running round in your pants does - if you want to shock, get nekkid! If you want to entertain, put on a circus like Kiss or Madonna... I think I've only, once, found a band totally unbearable, and that was Cornershop supporting Gong (I think) in the early 90s well before their success. It was just tuneless feedback and howling.

Let me correct that for you. I'm quite capable of organising my own itinerary, but if I go to a show I go expecting it to be worth a day of my time. This is likely if there are talks/workshops etc. Outside the M25 venue costs crash so even somewhere like Manchester or Birmingham would be cheap enough to drop the exhibitor fee, get more exhibitors and make a similar profit(or more). Although some 'premier' exhibitors may be less willing to travel. The choice ultimately becomes between small show in London where you need extra-curricular activities to make it worth going, versus a bigger, more diverse show outside London that might be able to keep you engaged all day. I have been involved with various exhibitions (not musical) over the last six years. They have all be hit hard by the internet meaning people go to look rather than buy. The ones that are succeeding outside London do so by maximising the display/lecture element AND attracting lots of smaller traders. London's advantage is a ready audience on the doorstep with minimal travel costs, but expensive and time consuming for anyone from further afield. London-based people are less likely to travel elsewhere (after all the rest of the UK is shite, isn't it?) but places like Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester have big catchments from the rest of the UK. Hmm ... might take a look at the Merseyside Guitar Show, haven't been to Liverpool for a few years.
