  1. I used to record demos for a songwriter at his home studio. He would run through the song, give us one or two practice runs and then record. He was a "capture the energy of the moment" guy and was always looking to use the first or second takes!! That's a lot of pressure when you are a "get better over time" type of player!
  2. Don't they all have the same hair cuts in NK? One bass I could live with but not that!!
  3. Some times warts n all is good, but I would be "repairing" for weeks if it were left up to me. My sense of objectivity goes out the window when the red light comes on. I always used to leave it up to the guys in charge to decide when we were done.
  4. If your moisture concerns are accurate, put the strings in a sealed plastic bag with a handful of uncooked rice.
  5. I put GHS flatwound strings on my Jazz bass as an experiment. IMO they made it sound too close to my Precision. I don't want two basses sounding the same so I put D'Addario NYXL's on the Jazz and it came to life.
  6. Listening to your playing can be enlightening. When minidiscs came out I recorded everything and used them as a learning tool. Sadly the recorder broke and I can't play them anymore. It would be interesting (maybe not!) to go back 20 years and compare.
  7. I know a few guys who get a good sound out of Musicman basses, but they're not for me. I prefer single coil pickups so I'd suggest a Jazz bass to go with your Precision.
  8. Didn't they put on an evening with Elvis, in the West End, with no Elvis? I seem to remember they had a hologram instead.
  9. I watched Otis Redding last night and Runrig a day or so before that. I have Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor, Cream and several others on the hard drive waiting. I hate to praise anything to do with Rupert Murdoch, but Sky Arts is a gold mine.
  10. I spent nearly 10 years with a Mesa Boogie 115/210 EV stack. Nothing wrong with mixing those cabs. Having said that I wouldn't buy that stack again. It was of its time and IMO these days you can do better. I prefer a couple of the modern "Super" 112's. Lighter, louder and excellent tone.
  11. If that's the one with Glenn Frey's son and Vince Gill? I saw it last time and it's worth seeing again.
  12. I think I'd change the proposition slightly, making music is the greatest thing in the world.
  13. That's pretty restrained. I keep up with developments and trends in the bass world. I'm interested in any improvements that are being made to basses, amps and cabs. With 1 Jazz and 1 P bass and I'm not looking for anything at the moment. . . . . . well maybe another Lull P5 with rounds!
  14. Loot, Exchange and Mart and Melody Maker were were the places to buy and sell back in the day. In the last 15 years I’ve bought but not sold through eBay. Bought from Bass Direct. Never used Reverb. Gumtree was a scammers paradise. Basschat is the most successful and safest place I’ve found to buy and sell bass gear.
  15. I have 2 basses and I’d use them on any gig. All my basses are bought to gig. That’s the only reason I own them. If a gig was rough enough to cause me to worry about my gear, I’d be more worried about my safety and probably wouldn’t be doing those gigs anyway. When my bass isn’t being played I’ll store it in the bag at the back of the stage, behind the gear. I’ll mostly use the P bass at home, because it sounds better at low volume.
  16. My PJ5 is #1 layout. Sounds pretty good to me.
  17. +1. You can hear a low B, even a low F#, on headphones. When you play low notes you are hearing the harmonics. . . . that's all.
  18. No new music? Several of my favourite bands have put out albums out in the last few years.
  19. Not if you use the volume controls correctly.
  20. Ian King does and he’s a member here.
  21. For 4 strings there's the Grosmann Travel Bass 4 and for a 5er the Kala U Bass California Solid 5. Both currently at Bass Direct, slightly more than your budget but maybe worth a look.
  22. So with acoustic guitars, even more, the only sonic difference can be the woods used.
  23. I'm not going to nit pick this contrarian post. What would be more useful for Sibob and the rest of us would be for a Trickfish owner to put up a post outlining his experience of those cabs.
  24. No. I have source tracks for every song I've played in a band for the last 20 years. I have them grouped together in sets and can run through the lot at home. It's much more interesting that playing scales and the technical stuff. Only one band leader has said he wants a rehearsal before we resume gigs, and that's for him not the rest of us. I'll get the usual phone call from the others asking, "Can you do the gig", followed by, "See you there".
