Been eyeing up the Nordstrand NJ5 pickups. I lean more towards single coil sounds than hum cancellers but I do enjoy both to be fair.

Currently using the Super Slinkys on my Fender 5 string and like them very much.

Thanks for posting this. It's making me consider swapping the stock Fender noise cancelling pickups for single coils as I like the rawness and less compressed sound.

I took mine to a rehearsal today and it was being a bit stubborn with regards to cutting through.Yet again I'm thinking of a Stingray even though I never keep them when I have one.

Jazz is just a marketing term as the company also make strings for upright basses.

I mentioned artistic freedom and reworking with reference to projects that are avoiding playing songs as was originally composed on purpose. That is separate and apart from projects that look to nail an original note for note. I'm not suggesting that hitting a wrong note accidentally should be passed off as an interpretation,by all means it should be corrected.

Okay. So how does artistic freedom and reworking equate to "playing a load of wrong notes?"

I've never heard this said before about Sadowskys 🤔 Interestingly I've had passive Fender Jazz basses that disappeared into the mix with both pickups on full.

That's my point,no matter who played it an A is an A and it sounded good. Had no idea this cover version even existed before the start of this thread. Otis Redding fan here.

No it means literally that. Some projects avoid exact interpretations and entertain artistic freedom. Reworking isn't the same as "can't be bothered"

I'm not disagreeing with any of this (apart from maybe what the audience notices) but there's also a ton of enjoyment to be had reworking basslines (entire songs even) and putting an individual stamp on it and making it your own.

At no point did you come off as being judgemental. I thought this thread was a good exercise in highlighting what we play and think we hear vs what is actually being played. Something every musician can relate to ☺️

I have to say you've made some excellent points here. I will dare to suggest that in some cases our own interpretations can surpass the original depending on who's ears are receiving it. I've heard too many cover versions that I prefer over the original. On the topic of this thread a semitone is really not going to "break" anything even though I understand the principle of the conversation.

A semitone won't alter the moon's orbit but I thought it was an interesting observation nonetheless 🤭 I definitely prefer the A over the G#.

I've never heard this cover of the Otis Redding classic before but you are indeed hearing a G# not an A as you suspected and weirdly enough it sounds "off" to me. Much prefer the A. As has been mentioned it could be that this version has strayed from the original somewhat. IF the piece is in b minor then the G# is outside the key and explains why it sounds off to my ear.
