Changing amp heads seems a drastic measure, can I recommend another way, use a Zoom B2, in the effects loop, in tuner mode. It can operate in mute mode, so no sound will go back into the loop and you get silent tuning. Assuming the DI is "post effects-loop" too. Side benefit is it has some decent effects if you wanted to use them.

I try not to pre-judge, cos I'm sure there are m*ngers and stunners in all camps... but from experience, bolt-on sounds right to me. My Conklin 7 is a bolt-on with a great neck join and a wenge/purpleheart neck, which is bliss for me. My fretless is a thru-neck though, and seems "right" for what i'm after. All my guitars are set neck, so go figure. (sorry I haven't contributed anything to this..)

I voted "no", I don't really see the point in a separate forum for a dozen of us to talk about brands of .165/.195 strings and accugroove cabs There are already forums well established for that, and as dood said, there ain't much traffic on them.

To the OP, why then 4? why not 3 or any other number of strings, what is the ultimate level of acceptability? Is a 5 string 20% less acceptable than a 4? ........ ........ How many keys are there on a piano? ... What kind of a piano? an upright? a grand?... how many frets on your guitar/bass? is any more than 20 too many?... etc, etc. These pointless debates crop up all the time on forums like these, and always have the same cliche's and conclusions. We are all (hopefully) musicians, and we all need an instrument to convey are inner feelings, via our chosen tool. So let's just make music to the best of our individual abilities, on our individually chosen instruments. Pete.

Hey Brother jones, well spotted!! yep they are two Mana tables, I'm a bit of a hifi nut and have a "stage4" under my Roksan Xerxes turntable, the other two were hanging around, so thought I would try 'em under the 2.5 cab, does sound a lot tighter, but that could just be the "boundry effect" Sparky, yeah, might be a way off till I look at the Acme's but will certainly keep you offerin mind, cheers. I finally replaced my Ashdown combo amp. A bit more portable and should be plenty loud enough for stage monitoring. I will probably get another of the same cab in the new year to get the full 300w out of the amp. (or maybe trade up for a 4ohm Acme B2 that I've been gassing for for a while) The Warwick head does sound really good, nice and warm & punchy, good subtle compressor and great EQ points. Certainly worth 170 quid.

Not in the market for it myself, but it does look like a nice bit of kit. Problem in the UK though is that the Marshall VBA400 is approx £400 cheaper. It may not have as many bells and whistles, but, (generalizing here) people who go for all valve heads don't need/want that. That said, if I had unlimited funds, I'd order a Nexus today!!

Yes, bought my Ibanez rd605 there last year. I think they made a mistake with the pricing back then though, I got it for £250! (they are now charging the more realistic £370). They seem to be the cheapest i've seen for markbass gear on the web. Very good service, took about 2-3 days from order to insured free delivery!

Yet another thread... Absolutely brilliant gig. Great setlist (knew it already though), killer playing by all, esp Neil's drum solo, and the atmosphere was electric. Didn't get to see his Ric though, what song had he used it on at other gigs? Just his main jazz, red jazz tuned to D for "Circumstances" and the Jaco for "MalNar"

I would go with the timber that gave me the best combination of visuals end comfort/weight. That said, i love wenge necks, because of the feel (hate painted necks!)

I know, there's been a few similar threads recently... So anybody going Sunday evening? I'm getting the train in from Liverpool, getting there 530ish (enough time for a pint somewhere first!!) Can't go wrong with Ibanez IMO. What sort of thing are you looking for? The already mentioned ATK is a great bass, I've got a RD605, which is a MM/J config (they can be had for £420ish). BTB's and the SR505 are fantastic modern style basses. Used is also a great way to go, Though if your into fenders, they aren't that common, MM sub (used) if you can find one, and has been mentioned Ibanez presstige models. My other recommendation would be Cort (yeah really!) they make all of Ibanez's higher end basses (among others) The GB75 and Artisian range are top notch.

After reading the OP i decided to try and learn this song (i just remember it first time round).... Wow, it's a bit of a workout. I find the 16ths not to be too difficult, but the first and last beat of the each bar, trying to get the rhythm right. Been at it for two days now and it's gettin there.

I've been using a BDI21 for a few months now, as a DI and a stompbox for some grit. They sound fine, are quite solid despite not being metal. One tip, which most users (and users of sansamps will say) is to go easy on the "blend" control, to stop the quite drastic mid-scoop. Also the bass/treble controls are active, so reducing their values and bringing up the level control will "boost" the mids.

I find staying off the interweb, and more specifically, bass forums cures the majority of the symptoms. Mind you I have no bass GAS, just amp GAS ('cos I ain't got one at the mo') ^_^

Ta Andy[/quote] I am taking it you don't read much standard notation from earlier post, [url="http://www.classtab.org/index.htm"]http://www.classtab.org/index.htm[/url] has loads of Bach cello pieces (and other classical guitar stuff) written in tab for guitar, you just need to make slight adjustment in fingering due to guitar tuning (not straight 4ths). As has already been said, you don't have to use the entire fretboard just because it's there. I've only been playing bass for about 15 months, but 6 (and now 7) stringers for at least half of that, so never become a 4 string expert before moving on. The longer you play on ERB's the more comfortable you will become with them, generally the tuning is always in 4ths, so the same scale/chord patterns apply all over the neck. I don't do much tapping (still in early learning), but I use chords all the time. One of the things I did to "discover" the range a bit more was to transpose some music from other instruments (classical guitar, cello, piano) to play on my 6 & 7. Good luck & keep at it. Pete.

I've got one, had it for 'bout a year, very good construction. Great playability, OK sounds. I think it would sound miles better with a preamp and/or pickup upgrade. I've de-fretted mine since buying my 7 string. Still gets plenty of "play time" At that price its a steal, I paid 300, and that was a bargain considering the build quality. (they are made in Cort's Korean factory alongside my Conklin GT7 and £500 Ibanez, among others)

I can read treble clef, but not really done much reading for bass since taking the instrument up, I will get round to it; (got "heaven knows..." by The Smiths down the other week, via notation. Have got some Bach stuff I could transpose to bass clef as an exercise, find that helps speed up the learning process.

When I first took up bass (about 14 months ago) I felt comfortable with fingers straight away, even though I'd been playing guitar (electric & classical) for 15 years. And although I can still play guitar both ways, I can't get used to a pick on bass. Probably 'cos I moved onto 6&7 strings, and have developed the "floating thumb" technique.
