1. METAL!!!!!!! Nothing like blasting out a riff on the low C string of my bass, in fact my bass goes down to G! You don't get much more metal then that! (well okay maybe a bit but still )
 2.
Don't feel bad about it. Talking whilst playing is MASSIVELY more difficult than singing and playing. Don't know why this should be the case, but it is. I can sing and play quite well, but talk? Nah.
It's because talking is not rhythmically linked with actually playing the bass. I can talk a bit if i'm playing something really simple.
 3.
whatever you think of Sting, the verse of this song is an impressive bit of vocal & bass coordination- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnnUDGLnUzE
I think sting has to be one of the masters of singing and playing bass at the same time. I can do it, really it takes practice. Ever since i started playing the guitar in 2004 i've always fancied myself as a bit of a frontman so I've always tried to learn the singing and guitar at the same time. It was a natural progression from playing guitar and singing to bass and singing although sometimes it does feel a bit weird that there's nothing making any sound between the bass and singing. Really, the way to go about it is to learn the bassline without singing, then when you're feeling confident and that you can play it without much effort at all (you could just use a song you already know how to play without much effort) then try adding the vocals. If you get to a bit which you're stuck with, slow it down and try and find out how the 2 parts fit in rhythmically. You will find that even the vocal parts that seem most disconnected from the guitar/bass parts actually go together in a much more rhythmically simple manner than you first thought.
 4.
You won't be disapointed
I HATE NOT BEING RICH! I guess i'll just have to become a rockstar eh? I know Jay James uses Mesa boogie bass cabs but i was thinking of MarkBass since they're a lot lighter! Maybe i could get one of those 400+ tube heads though...
 5.
I play in a band called Within The Void www.withinthevoid.com featuring Pin (ex-Sikth) Jamie Hunt (Ex-Biomechanical), myself and drummer Thomas Lang. We are currently looking for a world class singer to complete the line up! There are no choons on the website yet, but add yourself to our myspace to get updates!
I first read this post and thought, Thomas Lang, yeah and my band has Neil Peart as a drummer! Then i realised you actually DO have Thomas Lang as a drummer!!! That's amazing. My band, Her Fatal Legacy. We're not really doing very well at the moment due to recruitment issues, check out the pic in my sig. Hey dood maybe it'd be an idea to make this into a sticky?
 6.
B definitely, i hate singlecuts, C is a bit strange... B is cool though, reminds me of a peavey cirrus or something
+1, yeah basically like a cirrus but then angled like a jazz bass only moreso (forget what it's called but you know what i mean right?) It's just a very classy and sexy shape i think.
 7. It looks a bit like an ESP eclipse bass, it'll probably look brilliant in blue.
 8.
Nice JTB, VERY nice! I know I can talk but, that 2*15 looks like it is the heaviest thing since heavy things were invented! I bet it sounded awesome though. Edward, the Probot album is superb isn't it?!
It's pretty good stuff, Red War is brilliant that DG can actually play the kick that fast without actually using a double bass drum pedal! Apparently he used a 28" as well on the album. These mesa boogie amps are SOO annoying they make me want to get one!
 9.
Oh yes mate Samba's alllllll the way
Speakin of trainers, you might not have noticed but when you took that band pic i think a chav just happened to be walking past and accidentaly got himself in the pic. 2nd on the left.
 10.
Not necessarily. Mark E Smith is the coolest singer (granted, 'singer' might not be exactly the right word...'frontman' then) I've ever seen and he usually wastes few words between songs. Singers that prattle on spouting their opinions on politics and the environment while the bass player looks embarassed are the worst. And if I want someone to ask me if I'm feeling allright I'll go and see my GP.
Okay well it's not just what you say in between songs it's also about how you behave whilst playing the songs, you want to get the crowd going, not just let them stand there.
 11.
interesting reading this, our genre is slightly different but the same rules apply. we dont have an image and generally our onstage persona is just not there. but how do you take that step from being onstage playing to being a bit more of a show? i dont mean the full on running round the stage like lunatics just more interesting to watch
Try and interact with your audience more. Nothing is more boring a singer who only actually talks to announce the next song name and maybe says "thanks guys" at the end of the show. After all, the interaction is why people have come to see a band live, if they just wanted to hear a bunch of songs being played they'd have stayed at home and listened to their ipods. Also when you play don't just look like statues standing there, no need to go absolutely mental but interact with the other guys in your band and just generally try to look like you're not concentrating too hard and you're just enjoying the music. If you ARE concentrating too hard, then PRACTICE!
 12. http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/bass_guitars.asp http://www.scayles.co.uk/bassguitars.html http://www.qype.co.uk/place/135736-Stringe...burgh-Edinburgh Google is a wonderful thing I remember years back when i was 14 we visited Edinburgh and there was some pretty good music shop on a really random backstreet in one of the leafy victorian suburbs. No idea what it was called but i still use the cable i bought there!
 13.
