1.
Are people into metal these days? I thought it was all progressive dub house or something.
It's not really in the mainstream any more. Mind you, Machine Head played the G-mex centre on tuesday so I suppose some people must still listen to it. All the ads in the music shops in Manchester seem to be for some indie or pop crap though unfortunately. I can't say I've had much luck with music websites, mind you my friend posted one advert and had 4 band offers in one day and he hadn't even been playing as long as me or anything! Suppose it's more about how people perceive you, rather than just about where you are or what site you go on.
 2.
Yet there he is playing his simple root note on stages in front of thousands regularly and you're at home with a more complicated bassline watching a dvd. Perhaps it's not a boring bassline, just the right bassline?
this.
 3. I can't stand that song. But I think you have to sort a lot more than the bassline to improve it.
 4.
You may be confusing the mix engineer and producer with the record company driven mastering engineer. Its nto clear to me (yet) that RR actually pushed that level up or not. Vlado Meller mastered Californication (and Stadium Arcadium), and was probably driven down the uber loud route by various suited f***wits that have no idea what makes a master sound good. Rather amusingly the shot of his studio.. ...shows some of those massive PMC monitors in the background so he must have heard every tiny detail of the damage that was being done....
You're probably right. I suppose it's easy to blame the man who's name is on the CD. It does seem like a big coincidence to me though...
 5. Looks great! It looks like the sort of thing I would do. In fact I did actually try it, once.
 6.
and this is why death magnetic sounds like a large pile of poo.........every single instrument clips and distorts, so there are no dynamics and the album is way too loud compared to the rest of my music collection
+1. What is even WORSE to me is that RR did the same bloody thing with the Californication album! I mean, what kind of nutcase thinks that album would sound fantastic if the volume was ramped up to 12? I know he's got a lot of experience but I think he honestly must have some sort of fulfilment issues where he is unable to be satisfied by any amount of limiting compression in his mixes.
 7.
Not really a bassist then...
Not if you define a bassist as someone who sits around their bedroom all day going widdlydiddlydo at 1 000 000 bpm on their fingers. However, he's made more money than most people on this forum by playing a bass. IMO I think that pretty well qualifies him to put "bassist" under "occupation" on his census form...
 8. I think he's out of McFly, a band that used to be quite famous among teenage and pre-teenage girls back in the early noughties...
 9.
It depends on the gig. If its a jazz gig and there's space for the bass to come out & take that lead position then go ahead & do it. If it's a pop gig, sit back down & do what your there to do. It's all relative to the context in which your playing again. No right or wrong answer.
*you're
 10. I've got to say, the bass is an electric instrument, therefore you could say that the sound is always going to be "processed" somewhat no matter what you do with it. I would also go so far as to say that you can't really not have a sound that is "processed" in some way. Even with an acoustic instrument, there are still concious decisions to be made about the structure and shape as well as the type of strings used on the instrument which will change its sound. I'm not sure what the massive deal with audio processing is in recordings and everything. Recording as I've said a few times is like playing another musical instrument, you've got to analyse the type of band you're recording, what will sound the best? Sometimes, it's best to make the sound as "natural" as possible (of course, your hi-fi speakers reproduce sound differently to the way it is produced in real-life so in order to achieve as "natural" a sound as possible, you still need to use some audio processing). Alternatively, there are some bands which sound great with masses of effects. There isn't really a right and wrong. Of course you're always going to get people who don't like audio processing at all. The reason for this I think is to do with the fast pace at which technology is changing. People feel as if the future is uncertain and would rather look back to the past at a time where everyone was sure of everything (obviously they weren't, but it's easy to think that when you're looking at the past through rose-tinted glasses). I don't mean that in a derrogatory way, since I can understand exactly how it feels.
 11. It's hardly a surprise really- you've got all those soft squidgy bodies wearing fabric clothes. It's like shoving a room full of fabric sofas or something.
 12. One of my friends has to work in the disney store for 16 hours a week, imagine how he must feel lol.
 13.
It was the first one, but with an English commentary. Mush less irritating.
+1. Got to love Tony Hirst, really. The episodes of how it's made that are featured on Quest are generally pretty old, as is most of their programming but worth seeing if you've not done so already and you're interested in that sort of thing.
 14. Yes but at least the NHS doesn't have irritating christmas adverts with the SugaBints on them...
 15. doesn't sound like too much of a problem to me no. Maybe you ought to consider terminating the pickup connectors where the rout is so that you can swap them out easily with just a scratchplate change?
 16. I do come from a quite musical background, although my mum and sister are very good musically and we had some very good musicial people on my dad's side of the family, my dad never picked up on any of it. I'm not massively great musically I must say but I think that's just because I don't really practice enough, or the right things. Personally I don't think "talent" exists. It's all about having an interest in a subject and HARD WORK. It reminds me of one of my friends at uni who is constantly asking me why I get such high marks or why I'm so "clever". I tell him that cleverness has nothing to do with it, it's just that I actually have enough time to work through all the questions we're set and seek guidance when I've not got something right, whereas he has no time to do any of this because he's always at work or with his girlfriend who forced him to move in with him.
 17.
Sorry to be a spoilsport, but I don't believe you. http://www.theregist...ath_by_battery/ although... http://www.darwinawa...win1999-50.html
I can imagine maybe if you had a cut on your tounge it might be nasty. At any rate, you might as well just buy a multimeter (although don't use it like the sailor in that article lol). I ought to get a multimeter. In fact I might ask for one for christmas.
 18.
The brain's memory capaicity is currently estimated at 2.5 petabytes (according to The Scientific American magazine) anyone know how many songs that is???? Edit: About 800 million!
It depends on whether the file format is .mp3, .wav or .wma. Then it depends on how it's coded. I would think that a more realistic measure of the capacity for songs would be in terms of a midi file, since this gives us the building blocks of how to actually play the song. That would give you more than 800 million.
 19.
Ha, ha. Cruel but true! No one's going to play this in C# so all you have to do is play 8 beats (quavers) to the bar over these chords: C | C | Am | Am | F | F | G | G |
I hate this song but i'm so glad I know how to play it now.
 20.
Er... Don't want to get into an argument or anything, but the cranium is the braincase, or skull. cranium [ˈkreɪnɪəm] n pl -niums, -nia [-nɪə]
1. (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Anatomy) the skull of a vertebrate

