If you don’t already know the song, XTCs ‘the mayor of simpleton’ is a fantastic example of a melodic bass line. colin moulding was/is a master at coming up with quirky, very unusual and unique ideas I’d say. 😎

Absolutely correct in my opinion too. Think the last musician basses were nicknamed the ‘bean bass’ regarding the body shape .The latter ones, as mine have much more slimmer/shallow necks I believe? Wonderful instruments indeed. Enjoy!

Oops, sorry think I’m getting the hang of this picture lark now 🤣x

I got my mc924 in 1985 from a little shop called tiger music , Sydney st Brighton.I fell in love with it after playing it in there but was genuinely 50 quid short of the asking price £450. I was absolutely gutted and I think the bloke took pity on me as I left the shop with a hang dog expression with my mate and trudged off down the street.we’d gone about 50 yds down the street and he came out the door and shouted at me that i could have it. Never run so fast in my life back there and kept thanking him so much, guess my face must’ve said it all !Still have her to this day, very well used with various scars but oh what a bloody gorgeous thing, beautiful shallow neck and like someone else said, on the back pup with a bit of top rolled off THAT sound, very Wal ish, thick, punchy smooth. wonderful basses.I have actually tried various Arias from the same era, but I know where my money would go. Good luck in your quest anyway. Best regards, jeff

A Tale of International Shipping

Blimey what a nightmare but glad it came good in the end. I put my Stanley Clarke deluxe up for sale on the alembic FB page early last year, I stipulated U.K. only sale but a guy from Corsica wanted it so badly I relented and agreed. He asked me to send it fedex express which I did. First and only time I’ve ever done it and boy was I nervous but it was delivered ahead of schedule in 2.5 days undamaged. What a relief that was, and reading this guess I was very lucky but not sure I’d do it again after hearing this 🙁 -

£700 is an awful lot for a thunder II A in my humble opinion x

There’s an Ibanez musician for £700 on bass players U.K. market place, the seller’s probably on here aswell I’d have thought. If you want Japanese 80’s quality get that if it’s still available, streets ahead of a westone and most Arias. Just a thought best of luck x

I’ve really got into Sterlings recently (USA ones) fantastic compact basses with wonderful necks.cut through the mix more than stingrays too I reckon. Enjoy your new bass, certainly am with mine 🤘

I always wanted a ric as my bass playing hero (Geddy) was playing one at the time, then I went to the music fair (Earl’s Court) I think and all my illusions were shattered when i finally got to sit down and try to play one.Absolutely alien ergonomics , for me anyway! I was hugely disappointed that it wasn’t right for me, but you can’t deny there’s nothing quite like them look wise, and even non musicians still’ notice’ them.Hats off to the people that can play them and make them sound good! I agree that to me, Geddys Wal sounds weren’t what I would call’ the typical sound’ associated with the brand, but hey ho it shows how versatile they are I guess.I’ve heard it said that Wals are no good for slapping, but totally disagree on that one. Id really like to try the newer rics, they certainly look as though they would be more comfortable and yet still retain some of the iconic look about them.would be interested to hear any thoughts from owners of these?

Maybe I’m old fashioned, I don’t know but I find them all so bland, still think the musician and the roadster series’s with the 2x2 headstock’s were beautifully styled, amazing build quality and most importantly sounded and still sound brilliant to this day.I’m sure there would be a market for a re issue of some sort. The modern range is almost too much imo

Personally I find being passive is in no way a disadvantage on a Wal. i have the same model as above and an early pro II. They have’ that sound’ in spades and are the ones I tend to gravitate towards. I really hope you enjoy your new acquisition , good on ya ! x

Basses better investment than banks!

Thanks for an interesting thread, I’d say anyone who is lucky enough to own a Wal bass that was brought anywhere from years ago up until fairly recently are sitting on probably one of the best investments bass wise.Guess people can never know how much something will rise in value until later.Hindsight is a wonderful thing!! I generally try to only buy a bass that I THINK will go up in value ,because as someone pointed out it’s a privilege and pleasure to play and enjoy being the temporary custodians first and foremost.Anything else is a bonus isn’t it? certainly wish I’d never have sold my first house and had taken the risk to try to invest more in property.🤣x