Arch Enemy use (actually) C Tuning. So do In Flames for some songs, and Drop A#, their other tuning, is easily achieved from there.
That's quite interesting because we've been playing Clouds Connected in Drop C. Most of the tabs for that song are in drop C as well. I can see how it would be used though. Also if im not mistaken does the bass player use a 5 string bass in drop C with a low G or something? I've been doing this recently.
 14. You're pretty much right. I could plug a £100 bass into a £250 bass amp and you would have to be a bass player to, from hearing alone, be any the wiser- especially if it was a recording of a band. The thing is that playability is really the key in basses. Every bass feels different and maybe you haven't played a lot of basses but the differences between any number of expensive basses are by no means small. You might think the differences in feel and sound are small right now but go and have a play on a load of different basses and you'll see that they are not. But yes, it's all to do with the player's taste.
 15.
Hey guys thanks for your replies! Going to use these points on our next band meeting and do a little brain storming. Did any band ever used prison uniform? (you know black and white strips, boots... ) I could even have one of these big old round weights around my leg, good excuse not having to jump around!

That's been done. I remember Henry Rollins doin' it on the Jools Holland show few years back
Not to mention the old slipknot style, which is more of a modern orange jump suit style than the classic stripy uniform like your idea. There's also the option of the suits with the arrows on them. And yeah i agree with the fact that too many bands seem to angle too much towards having a gimmick. I remember i saw a band at the ringside and all the band members apart from the singer had knitted bobble hats with earmuff things on. They just looked silly and the songs were pretty terrible. Not to mention the band didn't even try to interact with us lot, just tell us the song name and play making them pretty boring to watch, too. Really it's better to concentrate on playing and the image will come to you. Like the band name, they're very often not pre planned and they come about from a random event or idea some time.
 16.
Picking it up tomorrow all being well. Had a chat to the seller and he's sold it to go towards a custom made bass.. by a luthier who's name I've forgotten. Anyway I asked him about the nut width and he reckons it's 40mm so that sounds reasonably slim for a P bass, is that a "B" width neck? I explained to my better half that with the interest rates so low that and savings in the banks etc are just not making any useful growth, so I should put some funds into a classic instrument that will gain in price. She fixed me that look... well, I convinced myself anyway!! Thanks for the comments too
Yeah, keep it in good nick like it is now and it'll only go up in value!
 17. hi there i decided to line up the 2 bodies to see if they were the same size and shape, i assume the pictures are the same scale as i scaled the picture so that the fret sizes were the same (the reason they appear different is because the SR5 has 22 frets and the SR4 has 21). As you can see, there are several points where the pictures don't match, i inverted the colours of the SR4 to make the differences a bit more obvious. And yeah i was going to suggest a SUB as well. That's actually the reason i was PUT OFF buying a sub 5.
 18.
Thanks mate, but I've just bought this one as the basis for a project I've had in mind for a while now. I converted to five strings a long time ago, and always fancied a five string stingray but have never liked the larger scratchplate or the big chamfers. Plan is to build a body like the four string in a see-through black stain, no scratchplate or control plate, hence the question about body sizes.
Well does it matter what size the 5 body is if you're just going to be building a 4 style body for it anyway?
 19. Mine is very simple. 20w Thomann in house special 2005 No Bass amp, i just played through my guitar amp quietly of course 2005-2006 Peavey Basic 112 2006-2007 1986 SWR SS180+Goliath 1 2007-
 20. Nice work, but you need a guitar cab
 21. Beautiful. A 5 string jazz type bass is definetly one of my wish-list items.
 22. There are a lot of songs in DROP C (CGCF) But not too many in that sort of tuning i don't think.
 23.
Played there a couple of years ago, and a Nissan Micra had done just that. Five Band members, two roadies, and a couple of passers-by (who thought it was a great laugh) and the Micra was parked sideways in the middle of the road. That's one idiot who'll think twice before doing it again.
I remember some guy with a knob for a head parked his car right behind someone so they couldn't get out and he was on a double yellow line blocking the alleyway right next to our house. I guess Jeremy Clarkson is right about cocks starting to drive audis. As for the gig i haven't done a gig in a while! The problem is i can't find any band members, our band really needs 2 guitar players a bass player and a drummer for the music that we're doing (maybe someone on keyboards as well). However we only have 3 people at the moment and i think the bass player is on her way out (never comes to any practices) so that leaves me and the guitar player. I really don't know if we'll ever get to the point of being a full band, we just can't seem to find the people for it.
 24. This is great dude, i'm probably gonna have a go at making my own recording studio one day, only with REAL drums
 25.
Sounds like it's just a bad solder joint, at worst a bad pot. I'm sure the dealer will be happy to sort it out for you.
That's probably true. Get them to repair it and demand that they don't charge you. I remember i got a guitar fixed at my local guitar shop, it wasn't even my consumer rights or anything but it was such a quick electronics job they fixed it for free.
