  1. I have a Lidl one(!) it works and if it is anywhere near the specs printed in the booklet (it probably is) more than good enough for my needs.

  3. Don't forget, the surest way to write a bestseller in the US is to 'explain' why successful people are successful and how you can emulate them. Changing your parents is rarely given as an option.
  4. You only start to approach true proficiency in any endeavour when you realise just how much you have to learn. I know I am making progress because I finally understand that listening to and watching other bass players and seeing what they do and when and thinking about how it relates to my own playing shows up so many things I could improve.
  5. The fundamental problem is that most amps don't have that sort of data available. Even 'responsible' manufacturers don't give totally transparent information. For example Marshall and Orange give reslistic ratings, but for two very similar designs Marshall rate 50W and Orange 30W, because they measure at different levels of THD. You won't find this in the manual.
  6. Yes. It should peel off the shiny plastic easily enough if I want to remove the bobbins.
  7. Plus, strings don't vibrate in a neat curve, if you pluck near the bridge there will be extra string excursion near the nut caused by the harmonics. Another reason why a slight forward bow in the neck helps achieve the lowest action for all but the most delicate of players.
  8. comment so this is in my feed!
  9. I had this problem with Wilkinsons. Unashamedly used superglue to keep the bobbins in!
  10. It's only a one-watt fan, but it's a Trace Elliot Watt.
  11. Perhaps the most difficult issue is matching speakers and cabs when it is so hard to understand real world output figures. For example, my main cab is rated '900W RMS (AES Standard)’. Not simple to grasp, and I don't know how it compares to real world figures for bass rather than "mixed programme". Is there an aes standard for amplifiers?
  12. I have a PJB C4, the Elf can just keep up with a relatively quiet drummer in a rehearsal using it, but the sound is good. On the other hand with my AT212 which is 4R, I think it would be fine for most situations.
  13. Elsewhere, I have seen regular discussion of the relative power outputs of different amps. The issue is that some makers use RMS power, some use intermittent RMS power, some use RMS before the onset of distortion, some use RMS with various degrees of distortion, some use the theoretical power if outputting a square wave and some use theoretical transient power measured in various ways... This is particularly true of class D amps where some astonishing levels of output power get claimed. However, what we are really interested in is how much power can an amplifier consistently put out over an extended period (e.g. a whole song). One way is to consider the amps power consumption, as this should be based on real world figures, not hand waving. Power out cannot exceed power in for any extended period. Input power may be given in Volt Amps (VA) in which case a power correction factor of 0.65 to around 0.8 depending on the quality of the power supply will need to be applied to derive watts. I will compare two amplifiers: Bugera Veyron. Claimed output power: 2000 Watts @ 4 Ohms. Rated input power: 110 Watts. Orange Terror. Claimed output power: 500 Watts @ 4 ohms. Rated input power: 690 VA. (Volt-amps, multiply by a power factor of between 0.65 and 0.8 to convert to watts, so 480 to 550 watts). Assuming both class D amps have similar efficiencies, the Orange is consuming 4-5 times the power of the Bugera, which is rated as being four times as powerful as the Orange. Even allowing a dozen watts for the Orange's valve preamp, I smell a rat...
  14. Actually saw someone get the same effect on an Les Paul by switching between pickups (one must gave been turned down) on friday. Unusual technique for blues rock.
  15. The guitar sound is a killswitch. Not a fan of their music, but the ad is honest and not patronising or too arsey. The guitarist's hair looks a bit short to me. Would my ponytail be acceptable?
  16. It does seem crazy that a song written by a freed slave and that was banned by the nazis should be dingled out as politically incorrect.
  17. I haven't used my pedal board for a couple of months...
  18. Agreed! My GoPro would be fine to do what was originally asked.
  19. Yep, it gets confusing when you are using, say 12/14/16-bit RAW or TIFF and 24-bit jpegs, but the Jpeg has the smallest gamut. The real issue is the video formats, most cameras can do much more bit depth (my mono astro cam is 12 bit) for greater dynamic range. I suspect the GoPro gets greater bit depth images and plays with the data to maximise the dynamic range over 8 bits for jpeg and mpeg as many cameras and phones (with HDR type processing do real time processing is ridiculously capable these days). For planetary images I generally use 8 bit video (as it speed up capture, ideally going for high two or even three figure frame rates), as we stack multiple frames, and a couple of thousand is equivalent to 19-bit depth...
