  1. I don't know this amp so I was looking at a photo of the back of the Rumble and the extension socket says, "8 ohm min, 250w", so my assumption was the other 250 was in the cab.
  2. As Phil says, it's better to put as much through the PA as you can. . . . . good luck getting Rock guitarists on board with that plan!! Is this the 210 combo? The Rumble 500 is 250 watts without the extension cab and 500 watts with the extension cab. I don't play Rock or "Hard Rock" whatever that is, most of the guitarists I play with are from a Blues/Blues Rock background and none of them are quiet enough for me to use a 250watt amp. I'll play at the lowest volume I can but theses days I rarely get FOH so I have to be able to cover everything from my rig. I use 800 watt amps and 1200 watts of cabs, just to keep the sound clean at whatever volume I need. It's not just about filling the room, the PA will do a better job at that, but you need a balanced sound on stage. If your guitarists are loud you have to match their level or you don't hear yourself. Buy a good set of ear plugs. It's a good point to get the rehearsals down to a lower volume level. You're not onstage and the whole point is to work together to improve as a unit. You can't do that when you're in pain from a guitarist who "needs to be this loud, to get my sound!!" I'm surprised when people say their 112 is enough for the hard hitting drummer in their band. We must have very different experiences and definitions of loud drummers!! If 250 watts will do then you're fine, if it isn't get the extension cab. Really, don't skimp on the budget for those earplugs.
  3. The only bass I've owned that didn't have rolled edges was a Musicman. It wasn't a big deal, just not my favourite for that reason. The rest, Lakland, Wal, Rob Allen, Lull, Sadowsky, Fender felt much nicer to play.
  4. If you know the intervals of the song, 1, 4, 5, etc you can play the song in any key. This is roughly how the Nashville numbering system works. I've been given songs to learn for a gig and been told, "Oh, didn't we tell you, we play this in E!" Usually changed to a key that is easiest for the guitarist to play! Finger positions you're familiar with go out the window and you have to rely on remembering patterns and intervals.
  5. It was a pretty cheap valve amp. I knew a couple of local bands who used them and my second band had the PA. I think we all got them from the same shop in Acton. I can't find anything about them on the internet.
  6. Small body Framus Star bass. 60 watt Nashville valve bass amp. 412 Crook bass cab. All pretty good gear for a learner and the aim from day 1 was to go gigging. I worked all summer to buy the bass and amp, then worked all the next summer to buy the cab.
  7. While a Barefaced Two10 would be the match of most 410's, I'd suggest the Super Twin. A 212 at just 5 inches wider and taller than the Two10 it'll be seriously louder.
  8. One day trying to sell on Gumtree gave me more hassle and stress than over 10 years on Basschat. Things don't always go as we would wish but in my experience this is a uniquely great place to buy and sell.
  9. Really? I would have thought it was a perfectly valid subject for discussion.
  10. I would buy the bass that felt good to play and sounded good across many styles, and then I'd EQ to the sound the band needed. If I couldn't get the right sound for a particular genre I'd just buy a pedal. IMO I've seen many basses being used in Metal. These basses are also seen in other genres so I'd guess the "extreme" sounds in certain styles of music would be down to the pedal boards used.
  11. +1 The sale isn't done until you've paid for and received the item. This thread isn't about dishonesty, has nothing to do with trust, and is all about the OP's disappointment, which is understandable. I've backed out of one sale half way through, something didn't feel right about it, and had several sellers change their minds mid sale. Someone even remembered, at the very last second (I had my coat on to go to the bank) that he'd forgotten he'd previously promised the amp to someone else!!. I've also been gazumped several times when trying to buy a house. A sale falling through at the last minute can be frustrating, but it's not unusual and is just part of buying and selling.
  12. OK. Are there any Jam nights near you, where other bass players go? You could talk to them about their basses. Or make contact with local bands to talk to their bass players.
  13. Don't make lists, go out and play all the basses you can find.
  14. You can't beat a good three tone sunburst with tort and rosewood.
  15. Tina Weymouth didn't play an instrument when she was co-opted into Talking Heads. So I'd guess she had a lot of help at the start, but by Stop Making Sense I'm sure she was up to speed. In their appearance on OGWT she's not overdubbed and sounds pretty good to me. When the show is an event in itself the soundtrack to the video will always be sorted out afterwards. All bands do varying degrees of post production. Some like Talking Heads and Earth Wind and Fire etc can be over-dubbing lots of parts.
  16. I'll always try to buy the best bass I can find and afford, then it's up to me to make it sound as good as I can. It's easier to do a that with better gear. Basses are just tools. Very special tools but they are only a means to an end and that is playing with other musicians and the gig.
  17. Maybe excessive "sweaters" could help themselves by wearing those grey gloves Scott Devine wears?
  18. What strings did you put on? How long do your strings normally last? My NYXL's have been on for 15 months, get played every week and still have life in them.
  19. IMO flats on a P bass is a natural combination. I've had flats on my Lull PJ5 since hearing Happy Jack's, about 7 years ago (wow, time flies!!). First Dunlop Precision flats and for the last 4 years TI's. I don't gig the PJ often but it's the only bass I play at home. Flats with foam under the strings makes a great sound at low volume.
  20. This looks like it's being aimed at the home market.
