1.
Tough Monckyman, here's some more! Vicente Amigo again. This guy is (to use Mrs C's vernacular) bazzing
I still prefer Flamenco WITH dancers and WITHOUT basses.
2. It's been a long hunt... about 25 years or so... but I've finally found a superb compressor pedal, the Taurus Tux: It can produce a huge variety of sounds from squashy to subtle. It's easily the most versatile compressor I've come across. The 'range' knob is interesting; its a tone filter and you can choose how much of the tone spectrum you want compressed from the bottom frequencies upwards. It means you can let uncompressed higher frequencies through if you wish. All the knobs make a big difference, hence the variety of sounds. The operation is noiseless and distortion free. I could never find another compressor that sounded the same as the one in my old H/H amp. This can easily imitate it. I use compression in different amounts on the two basses I use - from medium to light and this handles it really well. This is the video that caught my interest: and also these (very accurate) reviews: http://www.ovnilab.c...tuxsilver.shtml http://www.ovnilab.c.../tuxblack.shtml The product is Polish and there's only one dealer in the UK: http://www.bassbarn.co.uk/
3.
In theory it's possible to mess around with EQ/cross-overs/amplification/cabinets/drivers ad infinitum unti you find your personal version of perfection. In practice, I'm sure it's an utter pain in the... You get the idea. I think the reason that modular midrange cabs aren't readily available is that the manufacturer can't legislate for whic other pieces of equipment you'll be using, and as such, can't guarantee how well they'll all work together. Worse still, the crossover aspect is potentially problematic. Feed a "mid range" cab a full range signal, and odds-on you'll fry it. A passive crossover that can deal with 1kW from a large amp is possible, but expensive and not adjustable/flexible enough for this application. In the context of a full-range cab (such as the Baers/Barefaced/fEarful) it is more cost-effective because it is working with drivers for which it has been designed. The better alternative is the active approach; Bass----Pre/EQ----Crossover-----2x or 3x channels of power amplification----- Low, Mid and High Frequency drivers Which is flexible enough to work in most scenarios. But you'd probably want an extra set of eq in there. One (with the crossover) to correctly eq the speaker system to the sort of response you want, and one to "play" with for tone-shaping. And this is rapidly approaching PA system levels of complexity..
Ah yes that does sound a bit like a mini PA. Thanks for the explanation. I can't really cope with a complicated set up so I think I might as well give up on the midrange cab idea and look for a better all-round speaker and cab.... but where do you try out these things?
4. the hunt for a better set-up has been prompted by a new band. This is a very rough recording from the last gig (in a very echoey room): http://soundcloud.co...-14-by-prescott On this occasion I borrowed the other bass player's Aguilar 12s. You can hear it's boomy with top but it didn't produce much mids even though I had the amp boosting them. I'm also competing with the electric piano which is naturally mid-heavy.
5.
Hi spoombung, What exactly is this dull sounding speaker you're talking about. Do you have a manufacturer, model name or number? What box is it in and is it the original speaker? Balcro.
I'm not sure what it is. It's in a tatty old cab with no markings. In general, I am absolutely useless at picking the right amps and speakers, to be honest.
6.
Crossover operating somewhere about 1KHz to 1.5KHz would be my guess and capable of handling 3-400 Watts. Balcro.
That sounds a bit high. I was thinking 400HZ - 1 KHZ: ie, midrange. I have a dull sounding speaker that could have more a clear midrange. It's a bit boomy. Just looking for a general pupose unit you can chain -up (link) with a bigger speaker really
7. I'm quite surprised there's nothing available. I would have thought its a good idea because you could match it with a dull, bassy 12" and get a hifi sound and it would be easy to carry too.
8. Does anybody know somebody who makes custom cabs...?
9. I can't even put up a shelf. I'm after something ready made...
10.
And of course, whilst I remember... This chap!
Sorry, that's not what I mean.... The mid speaker in a separate cabinet...
11. Good Morning bass people, Does any one make a a modular version of a speaker setup like this: ie, the midrange speaker is in a separate cabinet with it's own crossover and designed to go with a 12" or 10" speaker?
12. Sounds like you were playing too hard. Ease off. Don't play 'vigorously'. It's a lousy idea.

14.
I had a quick blast on one a couple of weeks back just out of curiosity really and have to say didnt think much too it, in my opinion theyve crammed lots of great features into it but forgetten to actually put any real tone in, difficult to dial in what I would class as good basic solid tones and something about the sound in general seemed a bit off, only way I can describe it is artificial if that makes any sense?
Okay, that doesn't sound good...
15. Thought I'd bump this thread as I'm seeking more opinions about this head (you don't hear much about them on the internet). I tried one out a few weeks ago and was quite impressed. Anyone using one regularly?
16. Lovely bass. I was very impressed with one I played recently at the Bass Gallery.
17.
It's like Percy has just got progressively less nice sounding fretless basses each time he moves on. Reminds me of a thread to that effect I posted a few months back when I put forward my view that his nicest, woodiest tone was actually with his fretless Precision back in ealy Brand X days, followed by his Wal in later Brand X days http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1525888
I think it's more the context he plays in, for instance, you can hear him really well on the P-bass on the Eno stuff because the music is quite minimal. You can hear him very clearly on the Wal in the more noisy situation of Brand X because it has a pokey mid- range. But now you can barely hear him because he's looking for a sort of double bass hybrid sound that doesn't stand up well to noisy guitars and drums he seem s to favour... and he's playing a 5 string which makes him even more inaudible. Someone should talk to him about it.
18. A video has emerged: Quite a clanky tone, rough tone to my ears....
19. Molan, great looking bass. What is the nut width on that? it looks very slim.

22.
Myself, my Vigier Passion and The Danny Allan Band at Middlesbrough Town Hall last night
Nice band. The sax player reminds me of Ron Aspery a bit.
23. Surprised no one posted this. Incredible tune!
24. A Carl Thompson. I'd love to try one
