******I guess that's why they're probably STILL the most sought after bass of all time..Oh by the way,My 20 fret Fenders have only a 3 Octave range!! [almost]
what i meant is that you can't play 4 octaves of the note E on a 20 fret bass, maybe it doesn't bother you but it bothered a lot of other people, that's why almost all new basses have at least 21 frets! And people aren't attracted to vintage fenders because they have 20 frets. That's like me saying "oh yes let's buy this old car for 5x the price of a new BMW PURLEY for the reason that it has a 3 speed gearbox so you'll never get it to 70mph!" They are attracted to it because they are rare and collectable items. I really doubt they'd be less popular today had they had more frets. Anyway why the f*** are you getting so pissed off? i never said they were bad basses, i just said that imo there were a few obvious oversights made when this bass was first built.
 2. ^yeah what i find quite weird is the fact that everybody seems to think the shure sm57 an amazing guitar mic but not really that good with bass. I find the opposite is true. I don't really think it's that good for guitar, it all sounds a bit mushy (maybe that's just my crappy recording technique) but on the bass it's pretty decent.
 3.
Thanks ped! You're a POD man too, if I remember correctly... The floating thumb it's a recent addition to my arsenal. I've come from being a pick player to fingerstyle quite recently. Here's a transitional video of me a year ago, anchored thumb and pick-like technique with the fingers! An arrangement of Mogwai's Tracy:
wow that sounded loads like a recording i did ages ago with my bass! I'll have a look see if i can dig it up... here it is. Dunno. I thought so any way. I used a real bass amp and a real mic btw
 4. i don't think i'll ever be pleased with just one bass. And i don't really have all that much to spend on basses either so i think it will be a long time before i find my "one" any way.
 5.
Now, money or no money, I believe this is a more valid opinion than that of anyone who would actually play the 21st fret on a bass guitar.
what so just because somebody plays the 21st fret of a bass it makes their opinion invalid? Who let you in the room? I use the fret quite a lot infact i would like a 24 fret bass since the one i have now doesn't have enough.
 6.
Howard Moon plays bass?!
erm.... yeah. Not just that either, he's a talented multi-instrumentalist!
 7.
wow, where are these gigs and can my band play them?? we have the exact opposite problem at gigs.
that sucks too. They should be about the same imo.
 8.
And at the end of the day, don't you think that rock is treally a subdivision of jazz, in that most tunes are based on a menu of well-tried chord sequences and what is a guitar solo if it isn't improvisation - which is what jazz is?
i've already said this before. If we want to go down this route, you'll just end up at the point of saying all of today's music is just based off monks singing 1100 years ago.
 9.
parametric EQ thingy (looks like two very big graphic Eqs ususally in one one unit box)
no i think something that looks like 2 very big graphic EQs in one box is 2x32 band stereo graphic EQ. A parametric EQ is much more compact because it's based on the idea that you choose what frequency you want instead of just having a huge number of sliders for various fixed frequencies. So you don't need to adjust it as much.
One other system to try putting into use (for me anyway) is to get an extra speaker or 2 and use ONLY for vocals and also using vocals on the other speakers. This theoretically should add much more clarity.
that's one thing that proper annoys me about a lot of gigs is the vocals are loads louder then the instruments and it takes a lot away from the song imo.
 10.
Room dimension make a huge difference and different people responses will always be different but ill try this out of my own choices. Please dont flame me, discussion of it is fine Boost bass at = difficult due to preference in sound.. personally i love the mids. Cut around 200-400Hz to relieve the mix of muddyness Boost guitar at = around 1khzz-3khz (if you have 2 boost the other around 700-900hz) sperate the mix Boost vox= slightly somewhere around 500 hz to add bottom (experiment with diff singers) then 1-3khz for definition. Cut the highs. Try a 4:1 compression ratio with a soft knee Keys: Flat EQ or possibly cut bass as theyre designed to sound that way already Oh and if the kickdrums mic'd make sure to remove 200-400hz imo Wot ne of u guys think?
re the guitars, what if you mix it so one guitar is in the left and the other is in the right speaker? is it still best to boost different frequencies?
 11. well to be fair i don't think it's just the bass, this band played a gig in my school and the singer sang a semitone flat all night, the crowd still seemed to like them.
 12.
A crap band with good gear will always sound crap and a good band with crap gear will always sound good- My Dad always told me that
and a good band with good gear? amazing.
 13.
I don't suppose Leo thought that bass playing was going to spiral out of control Leo got it right, just my opinion
fair enough. But he put 21 frets on his guitars so why not his basses as what i'm thinking really.
 14.
I can't work out whether or not this post is a p*sstake.. Yeah - he was obviously pretty clueless that Leo Fender...
never said he was clueless, he'd have been dead a long time before 1991 if he was and tried to do what he did! i'm just saying he didn't really know all of a bassist's needs when he made the first electric bass guitars.
 15.
Excuse me for being a numpty, but what's the point of a thumb rest below the strings??
it's not you that's the numpty, as great as leo fender was, he wasn't really aware of a bassist's needs in the early days, the reason the first fender basses have 20 frets (which means you have just below a 4 octave range in standard tuning, pretty silly) is that he thought they didn't need much range because it was supposed to be a "bass." He also assumed that people played with their thumbs rather than the fingers, so early models had the so called "thumb rest" the wrong way round.
 16.
4756 strings at roughly £18 a pk shall we say? 4756 / 4 (for guess work here) 1189 (duh = number of basses) 1189 x £18 = £21402... and thats once every how often?!
one thing is that not everyone replaces their strings at the same time, i'm personally not going to till one of them breaks- they're just so expensive and i've got a lot of other things to spend my money on, my bass sounds ok as it is any way.
 17. In terms of being able to play as with any good band, it's not about what you can play really, just how well you can do it, i'd rather see somebody play a FOB song really well on the bass then see somebody screw up a jaco song or something like that.
 18. ^if the average number of strings is about 4.2 let's say then that's over 5000 strings!
 19.
I prefer my women with deep voices..... ....and big hands.
WHAT!!??? I's NAACE!!!
 20.
+100 That's way over what anyone should be paying! Andy Viccars for example charges from £30 for a headtock repair & his work is as good as it gets.
well it might have been $400 actually. Something like that.
 21. ok but you might want to delete your other 2 posts of exactly the same thing
 22.
Yeah and he was Donnie the wild boy in the kids cartoon series called The Wild Thornburys too.
haha that's brilliant!
 23.
Sorry but in IMHO - it's not as easy as that to fix - when it's done properly it often requires metal pins being added to support the break because of the stress caused by string tension. I've seen repairs look great until the first time the strings are put back on & it's tuned up...then it all comes apart again. Especially with Gibsons which are infamous for having weak headstocks. It's really not a job for an amateur & a pro repair will only cost around £150 - & like you say can be made to look 'invisible'.
oh well a few months back someone had a headstock break on an SG and they were quoted £400. Luckily it was covered in their home insurance.
 24.
that would be an awesome help!!!! seriously man if enough of us are aware these guys wont stand a chance!!! check out the new list at the start of the post!! some items have been found!!!
you say the stuff was found in a case, was all of the stuff in cases?
 25.
to look on the bright side at least you have some of the guitar, also i saw a really good guide on how to repair a totaly munted headstock on the internet one time but can'te remember where, aslong as the neck area isn't broken it will probably be fixable unless there are bits missing?
yep as long as the rest of the neck is in tact and you have all of the pieces you can glue the headstock back onto the neck, you might be able to do it yourself with some wood glue, sandpaper and finishing stuff. However if you get a pro to do it it might be expensive but they can make it look as if it had never come off.
