Could be wrong but I'd say for the player ,when you get to a certain age , a " heavy " type of bass can get a bit much . Imho , in your younger years you could handle most basses with ease but joints / bones/ tendons deteriorate as we get older. There are many designs now made with basswood for example , which is a lot lighter imho. I have a Washburn status headless which looks light and lovely , but if someone else picks it up they'll also say " that's heavy " Its made of ash/ walnut . The best bass I have in terms of feel , is my Vester Custom fretless which is great . I haven't weighed it , but it's sooo heavy. It's a copy of a Warwick which I have . The Warwick is the lightest bass I own ..or is it the Jack Daniels bass? 🤔 I agree , and say if it's not a problem playing it then keep it .

I used to get withdrawal symptoms if on holiday etc back in the day . These days now that my gear is home use only , I spend more time on my synths ( with the odd bass line here and there ). Not every day , but am working on it . If I was spending time away for more than a couple of days , I'd be taking the iPad mini which has many musical apps Very handy !

Becky Baldwin joins Mercyful Fate
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to Rich's topic in General Discussion
Great stuff ! Love the old Fate and early king Diamond material . For some reason I lost interest over later part of their careers . Shame Michael Denner isn't with them . Their musicianship is some of the best in metal , despite the Marmite opinions of King Diamond . I can't / won't open Facebook link unfortunately , but will have to check her stuff out . She must be a hell of a player to fit n with them. Timmy Grabber RIP -

Will be watching this at some stage . Must admit I don't know too much about him , and I missed him on my radar . I saw him on you tube giving the best demo of a boss multi fx unit I've seen .. Great player- 1 reply

I only have the iPad apps . Not sure if it is complicated to use . I have a boss sp202 which although very ancient and limited these days is great fun , and easy to use. Last year I nabbed the boss sp404sx ( discontinued also) just because it has a lot more storage via sd card . I sometimes think of maybe getting a maschine or akai mpc one replacing these , but the thought of menu diving and complications put me off . Hope you have fun with it . I guess you tube is the way to go for you ..

Question for Metal players
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to MikeTheMisfit's topic in General Discussion
Cliff used various guitar effects . When I met him, he said " get a phaser" . I think Jason's sound has more of an attack trebley sound in comparison . Amazing when you think that Cliff was total finger player and Jason plectrum. As for Ian hill , most of his stuff was solid supporting background with drums . I must confess as not being a huge fan of Dave ellefson that I didn't pay too much attention to his sound . I do however. Own his GK App on my iPad which I paid for which needs updating and cannot use now .. -
Question for Metal players
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to MikeTheMisfit's topic in General Discussion
If playing down the dog 'n' duck I'd say it's best to keep things simple . Plus sounds differ at different venues. What could make a difference in sound , is if you change from using a pick to fingers etc for certain songs you are doing . Then of course , the type of bass ( active or passive ) and the amp ( Galien Kruger for bright / Aguilar for heft etc) Just a thought .. -
Ampless setup … advice anyone ?
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to Geek99's topic in General Discussion
Mmm...I have a zoom B3 which has a d I socket , so I'd assume that's okay if I was gigging .( I won't be ) .plug into p.a. I did have the zoom b2 1.u ( can't remember if that had a d.I socket ) which i wouldn't recommend for gigs. I have a Roland bass cube which I don't use as I just use either an audio interface or mixer these days at home. it's really good imho if You just want audio coming out of your zoom , maybe a phono lead from your zoom to your stereo / soundbar ? -

Really struggling with fingerstyle
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to MikeTheMisfit's topic in General Discussion
I. was also running before I could walk for quite some time . That was getting caught up in the slap/ pop/ tap thing when I started getting more confident in my playng . When I was trying to form/ join a band yeas ago my limitations were exposed. A really good guitarist said " F@@k Stu Hamm , get some proper lessons ". Well I took his advice with the lessons .. -

The main GAS issue at present , is the cost of using the combi boiler right now . It is cold -
Really struggling with fingerstyle
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE replied to MikeTheMisfit's topic in General Discussion
Lots of good advice already What kind of music are you into ? Who are your bass influences ? The reason I ask this , is that you may ( or probably ) find a beginners lesson on you tube by one of your favourite bass players. You'll definitely get a feee lesson from 'unknown ' but brilliant teachers on there anyhow . Fwiw, when I first started attempting to play bass I started off with a plectrum . This was about a yea or so before I started going to go to gigs . Then I saw Steve Harris at the music machine / marquee etc and thought I'd better do fingers instead . Troubl is , his style of finger playing is advanced / unique so I was playing out of sync . Years later I stumbled across Rudy sarzo hot licks video . VHS , way before internet . A little cheesy , but it improved my playing a lot .. That was before I had proper 1 on 1 tuition ( wish I kept that up ) . In my latter days while gigging I ended up doing both . One other thing to mention , is that being relaxed about it all is key . It's very easy to get tense and putting undue pressure on yourself by being annoyed by making mistakes ( if that makes sense) .. -
Is the cost of living crushing music?

Elvis will always be gigging -
I have the strap length the same sitting down or standing . As told by Billy Sheehan .

Me first and gimmies do good versions of Summertime , Somewhere over the rainbow plus a couple of others I've probably forgot . Maybe worth having a listen
-
On a slight tangent , I have a few CDs of Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies . Marvellous and hilarious on first few listens , but some things are too 'American ' and may be lost on younger listeners as they may not know a lot of their catalogue . To describe them , I'd say they're kinda pop punk in the style of offspring , but very talented . Nice bass playing too. If I was still into playing in bands, I wouldn't mind doing something similar .

Soul On Fire - the Peter Steele biography

yes granted . 🙂 It was more of a memo to myself, as I and others have contributed to old threads in the past and they soon died off again . That's why I deleted my previous post here . Apologies to all offended . I will probably checkout the recommendation should I get the enthusiasm to do so 🙂 -

Thanks for the suggestion . I do know rock BTW 🙂 . I have and have had stuff from cannibal corpse to Celtic frost etc . I may checkout your recommendation though at some stage . Having said that , Pavarotti was cool and I have watched the three tenors on tv 👍 🙂 -
