1. Steve's track is my favorite. Might have a go next month. Depends on the photograph.
2. Kev! Heehee.
3. Some favourites: Colin Percy Stan Percy with Brian Chris
4. Great band. I recommend going through the back catalogue carefully...
5. Steve Reich - Music for Mallet Instruments Voices and Organ
6.
Loved their stuff up until Relayer, Squier was a huge influence..................and now I think, some things are of their time,...... and that time has gone. Oh well...............sighhhhhhhhh
Same here...
7. A great bassline and one of the smoothest tones. I think it was played by Walter Becker who is a very underrated bassist. Note: arriving on the top octave when the chord changes then plunging to the bottom one very quickly. Chris Squire also does this.
8. Sounds like a good project. I was in Felixstowe a couple of weeks ago killing a few hours on the seafront while my family went to the Suffolk Show. It's changed a bit - there are gastro-pubs and cafes selling salads and stuff.
9.
This is right up there with the best for me: Bass kicks in about 1.45 for the impatient.
This is also one of my favourites. Amazinnnng album.
10. I'm wondering if the two words 'signed' and 'unsigned' still mean anything. Perhaps they still do on Basschat!
11. If you're making music or art of any kind the fight is always against massive public indifference. Bass players are no different as consumers on thus respect. In general they are chronically indisposed to other people's music and peculiarly to the efforts of their fellow bass players as is evidenced in the almost perpetual disinterest in the 'recording' and 'gigs' section. Ironically there are often numerous threads directly related to an inability to find new/interesting music.
12. Best live sound; Percy Jones playing a Wal at the Venue, Victoria around 1979. Never heard anything that compares or comes close. Absolutely staggering sound. Best recorded sound - Chris Squire on Close to the Edge.
13.
General Discussion is for general discussion. Off topic if for arguing.
Aha!
14.
Not with you mate. What do you mean?
If there's an 'off' there must be an 'on'. Sorry if I sound 'off'.
15.
Nope, it would have been a gun with him, not a stick!
I'm must be getting bored with Basschat.
16.
"Was never like that in my day"
Jeez I thought that was Buroughs for a minute
17.
General Discussion If its bass or music related and doesn't fit one of the other more specific forums, then put it here.
On topic?
18. Lots of topics unrelated to Bass here now. I'd prefer it in 'Off Topic'. Anyone moderating?
19. Jimmy Hendrix and Eric Clapton created far more damage than the Beatles, set Pop music back years and spawned Pub Rock™
20. Yep better. Mozart is chronically overrated by middle class Radio 4 presenters and Daily Mail types. His violin tunes and silly requiems are deeply irksome. Blunt on the other hand is a genius in comparison.
21. I've never noticed the bass in Beefheart - only the guitars and drums.
22. People who work in shops can occasionally be grumpy - we all know that - however telling a customer who has driven miles out their way to be there that they can't touch the guitars, that they're wasting their time because they should have brought their own guitar to try out an amp etc etc is downright insulting and a bit weird. I've never been told I can't touch a guitar in a shop ever before. If people want to give him their money that's their business but I personally wouldn't dream of setting foot in there again. Nor would I recommend anyone visit the shop at the risk of enduring such an attitude.
23. His attitude was deeply patronising, proprietorial and prescriptive. He talked to me as if he was talking to a child, lecturing me about the most basic aspects of equipment even though I am several years his senior. It was quite extraordinary behaviour totally inappropriate for anyone in his position. I sent him an email with concerns about his rude behaviour and all I got was a begrudging acknowledgement he 'must have been having a bad day' rather than an apology.
24. I had a horrible experience there. The shop is run by someone with the manner of an uptight prefect. He refused to let me try out basses because 'they were too expensive' said I was 'wasting my time' because I wanted to try out an amp but hadn't brought my bass. When I mentioned I was still using an old H/H amp he looked down his nose at me and obviously didn't consider me a proper customer. I was en route from Wales to London and diverted to pay a visit. Never again.
25. Getting paid to play bass is a terrible job. 1. You can be a session musician but you might be asked to play with one of those dreadful bands that appear on 'Later'. 2. You can play weddings or cruise ships but you'll have to play things like 'Eye of the Tiger' or something by Coldplay. 3. You can teach but you feel suicidal after the first month. Get a proper job.
