2.
well the bartolinis i have just now are active and as of late i`ve realised bartolini isn`t the sound im wanting ive heard some clips of the kent armstrongs pups (which are passive) wired without an internal preamp and on their own they sound ridiculously good ill stick up some pics of the bass before i start drilling etc thanks
Well i'm glad you like the sound of them. I think they're quite good (on the guitar) but of course they're not the most expensive of pickups so if i was rich they probably wouldn't be my first choice if you see what i mean.
 3. I agree that if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Having said that if you're ever looking for another dynamic vocal mic of the same type at some point then try the Samson Q8. I think it's more robust and sounds better than the SM58. Plus it's pretty cheap.
 4. They look really interesting.
 5.
I've been watching Deep Impact synths on ebay lately and I've seen them go for around £350-£450 over the past few weeks. This one however, nearly made me fall off my chair (warning: don't sip hot drinks whilst opening link). http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...T#ht_826wt_1141
Akai then... (sorry)
 6.
I asked where the force was coming from, I didn't state that it had to come from the thumb of the fretting hand.
Well that's what you implied, seeing as you suggested that without the force from the thumb of the fretting hand there would be no opposing forces to the action of the fretting finger whatsoever. I really do not see how your original post could possibly be interpreted in any other way.
 7.
I think we've had issues before where you hadn't read my posts properly. I would recommend - again - you go back and read it again.
No. You asked where the equal and opposite force came from. I answered that question, you answered that question and now you're telling me you didn't ask that question in the first place.
 8. Unfortunately i only have a WTX500 and not a WT550 so i can't help you there. Sorry.
 9.
Good luck with that. I would imagine the force is actually coming from your picking hand levering the bass neck into your fretting hand.
Well there you go. You've clearly contradicted your original point that it's not physically possible to fret a note without any pressure from your thumb. Yes you could use the force of your other hand as well.
 10. Picking up guitar when you've played the bass i don't think is too hard. It's sort of like learning a 3rd language or something; once you've learned how to play one instrument, the second one is considerably easier especially if it's similar in terms of how it works.
 11.
So where is the equal and opposite force required to fret the notes coming from, or do you temporarily suspend physics for the purposes of playing bass?
The force required doesn't have to come directly from the thumb. Here is a simple diagram: F is the fretting force of the finger. This force is opposed by N1 which is the force of the players body on the body of the bass. T is the tension in the strap which opposes the moment effect of the fingering force (the pivot point is where force N1 is acting). P is the friction of the strap on the back of the player's body which opposes T in the x-direction and N2 is the player's body pushing on the strap at the back which allows friction to occur.
 12.
No, the song remains the same it's just the players that have changed. When I was playing originals in the 80s it was exactly the same. People will talk the talk but not walk the walk. Bands are happy pretending to be rock stars. They get to play in front of their mates and their mates get to say their mate is a really good (guitarist/singer/drummer/bass player/other). The music is secondary, it's all about the hang. If the band is playing gigs and the audience turn up and seem to like it then that is all that counts. I think Nigel is in a different situation as he is backing quality singer/songwriters who are getting quality players to back them, rather than a bunch on no hope wannabes.
+1. That's exactly what it is like with my mate's band. They're happy to play the same venue in Hull over and over again. Their singer is out of tune, their bass player can't play properly (luckily they're getting a better one) and every time they're asked to play a different venue, they suddenly have to cancel at the last minute because the singer gets a cold (can't see how it would make him any worse tbh lol) or everyone is busy doing something else so they're really destined to end up playing the same place over and over again because no where else is going to take them seriously. That's just what some bands are like. Not worth worrying about, at least you tried.
 13. It sounded pretty good. For the drummer i thought that he did seem a bit slow on the choruses and maybe a bit behind the beat with the kick in places but other than that fine. Possibly just trying to conciously not speed up too much on the first gig with a new band. Also i thought the vocalist sounded ok. Can't really complain except he was possibly trying to impersonate the singer out of pearl jam a bit too much which i guess is probably just a matter of opinion.
 14. I don't play bass that much so i don't think i'm in danger of getting that. Maybe you ought to go see your doctor (if you can afford it).
 15.
About 25%
or 20% depending on which way you look at it (let's not get into the "box of golf balls" argument again though eh lol)
 16. I think really it's not worth worrying about. If they really can't cast a critical eye over their own playing/singing even having listened to recordings of themselves then that's clearly their problems. They will just wonder why it is they can't get any better than they are now, even though it's plain for everyone else to see what the problem is.
 17. Nice bass. Are you sure a Kent Armstrong pickup is going to be much of an improvement over bartolinis?
 18.
I think he means the way that many manufacturers lead you to believe that you need a 15" for bass & 2x10/4x10 for mid & top. With the correct cabs you can get the same frequencies covered from either a 10", 12" or 15" cone (& Alex is working on showing that it can be done from an 8").
The shape and size of the speaker cabinet is far more important than the size of the speakers themselves. The cabinet itself is what gives you the low end frequencies.
 19.
Wow - this guitar would have looked awesome left that natural colour with the black scratchplate.
Look again- it's a 6 piece body...
 20. It's tempting to get it just so that i can get my sister to pick it up. She would hate that lol.
 21. What sort of idiot would sand the sunburst finish off an old bass eh? Looks great
 22. No one else would so I had to. Basically.
