I'm a great believer in getting the sound right at the source, and sometimes the only way to do it is with £5,000 worth of microphones, but if you don't have access to that kind of stuff, there are a wide variety of software that can help you get pretty damn close, if you know what you're doing and what you're trying to achieve. I guess it depends what you use and what you want to get from it... I have an Ampeg plug-in that I DI my bass into, I can choose the Amp & Cabinet and how its miked and with what mic. If I want an Ampeg in a studio sort of sound I have a wide choice of useable rigs right there. Of course if I'm trying to get the sound of a Trace Elliott in a railway station with a ribbon mic this plug in would be of absolutely no use at all.
My point was that although you can get some perfectly good tones out of modelling software, I could never find something that quite matched up to what I wanted. Then I decided to do an actual recording of my bass amp and I thought it sounded a lot more like how I wanted it to.
To get back to the OP though, rather than spunking a load of cash on expensive mics, it may be that you can get a lot closer to what you want using some (much cheaper) modelling technology than you can with £150 worth of mic... It may also be the case that a simple SM57 and DI blended will do the trick. If you're on a budget and you don't have a properly acoustically treated room and the correct equipment to capture it then modelling might be the way to go
Having said that, I would tend to agree with this. You have to do quite a bit of tweaking to get it sounding how you want it, but you can get some pretty good tones out of it, without the expense of buying microphones.
With all the modelling technology these days you probably don't need all that gear if you know what you're doing I got amp modellers, mic modellers and acoustic space modellers all on my laptop!
The issue with amp modelling I think is not so much you can't get a credible sound out of it, but the fact that it's not really your sound. I prefered the sound I was getting from using a real bass amp to be honest.
 3.
depends on if the neck is strong enough and the truss rod can be set accordingly. consult your tech.
That is what the truss rod is there for. I can't imagine most basses would have a problem with this sort of thing. I certainly never have.
 4.
Would you think that stringing one of my bass with thicker gauge strings and tuning BEAD would make any sense?
Possibly. I can't imagine that in that type of band you would be using the high string all that much anyway. Maybe string it up and see how it goes? The worst that can happen is that everyone will laugh at you and call you an idiot
 5. I quite like the AKG D550 for recording bass but if you wanted to get the highs in there as well you would need another microphone, or maybe the DI would do it. I recently did some recordings with the D550, a condenser mic aimed at one of the tweeters and the DI, sounded pretty good.
 6. I hate that song. If I do a cover version I would do it in the style of something completely different.
 7.
Unfortunately putting this idea on hold as we are moving away from my hometown to Newcastle asap. This was meant to happen in June/July, but I've had enough of my current job/house/town.
I know the feeling mate. No point in festering somewhere you don't want to be any longer than you have to.
 8. Acoustics is one option but it's not always to do with that. It might be the way the bass is set up, maybe the string is too high or the pickup is too low on that side?
 9. Wow, there are plenty of very well known originals bands who don't charge that much. Can't say I would consider paying that much for a covers band, myself.
 10.
I have just had an awful haircut.
Are you a Real supporter? I've had to get my hair cut too, job interview lol.
 11. I must admit there is something about record shops that you don't get with the internet. I'm too young to be rooting around through the LPs but one thing I like to do when I'm visiting london is to go to the music exchange store in Greenwich and search through their £1 CDs. Mostly pop and that but there have been some good finds there. I must have bought about 25 CDs from that place lol.
 12. Hello there. They say that Venice is the Birmingham of the south, you know
 13. Interesting my MarkBass cab has seperate jack and speakon inputs so I presume they must have retained that sort of functionality for the newer ones.
 14.
How funny! Last night I tried my Baja Tele through my LMII and mini 48 cab and loved it. I was going to post a new topic.....but... The tone shaping needed a bit of tweaking, but it gave the Tele some lovely rich tones, great for jazz melodies and funk/soul rhythm playing. Seriously would gig this set up.
I'll give you that, it certainly has that tight bass sound that I can imagine would be quite good for jazz.
 15.
Website is looking great, and the gear list makes me want to cry. Keep up the good work!
Yes, some very nice gear. What I would say though is that the well known turkish cymbal company is generally spelt ZILDJIAN. I know it's pretty hard to read from the logo lol.
 16.
Was Iron Maiden two-fingers? I'd always thought it was three - mindst you, it's horses for courses. Youo've got to play the stuff, so you've got to play it with a technique which is both achievable and sounds right.
I believe it was two fingers and a thumb.
 17. I have not heard of this auto compressor before. Usually edens have a pot that you can pull out to turn the compressor off.

 19. This was my set up for a song I recently recorded. Eden Metro combo+markbass 210 HF. Sontronics condenser aimed at the tweeter for the high end range, AKG D550 for the low end and a DI to record 3 tracks in total for the bass.
 20. Can't say I have, unless one of my mates becomes a celebrity
 21.
Shame the drums in the sketchup floorplan aren't in the same place as in the groovy photo..... Damn thats pedantic, sorry! Nice use of space to keep things clean and well placed. Not too crammed with unnecessary clutter. Do you have a google ads type campaign planned? If so whats the landing page like? How is the page optimised to grab search engines (ask your tech dude to explain this, if he cant he needs to to ensure you come out on top). Coded in xhtml (good stuff!) using jquery (for the image transitions I'd guess) and javascript precached images. Ticks an awful lot of boxes, and your gear list gives me hot flushes. Nice job!
My sister has an interview today as a "search engine optimiser". Sounds enthralling. Anyway yeah I think the floor plan looks pretty great. I might nick it for my next sims house
 22.
I really like that!
Thanks. I must admit though, at one point whilst I was making this I did actually say to myself "Silddx would be horrified if he saw what I was doing right now!"
 23.
Thanks all. My girlfriend has an iMac which I use (we sold the PC as no need for it with the Mac) as my computer. I'm not sure how much technology and information I need to get this going. The Korg Microsynth could go straight into a bass rig for now, and I think it has MIDI out...if that is what I need to record it on the Mac? Its one of those things...I know its going to lead to even more music gear and its a case of do I have time to learn it and use it.
Any keyboard with a midi output will do really. But it won't have the sounds of the korg on the computer. You would have to record the audio output for that.
 24.
I didn't know LEDs required the polarity to be the right way round (I thought they'd just be like a tungsten)? I did try reversing the polarity on the PSU though & still nothing. I'll have a mess about when I get home (@3:30)
yes they do, hence why they're called "light emitting DIODES".
