  1. The best 112’s I’ve owned have been Bergantino and Barefaced. My preference being BF. Vanderkley are local to you. I’ve seen many good reports about them.
  2. There is a special place in hell reserved for NME journalists. It’s in the section labelled “pretentious and irrelevant bollocks”.
  3. If you are tired of bass, you are tired of life. Samuel Johnson
  4. Hi, what is the string spacing at the bridge, how old is it, what is the weight and give us some details about the pickups and pre amp?
  5. . . . . . . and then those pesky Danish mink come along and ruin the whole plan!!
  6. You can never underpower a cab. If you want a clean sound, less power into the cab gets you there.
  7. I know someone who has Barts and a John East Pre in his Overwater Jazz. Don't know which models but the sound of that bass is the best I've heard.
  8. Pedals don't interest me, but amps do. So far, the quality cab manufacturers (Vanderkley, Baer, Bergantino etc) who branched out into amp design and production have come up with some great amps, but have limited their sales by only focussing on "super" amps. These have all been way outside of my, and I suspect most people's, budget. Jim Bergantino seems to be the only guy who's making a commercial success of his amp project. I know Alex will come up with a stunning amp, I just hope there is an affordable version as well.
  9. IMO you won't be disappointed. I'm jealous, I have played several and they are all top quality with a stunning tone. The reasons I don't own one right now - all the used basses I've seen have been too heavy, ie up in the 10, 11, 12lbs area, and sadly I can't afford a new one!
  10. When learning anything, walk first then run.
  11. The "Cummings broke the law so I can too" defence didn't stand up in the first lockdown and I doubt similar positions won't will this time either. PS Edit to sort out bad grammar!!!!
  12. Sad news. KH was in a band called the Gods, featuring a very young Mick Taylor. He used to support many of the bands I used to see, Jeff Beck Group, John Mayall etc.
  13. Our band leader came up with the logic that we were being paid for the gig so it was work and we could carry on rehearsing in his shed/studio. The rest of us weren't so sure. Since the gig's been cancelled we have opted for a lay-off until the end of lockdown. It'll be a great gig when it happens, and the rehearsals were fun, just not now.
  14. I would imagine the magic is in the pre and power amp.
  15. First learn the song. The bass line should fall into place after that.
  16. I'd be interested to look at the new Sadowsky basses when they appear. My real wish is for lots of gigs.
  17. For my last recording project I DI'ed a TH500 into Logic. Two seconds to set up and the sound was much better than any of the preset tones the band suggested. My Lull PJ5 with flats and foam sounded the Dog's. Sadly "personalities" killed the project half way through the rhythm section stage!
  18. I'm jealous, I would love to be in a band playing Alan Spenner bass lines. He was a great bass player. I used to see him playing the pubs and clubs in Kokomo. Apparently he was Bryan Ferry's favourite Roxy bassist.
  19. At the end of the 90's I bought an SVT 3 PRO and Ampeg 210, 115 and 410 cabs. The 210 was my favourite of the 3 but I couldn't get away from a woolliness and lack of clarity that I didn't like. I put the amp through my Mesa Boogie RR 210EV and 115EV and it was like some one had taken several duvets off the rig, the sound/tone was great. Clear as a bell and full at all frequencies. It's not a scientific test but IME Ampeg cabs are OK if you want that sound but not much good if you don't.
  20. Depends. Always get the feel right, stop and start together, then it's up for grabs. I have no problem playing the original bass line, or parts of, when it's needed. If it's a cracking line I'll be up for it, but many numbers don't have unique lines, so there's no point in slavishly following those. My attitude is, it's me playing in the band so you get me playing the songs not copies of the 25 original bassists.
  21. Love listening to the voices and harmonies of these guys . . . . . . . .
  22. If you’ve mastered Sir Duke, have a go at Master Blaster, a great song with a cracking riff in the middle.
  23. Aretha is one singer I’d have liked to hear singing in person and l’d love to sit in the middle of a gospel choir at full blast.
