1. Well, the project is finished. I'm quite pleased with it.
 2.
Hello! Compression & hiss is from the camera. The amp is dead silent at normal working volume. FWIW. there is a note about the hiss if you view the clip in YouTube itself, but you won't see it when it's embedded. I'll add a caption to make it clear.
Ah, I see. I notice the amp has a limiter - can you here that working at all? Also what's the high end like? I'd be very tempted to get this combo if it had a proper compressor in it...
 3.
I made a - admittedly pretty crappy - video of mine this morning:
That sounds like quite a compressed tone; is that the video camera or the amp? Where's the hiss from too?
 4.
I've met quite a few luthiers & the odd cab builder and none of them are swimming in profit, in fact most seem to be just about ticking over & covering costs so I really struggle to see how margins could be as great as you suggest.
Molan, take it easy.... I'm not suggesting they're 'swimming in profit' - just that making a box and putting a speaker in it is a lot easier than making a bass! And if you can charge (in the worst example) an eye-watering, mind-boggling, grossly inflated £500 for it (like EBS do) - even calculating all the expenses you mention above - I'm sure it's just a little bit more profitable that making basses! To concede to you -less so, perhaps, with speakers costing £200 - £300.
 5.
Sounds like you've hit on an excellent money-making scheme here. I'm surprised more people aren't doing this if there's an easy £400 profit to make on every sale. . .
Well, you asked for two examples and I gave you two - then I explain how the profit margin is bigger making cabs than making basses...and you don't seem to want to believe me!
 6.
The gallery - http://www.thebassgallery.com/AmpProductLi...=Bass%20Cabinet
Okay £315. Hmmm that's more reasonable...
 7.
Are the margins really bigger? I don't see many UK builders giving up their luthier jobs to make cabs - which ones have done this? I can think of a couple who make cabs as well as basses but they are still pretty rare?
Well, two examples; Mike Walsh's cab making business has eclipsed his bass making by some considerable margin. And Matte from Prometheus has started making cabs too. It's a lot less time consuming and a lot more profitable - anyone can see that - if your materials cost £100 and you can sell for £500. It's just a box.
 8.
Do these guys ship internationally? http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/pr...inet?sku=601041 Eude
I never order anything from the US. Too expensive.
 9.
Ever thought about building your own? a BFM Omni 10.5 can be built for a fraction of the prices mentioned above, and would probably out perform them.
I once built a cab when I was in my teens. Now I can barely put up a shelf.
 10.
Another coupe for the mix... I was wondering how much it is...?
 11.
I'd give this little guy a go >> http://www.mackie.com/products/srm350v2/ We use the 12" unpowered versions of these as part of our PA setup for pub gigs and they're awesome! They tilt back on their side like a wedge too, which is a nice feature... Eude
That looks good... although I am looking for a new cab to plug my old H|H amp in to as well.
 12.
That's a RRP, so more like £400 in real life. But yes, still blimmin' pricey. Where's the money going? It's a US import for a start, there's a degree of prestige and smoke & mirrors magic built into the price, a quality driver, good design, and a well built cab. One of the keys for me was the light weight of the GB cab. Is it worth it? That depends on the customer and what their priorities are. I gulped at the price, but ultimately am happy with the result. I do agree that the Promethean looks like a fantastic proposition, and was sorely tempted.
I can see why a lot of bass guitar builders switch over to the more mundane area of cabinet making; the profit margins are far bigger.
 13.
You mention pokey and hi-fi. If you mean a flat sound then why not use a PA speaker. They usually handle bass pretty well and often go lower than a bass cab and being produced in large numbers they work out pretty good value for money. I use a 12+horn PA speaker for smaller gigs and if I'm honest it sounds much nicer than my 4x10 + 15. If you go for an active version then the drive units have built in protection so you won't need to worry about blowing anything. Most bands have some sort of PA so its pretty easy to try this out without spending anything up front.
Funnily enough, I was thinking of doing just that. You read my mind.
 14. I don"t get it...£492 for this?
 15. Actually I'm amazed how incredibly expensive some of those above are. The EBS is £500 !!!! Seems a lot for a little speaker and tweeter in a box....
 16.
I can vouch for the Promethean Range. The little 10" combo I have is incredible considering the sound, so I'd be quietly confident that the 10" extension cab would be just as good, I'm still incredibly and pleasantly surprised by the build quality too! There's a bit more "real world" info here, not much though >> http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=603591 Here's some more little cabs for the mix too... I think the Ibanez will still offer the most bang for your buck though Hope that helps mate, Eude
Useful info. Thanks.
 17.
Ibanez Promethean? You can get just the 1x10. http://www.bassmerchant.com/item_detail.ph...p;category_id=2
That's a possibility.
 18.
I think Markbass and EBS do.
Google search didn't show anything...
 19.
Bag End 1x10 is a killer cab. We had an impromptu little session last weekend with four different people playing a Genz Shuttle 3.0 through one & it was sitting next to a much larger 1x12 cab. Everyone thought the sound was coming from the 1x12 until I pointed out that I'd wired up the 1x10 instead and the head was simply sitting o top of the 1x12 Cue lots of people checking leads to make sure I wasn't winding them up, lol. The one I have has the Hi-Drive co-ax tweeter but they do one without this as well. They don't actually list these on their site but I have a copy of their price list and both the standard 1x10 & the 1x10 with Hi-Drive are listed as stock items http://www.bassgear.co.uk/products-page/ba...re-ax-hi-drive/
Thanks. Very expensive, though...
 20. Looking for a fairly hi-fi pokey and portable small cab. I've seen single 12's for sale. Anyone do a single 10"?
 21.

Jesus...
 22. Other people always own the worst.
 23. Is there a bass player in Queen?
 24. If only this was 4 strings... Beautiful bass!
 25. Just some points: 1. Double and triple check the builder - the waiting times, the customer support, the communication. Communication is vital. 2. Make sure they have a history of replying to emails and phone calls promptly and do not go on long holidays or absences without telling you. 3. Think twice about ordering from a builder whose business appears to be drying up. There could be a reason for the lack of commissions. 4. Make sure the builder appears interested. This may seen obvious - but some are all burned out with the whole thing and are not very motivated. 5. Play an example of their work - don't order blind. 6. Check they don't have other projects and businesses that they prioritise and take up all their time. 7. Don't pay the whole sum in advance. 8. Scrutinize the spec sheet and make sure you are both really clear about it. 9. Keep a professional relationship. Don't get too chummy and friendly until the build is completed and you're happy with your bass. 10. If possible choose someone fairly local
