  1. On the whole, the albums with jaw-dropping bass playing skills I don't find hugely inspirational. Even thoughs that I like such as School Days, Heavy Weather and Hounds of Love. The album which had me playing along more than any other (probably about once a week) in the 90s was this one, surprised the needle didn't come out the far side of the vinyl. <EDIT> Actually it's SSSSH! I used to play along to all the time, the bass on Watt is a step up and often way past my skill level then, although I did work out Think About the Times which is one of my favourite walking lines. Any way, Leo Lyons is massively under-rated. Also many albums with Dave Pegg on.
  2. I had to remove small amounts of material (from the body) to attach a Squier P-neck to a Harley Benton (kit) P-body. The neck was rounded at the end rather than cut across flat.
  3. Anything off Born Again by Black Sabbath? I think you are being a bit paranoid, most songs are well mixed, it's only a few albums (Metallica's And Justice for All) where the Bass sound is completely trashed.

  5. Dang taht's a good one to learn. I've been playing with The Super Natural by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.. which went on to become Black Magic Woman by Fleetwood Mac and again covered (well) by Santana.
  6. If you've ever struggled to de-lacquer bass components (I have) to clean them, Windsor & Newton do a gloss spray for artworks that dissolves in white spirit. I've used it to protect clean and polished brass on a Westone and it would also be idea as an easily reverisble protection for piole pieces
  7. Our got cancelled, we're in Wales and playing to 30 people is not likely to bring in a lot for the pub. Still, it was nice to be asked.
  8. Great case and a nice strap, nickel strings, lemon oil and a pointy stick to keep those who say don't use it at bay.
  9. Sound pretty evenly balance on my (decent) PC speakers, although the bass is bottom-heavy.
  10. I have just given my brother (the folky one) my first proper bass amp, a 150W Laney Pro-Bass head together with a 2x12 cab I made containing a pair of 80W Mackenzie PA speakers. Along with a Phoenix/Celestion 2x12 these were my main gigging rig back in the 90s, and I last used them (for a single gig) in 2019. Despite a massive emotional attachment, having acquired a two practice amps, two heads and three cabs this year (as well as other stuff picked up in the intervening quarter-century) it's good to make some space and see them go to someone who won't just enjoy them but has a good chance of gigging them as well.
  11. Can I just say I fully appreciate what this post is about, the only thing I could take issue with is that the Santana album Marathon was released in September 1979, so it technically post-dates the emergence of Level 42, although it's well before they issued any vinyl.
  12. String gauge Action Variations in dimensions of neck, body and bridge Nut height How well the intonation is set up Always amazes me how two basses can have the bridge pieces arrange quite differently, when I set them up for similar action and adjust the intonation in the same way.
  13. My last two houses have had walls with a thick layer of 'vintage' plaster, which greatly benefits from some form of 'binder'.
  14. Mushroom teapot that would be? Mayhap Aldous Huxley could throw some useful light.
  15. I'm protected. I'm wearing an anti-macari.
  16. He was mentored by a bloke known as 'John the Peeler' who went on to some success in radio.
  17. With traditional (123 year old) walls, I use 6mm Rawlplug brand plugs, dipped in Gorilla glue. 1 smooth plugs are useless on walls with friable mortar under plaster. 2 once a hole has opened up its probably too late. 3 don't overtighten, you must not make the fixing twist. 4 Use heavier gauge screws, 4 or 5mm. 6 give several hours for the glue to expand and consolidate.
  18. I had a go last practice. Tried roll over beethoven. Surprisingly easy to play and sing (shout). Main issue pointed out to me was bad mike technique, most of the time they couldn't hear me!
  19. Summat very unusual about that guitar; anyone else spot it?
