I would buy the bass that felt good to play and sounded good across many styles, and then I'd EQ to the sound the band needed. If I couldn't get the right sound for a particular genre I'd just buy a pedal. IMO I've seen many basses being used in Metal. These basses are also seen in other genres so I'd guess the "extreme" sounds in certain styles of music would be down to the pedal boards used.

+1 The sale isn't done until you've paid for and received the item. This thread isn't about dishonesty, has nothing to do with trust, and is all about the OP's disappointment, which is understandable. I've backed out of one sale half way through, something didn't feel right about it, and had several sellers change their minds mid sale. Someone even remembered, at the very last second (I had my coat on to go to the bank) that he'd forgotten he'd previously promised the amp to someone else!!. I've also been gazumped several times when trying to buy a house. A sale falling through at the last minute can be frustrating, but it's not unusual and is just part of buying and selling.

OK. Are there any Jam nights near you, where other bass players go? You could talk to them about their basses. Or make contact with local bands to talk to their bass players.

Don't make lists, go out and play all the basses you can find.

You can't beat a good three tone sunburst with tort and rosewood.

Tina Weymouth didn't play an instrument when she was co-opted into Talking Heads. So I'd guess she had a lot of help at the start, but by Stop Making Sense I'm sure she was up to speed. In their appearance on OGWT she's not overdubbed and sounds pretty good to me. When the show is an event in itself the soundtrack to the video will always be sorted out afterwards. All bands do varying degrees of post production. Some like Talking Heads and Earth Wind and Fire etc can be over-dubbing lots of parts.

I'll always try to buy the best bass I can find and afford, then it's up to me to make it sound as good as I can. It's easier to do a that with better gear. Basses are just tools. Very special tools but they are only a means to an end and that is playing with other musicians and the gig.

What strings did you put on? How long do your strings normally last? My NYXL's have been on for 15 months, get played every week and still have life in them.

IMO flats on a P bass is a natural combination. I've had flats on my Lull PJ5 since hearing Happy Jack's, about 7 years ago (wow, time flies!!). First Dunlop Precision flats and for the last 4 years TI's. I don't gig the PJ often but it's the only bass I play at home. Flats with foam under the strings makes a great sound at low volume.

This looks like it's being aimed at the home market.

My experience too. The tone just kills. If you like being told you sound good, get a Sadowsky.

Just been listening to Kevin McCormick's bass lines on Keb Mo's Reflection album. What a great player and largely, to me, unknown bassist. A brief search turned up this piece or wonderfulness. . . . .

I'd love an Overwater bass but the weight has always been the issue that's prevented me from getting one. A good strap makes you feel more comfortable. They can address problems like neck-dive, etc, but many straps also add to the weight! My wide leather Harvest strap adds at least a pound to the weight I'm carrying. If weight is a problem either strengthen your shoulders by doing exercises (I've been doing this and it really works) or get a lighter bass.

I have 2 basses, a Lull P Bass and a Sadowsky Jazz, but only gig the Jazz. If I owned more basses they wouldn't be gigged, so there's no point.

Seems to me you're trying to make your P bass sound like your MM and Sei. It won't, because P basses don't do that.

I've been a P bass player since I bought my first in 1969, but since moving to 5 string basses, in the 90's, my preference has been for the extra dynamics and range of a 2 pickup bass, basically a Jazz bass sound. I do have a great 5 string P bass but my goto basses for gigs have been MM, Wal, Lakland and now Sadowsky. On the few occasions I record these days, I still prefer the sound of a P bass. It's OK to prefer one or the other, or both. . . . or neither!!

Don't drag your thumb. If you move your hand with some pressure still in your grip you'll be sliding your thumb and a sticky neck can cause this. Release all the pressure in your left hand, let go and move your thumb.

The original interpretation was that if an official thought a wood was on the restricted list he would seize the instrument. It was then up to you to prove it wasn't. I'm pretty sure that hasn't changed. So "mess" or not it is clear that it's our responsibility to ensure we get our instruments safely through Customs. So you're smarter than Customs? Mine have been sitting safely in my sock drawer for the last 50 years. Since the day I bought my P bass in March 1969.

Tell the cameramen to de discrete and keep away from close-ups of you.

I used to run a TH500 into 2 Berg AE112's and was louder than a loud thing. Then I ran it into 2 Super Compacts and it was even louder. I did need more volume so I now use an AG700. That's the bottom line, whatever you are using, if you get to the stage where you need more volume the answer is always a more powerful amp.

So, I'm assuming you've tried a different amp with the cab? And you have said your amp works with different cabs, so give Alex a call and take the BB2 over and get him to look at it.
