1. Re-strung the Status last night.... so incredibly simple! I agree that a headless bass might look 'wrong' or 'odd' to some people, but.... How can we define what is actually right and wrong?
2.
Guitarist magazine's review of a Series II model back in '84 did a similar thing - they took the cover plate off to change the strings - then put an `addendum' in the following issue to say that the string changing system was the quickest on the market. I really must get out more eh?!
I am glad that I am not alone in that. I was thinking that it seemed odd, needing a screwdriver to change strings! It must be my enquiring mind... See a cover and must look to see what's underneath it.
3. Oooooops! I didn't realise that the string retainers would slacken off enough to appear from under the cover... (doh). Thought it was a strange design. Thanks guys.
4. Ok, I have ordered up a set of DBE Elites 40-100. I have another question.... The 4 screws that hold on the access cover for the tuners also hold the tuner assembly to the body of the bass. I assume then, that I should slacken off all the strings before removing this cover.... In order to take the tension off these screws? (Does that make sense?).
5. Thanks.
6. Thanks for the replies. I assume that Roto's and Elites DBE strings will fit? (I tend to always use 40-100 Roto's on my headed basses).
7.
There's no need to have it on hold as im still not totally sure... also how does the weight of each cab compare? Cheers
The 1x15 weighs about 55lbs. The 2x10 weighs about 70lbs.
8. Is there any particular advantage in using double ball-end strings as against single ball end? It seems as though my recently acquired Status 2000 can use either, and using single ball-end would save me from keeping two types of string in stock.
9. The 1x15 is on hold for benzies123. Amp and 2x10 are still up for grabs.
10. Although I agree that it is all down to taste... I will give a +1 to the Squier VM Jazz, it is a lot of bass for the money and perfectly giggable.
11.
PMd
Replied.
12.
Where are you? If you local enough to pick the cab up then i'm more likely to get it...
PM sent.
13. The only problem I have ever had with my Status Basses was a bad earth on the jack socket, which caused intermittent cutting out. (Easy fix). I'd call Rob Green if I were you.
14. Cool. ....and you are fairly local to me!
15. Offers?
16. My first Bass was a 3001. It cost me £220 way back in 1984... used, but pretty much 'mint'. I gigged it for about 6 years, mainly in a blues band. Amazingly deep and very loud. The downside was 'neck dive' and overall weight.... But what an incredible sound! I sold it a few years ago for £450.... and now regret it.
17.
Sorry if I have opened up a can of worms with my original question. Still not sure to go for a 2 x 10 or 1 x 15
.... Or would you be better to open two smaller cans of worms? And if so, should they be stacked vertically or horizontally?
18.
The driver in my trace cab is a 1985 200 watt Fane studio B and it goes much deeper than the Aggie. Put an Eminence kappalite 3015LF in any half decent cab and it will go way lower than the aggie IMO.
I guess that you are asking a lot more of your cabs (bottom end) because of the kind of music you play.
19.
All Trace Elliott 15"s are not created equal. The GS112 doesn't actually go that low but it has a pretty fat sounding midbass hump - however ask for deeper bottom and it will seriously struggle, but then again so will many cabs. Alex
Point taken. Maybe I am not playing 'that deep' to make the little Aggie struggle.
20. I would certainly be into trying something 'different' in the way of cabs, but living out in the wilds of West Cornwall the opportunities are limited. I have to buy 'on-line' so tend to play it safe. My local music store doesn't even stock MarkBass amps because.... "Local folk won't buy those new fangled things". To some extent maybe most people go with what they know. However, I wouldn't say that I chose my current rig on looks.... it definately isn't pretty!
21. Hmmm..... Strange. My Trace 1x15 farts at lower volumes than my Aggie. And the Aggie seems to go much deeper.
22. Now that is UGLY (IMO).
23.
If you apply it to cars we would all be driving round in inexpensive diesels as they do the job of more expensive cars and make sense economy and price wise but when did sense come into buying basses. Its not a case of need, its a case of want.
+1 My wife is cheap to run and gets the job done My girlfriend on the other hand......
24. Jeez! I briefly owned (and quickly sold) a Gibson (Was it a Ripper or a Grabber?) in the early '90s for about £200. How times, and prices have changed!!!
25.
I haven't liked any of the many single 12" cabs I tried, much as I wanted to. None of them were happy with my deep dub tone.
I am surprised you didn't get on with the Aguilar... I am finding my GS112 (No tweeter) to be 'bassier' than my Trace 1x15.
