When I had mine modified I asked for a deeper neck pocket so the neck sits further into the body. It feels more unified. -

I played one in a shop recently that was very unlike mine - in fact it was quite horrible! The other thing to bear in mind is that the neck is mounted in a very shallow neck pocket (it's quite unusual) and some people don't like this because it feels like the neck and body are on two different levels. -
He's a superb bassist. In fact the whole of the band were immaculate musicians (except Roddy Radiation who sounded like a pub guitarist)

The advantages of an unboken curve at the bottom of the body (examples below) mean you can pivot the bass at any angle very nicely [i]and it will stay on your lap[/i] ...unlike many other basses!

I'm a big fan of that shape - wonderfully designed and superb balance. looks beautiful. Manson basses can be extremely heavy, though.

In a nutshell, I'd like to be more virsatile than I am. However, I've noticed if you get known for playing in a certain style, critics will jump out the bushes when you attempt to change it to fit another situation. I posted up [url="http://soundcloud.com/spoombung/set-in-silver"]this song [/url]recently - it features what I call my 'plunking bass' style - a simple line that complements the song and doesn't compete for instrumental attention. I immediatley received a message via Facebook from an old Stump fan who wanted to know why his favourite bass player had ditched all the flashy stretched harmonics and rapid tremelos. I then had to explain to him that I still do all that stuff but it wasn't called for on this song. I was pretty cheesed off, to be honest.

Would you really trust the advice of a book that uses this form of understatement? The best one I encountered was how to change a brake sensor in a Ford Fiesta Popular Plus. The photo showing the location of the unit failed to mention the crucial detail of whether the item was located in the engine compartment or inside the car ..... and the helpful photo of what the thing looked like didn't give the reader any clues! THE CONDENSED HAYNES MANUAL All makes and models post-2000 For a modern car chock full of electronics, all that's in the Haynes Manual (aka "The Haynes Bumper Book of Jokes") is: Routine Service: Take it to a main dealer and hand over a large amount of cash. Advanced Service: Open the bonnet. Decide all that stuff is far too scary. Proceed with routine service (see above). HAYNES GUIDE TO TOOLS OF THE TRADE HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer is nowadays used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive parts not far from the object we are trying to hit. MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on boxes containing seats, motorcycle jackets, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. MOLE-GRIPS/ADJUSTABLE WRENCH: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETELENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your garage on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside a brake-drum you're trying to get the bearing race out of. TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older cars and motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 9/16 or 1/2 socket you've been searching for for the last 15 minutes. DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against that freshly painted part you were drying. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans rust off old bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint whorls and hard-earned guitar callouses in about the time it takes you to say, "F...." BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering car to the ground after you have installed your new front disk brake setup, trapping the jack handle firmly under the front wing (fender). EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 2X4: Used for levering a car upward off a hydraulic jack. TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters. PHONE: Tool for calling your neighbour to see if he has another hydraulic floor jack. SNAP-ON GASKET SCRAPER: Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog-doo off your boot. BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool that snaps off in bolt holes and is ten times harder than any known drill bit. TIMING LIGHT: A stroboscopic instrument for illuminating grease buildup. TWO-TON HYDRAULIC ENGINE HOIST: A handy tool for testing the tensile strength of ground straps and brake lines you may have forgotten to disconnect. CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large motor mount prying tool that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end without the handle. BATTERY ELECTROLYTE TESTER: A handy tool for transferring sulfuric acid from a car battery to the inside of your toolbox after determining that your battery is dead as a doornail, just as you thought. AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw. INSPECTION LIGHT: The mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, "the sunshine vitamin," which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate as 105-mm howitzer shells during the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws. AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a fossil-fuel burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty bolts last tightened 30 years ago by someone in Dagenham, and rounds them off. I'm much more critical of the Trade Show Culture and it's [i]cool chops, jamming music[/i] than most people here. I feel there's some laziness on the part of the promoters who pick the bass players - (who are usually the sponsored sales reps of the gear companies on these occasions, after all). They might as well be wearing suits. Every year we have the same faces; Wooten, Bailey, the two guys in the video we are discussing and all the others... and we end up with [i]groovy chops music[/i] all the time. There's also a more persistent and wider problem with how the cultural role of the instrument is perceived. [i]Groovy chops, Jazzy, jamming music[/i] is seen as an area where the bassist can extend their technique and show their versatility and virtuosity to the full. Other genres do not invite the same attention (Punk, alternative rock, experimental music etc) despite all having having featured innovative and interesting players at some time or other. Yet players from these genres do not get invited to perform at these shows very often. I'm not suggesting a conspiracy - just laziness on behalf of the promoters and researchers. Why not try something different? The band in this recent thread [url="http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=94341"]http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=94341[/url] would suit the bill for a start. They have a dazzling virtuoso bassist but their influences are more diverse than usual. They have listened from elsewhere to get their inspiration. I like to see music changing and people trying new hybrid forms and using influences from other genres - not the same thing every year.
