I'll be visiting Guitarguitar to try a Charvel and a couple of Sadowsky Metro Expresses on Saturday.

The Noob get his first amp! Markbass content.
BillyBass replied to ossyrocks's topic in Amps and Cabs
Congrats. I have a MarkBass head but I put it through Barefaced cabs. I find it suits brighter basses and have to bump the treble up for my precision. The MarkBass cab might make a difference though. -
I've just watched 4 reviews of the M7. Looks like a great alternative. Its modern, I prefer more traditional stuff, Fender and others but this has given me food for thought.

Who needs pornhub?

Ok, fair enough but perhaps keep it longer. A big part of this purchase is Gas, which doesn't follow reason. The heart wants what it wants, especially after @Ricky Rioliposts pictures like the one above

The Charvel has a few plus points apart from the looks. 1) Di Marzio noiseless pups. I have put Di Marzio Ultra Jazz noiseless pups in my Fender Player Jazz and love them, with the Charvel they come stock! 2) They aren't heavy (anecdotally), unlike so many fivers. I can handle 4.5 KG over my shoulder for a 3 hour rehearsal but that's as heavy as I would want to go 3) Luminlay side dots as stock I keep the tone at 100% on the 4 passive basses that I use regularly so if I left this in passive with no tone control, that would suit me. The pre amp is a bonus and some reviewers hate it, Low end lobster, for example, others have liked it. If I buy one I can always swap it out for something else. Internet research is useful but you can't beat putting a bass over your shoulder and trying it out though. I'd like to compare the Charvel with a few others.

My plan is to buy and not sell it on, so spend a bit more and get a keeper. Yes, I know, famous last words.

I know more about what I don't like than what I like. I like both P and J necks, I like the space on a P fretboard but I also like the smaller easier to navigate J neck. I'm not keen on overly tight string spacing but this is something I can get used to. The only bass neck I've tried that I really didn't like was a U.S. Sterling I borrowed from a mate; thin nut and string spacing but fat out back, like a baseball bat cut in half (not sure which letter of the alphabet that is), and a G string that fell off the fretboard if I was slightly sloppy with my playing.

Basses for me are a bit like the opposite sex, I fancy some, others aren't my type. I've just watched a review of the V7 version 2, though the reviewer was very impressed, he pointed out a couple of things that I wouldn't like: neck dive and a bit of a subdued J pup. On the other hand, the Red Charvel JJ V with gold hardware and cream pups wouldn't look out of place in a tart's boudoir. I love the look but have yet to try one out.
-
On the other hand, if I am to be violently separated from my manly parts, I might as well go the whole hog. I'm trying to flog a couple of 4 strings to act as a makeweight, I'm hoping this will appease her majesty.

looking at their website, most of their 5 string basses are either out of my price range or Ibanez stuff, which I'm not keen on. The only bass they seem to have that I would consider is a Player series Fender Jazz V. I already have a player series 4 string so it doesn't get the Gas going like a completely new bass would and the Charvel is supposed to be a bit like a player series on steroids, i.e. better pups, hardware and its active. So the Charvel is looking attractive. Sire is one of those brands that I really never Gas after. Perhaps if I had one over my shoulder I would change my mind.

I was told this by someone else the last time I was tempted to buy a 5 string. He said I should not touch a 4 string for a month after getting the fiver. I'm thinking about doing this now as I will be stuck indoors for the best part of 2 weeks and as the band I'm in aren't learning any new songs until our old singer returns in March, I want something else to learn.
-
Those big yellow trannies weigh a ton. They are also 110V not 120V though that might not be a problem, I'm guessing American kit is designed to accept a fluctuating voltage and that 110V would be fine.

I've been putting off buying a 5 string for a while now. Every time we learn a new song in some form of drop tuning I consider it again. From Monday I'm going to be stuck indoors for two weeks while wifey is away in Turkey and a conservatory is being built on the back of our house. So I thought this would be a great time to buy a 5 string and knuckle down and learn how to play it, and I've also got 2 weeks to think of an excuse as to why I have just bought another new bass. I don't want to spend more than £800 unless there is a good reason. So, I'm thinking of perhaps the Charvel Pro-Mod San-Dimas JJ V, or a Sadowsky Metro express JJ or PJ V, all of which are in stock in Guitarguitar in Camden. Bassdirect has a great range of fivers in stock but that's a fair drive from North London, so I would only consider it if their stock was much better (the MTD stuff looks interesting though). Any advice would be appreciated.

Kiloton Tribute acquired a couple of weeks ago; alongside its matching rig.
-
Thats bad news. By all accounts their compressors are very good.

The Marcus Miller Markbass amps have EQ points at 1.4KHz and 3.8 Khz and dialling them to 3pm does really remove the blanket. Mr Miller, presumably, came to the same conclusion as you and asked Markbass to alter the amps accordingly.

Scott's Bass Lessons technique accelerator

My main peeve about pedals is how much I have spent on them.

You would also have to check which tonefabrics the hats were made of. I reckon wool with a P Bass would not be a good match.

Scott's Bass Lessons technique accelerator
BillyBass replied to nekomatic's topic in Theory and Technique
@wintoidOne of the mods got back to me. They have the 'Fretboard Accelerator' course starting soon but no Technique Accelerator course is planned for Q1. Beyond that they haven't got any plans. -
They still have a couple of the older brown ones in stock but it's mainly the new CAR finish. G&L do a black Tribute too with a rosewood fingerboard and inlays but no one seems to have them over here yet. I suppose if there were more finish options the price would rise.
-
They do, and they sound great too. Andertons were flogging them for £379 but they have just put the price up to £499. Guitarguitar still sell them for £399 though.
-
Fantastic artwork, shame they aren't bass specific.

So, half the price of cheapest new Stingray! And it's made in Germany I presume, not in Cortek's factory in Indonesia. Considering how everything is going up in price, that's not bad really.