2. (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Anatomy) the part of the skull that encloses the brain Nontechnical name brainpan [from Medieval Latin crānium skull, from Greek kranion]

what's that sorry?
 21. According to wikipedia, it's about 1.1 to 1.9 litres: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cranial_capacity
 22.
I notice that too - looks like the pickups aren't in the covers properly.
Looks that way to me too. That's why I like having something to put the pickups on rather than just using the springs to keep them up because really those jazz pickups are not held in to their covers any other way.
Do I read this correctly? The guy who built this instrument didn't fit any apparatus for adjusting the height of the pickup? No springs, no silicon tubing, no foam bed? So, if you wanted a super low action, or a super high action, the pickup couldn't be adjusted to suit? If so, then the guy's an idiot. For optimum performance, you have to be able to adjust the height of the pickup. That's electric bass design 101.

FFS That's his gig. Ask if you can have a refund for the cost of doing your own, albeit partial, setup. I would be less than impressed. Very shoddy!
+1. Even I knew to put something underneath the pickups so they were at a reasonable distance to the strings and I'd never even built one before lol.
 23. There probably is an ideal length for the pickup to be from the string but I don't think it's massively important; the pickups create a magnetic field that is disturbed by the strings which in turn produces an electrical current. Basically, the closer the pickup is to the strings then the bigger that disturbance will be and the more volume you'll get out the end of it. At any rate, I think those look a bit far away to me. Try taking them up a bit closer to the strings, you might need to put something underneath for them to sit on which is usually the case with jazz pickups. Otherwise it might be an electronics issue. Even if the battery is good, that might not be the problem.
 24. Check out this guy then lol (contains swearing on the part of an irate audience member) http://ultimateclass...-over-the-edge/
