1. It could well be one of those shine basses that seem to go down a treat on ebay. As you can see, many of the identifying markers are the same, such as the headstock shape and the fretboard. I seem to remember the nut being of a similar crudeness from when i actually owned the thing.
2. I would personally go for the 4th mic, put 2 overhead mixed left and right then have the other 2 for the kick+snare. If your cymbals aren't too loud then just having the overheads and kick is an option (it's known as triangle micing) but i find that the snare can get lost there somewhere otherwise the cymbals are too loud.
3. I really like this bass, the woodgrain is sooo nice.
4. you could get one of those things you stick on the headstock, or if you don't do any vocals just hold it between your teeth!
5.
1987 at Club Isla, Pacha, Valencia - the only live photo I could find. After we get back from tour I'll post what we look like 22 years later!
That's quite amazing, you have a keyboard AND a bass player?
6. When your bridge pickup is shaped so it goes up in the middle, you know you're onto a winner!
7. Wow some interesting stories on here, it's amazing to think you lot grew up in the 60s, i can only just remember 1995 when i was still 4 years old!
8. Hey as people say you're only as old as you feel. You do what you want. Good setlist there, looks like you've pretty much got all the rock classics covered. Maybe you could do 1 or 2 noughties songs just for good measure but that's just me really.
9.
Thats a good point and I was thinking about it yesterday myself. If I wanted to minimise the depreciation on any future automotive purchase I might make then going classic might be a good route in the future. However, not at the expense of modern comforts or reliability. Hmmmmmmm... ...a desirable marque from early 90's might be good value next time I'm looking to buy, maybe.
Great idea. Some cars from the 70's and 80's are quickly becoming classics such as the Mercedies X00SL convertibles. It's really all about looking at what cars will become classics in the future. Some cars you can't go wrong with, like ferarris and stuff. But others you can't be so sure about. I reckon good cars to look out for are the German makes like VW and Mercedes. I also reckon the early-mid 90s japaneese high performance cars like the subarus and nissan skyline r32-33s have hit rock bottom in value. Some people don't think japaneese cars will ever become desirable classics but they didn't reckon on cars like the nissan figaro which has selling prices today of around £10-15 thousand. Not bad for a 17-18 year old car. If you've got a good eye and you keep the thing in good nick you might end up with a car worth a bomb in the future.
10. Yeah i think the thing really is that cars depriciate in value because the parts depreciate in condition but i think more than that it's also because the cars depriciate in style as well. If you think about it a fender jazz bass is just as desirable now as it was in the 60's, 70's 80's and 90's and you can bet your ass it'll be still as desirable aestetically in the 2010's and beyond. Most cars go in and out of style, most basses don't. Also what is quite interesting is that most of the cost of a car is actually the R&D on designing it (it's what hopefully will be paying my wages in the future!) and implementing it into production which is why models get cheaper as they become older, even if they're brand new cars. Especially if it's about to be replaced by a newer model. As i said, it's all about the new style.
11. One of my regrets about bass playing is that i didn't just get a 5 in the first place. Also these days most guitar based rock is in some sort of lower deviation from standard E tuning so even for that style a 5 string is very useful. Not to mention all the other sorts of music you can play with the lower string.
12.
I share your concerns. I was saying to one of my guitarists on sunday eve how us UK (and beyond) bass players have this forum, and as far as I'm aware, other musos don't have anything of anywhere near the same standard, with such a great sense of community and cameraderie. I hope these two qualities survive the transition. I don't know of anywhere else on the web that has such soul.
You've probably not been on drummerworld then. This is a real shame, yeah i think we really have too many threads on here where the arguing just gets out of hand. It's a shame it has to be like this but there y'go.
13. I had a shine bass and it was fine, sounded okay and played fine too. Not amazing or anything but it's a cheap bass, it does what is says. That was a 5 string but don't expect to see a high return on it as they're pretty cheap to begin with.
14. Haha my mate's band is called "Measure of Disorder" which is basically what entropy is.
15. It's difficult to tell whether you're hitting the rails or not on the recording because the myspace player does add a bit of distortion itself but yeah i think you let it get a bit distorted in places. When you actually record the channel onto the computer you don't need to make it so it maxes out on 0, try to make it max a little lower because usually you can just up the gain in the recording software. Then of course there's the software itself. Before mixing it's a good idea to turn all the tracks down by say 3db because this way you can mix stuff up without it exceeding the master gain. Then you can mix it up when you do the mastering. I thought the recording was okay, obviously if you wanted a bit more control of the sound it would have been an idea to record them seperately but since it's just a test i'll let you off.
16. There is a for sale forum you know? And yeah it would be worth looking at Euro basses if the exchange rate wasn't so bad. It's not all bad though, i managed to flog a guitar to some bloke in france for quite a good price because of the €xhange rate.
17.
...and the VAT! Isn't the rough rule of thumb for Import Duty & VAT to add 22% onto the item & shipping total? JTB edit: Like your Fender Jazz Special by the way, very Duff McKagan!
I think it's 19% due to the VAT cut.
18. I don't even know why we have this argument between warwick and amlebic, why not just have both!?
19.
Actually I was just referring to my lack of ability!
Fine enough, but you might as well give them a good tune up anyway, just to make sure
20.
I think that my drumkit must be faulty because they don't sound anything like as good when I play them!
Perhaps they're not tuned very well. I'd put up a video of me drumming but i'd rather not embarass myself.
21.
The hair band isn't to mute the strings when playing in a "normal" way. It's for using when tapping and is to mute the vibration of the top part of the string. When you tap, both the string on both sides of the fret vibrates, and this generates two notes – one of which isn't the note you want. Having something soft around the top of the string is enough to dampen the vibrations of that side of the string and eliminate the second note.
But really that shouldn't matter because that top vibration isn't picked up by the pickups anyway.
22.
niiiiice! I really love the lakland and the 8-string! My experience with 8-stringed basses is limited to watching pictures like these so can you tell anything about the playability (is that even a word?), and how do you amplify it? (without the sound getting muddy)
Funnily enough, yes it is a word.
23. Hey you should post some clips, if i can't tell the difference then i seriously doubt anyone else would be able to
