1. As I said in those threads, if you think that BF cabs are fragile you haven't done your homework. And bertbass is correct.
2. At this level of gear better doesn't exist. These are some of the best cabs made. Your personal preference will be what decides you to pick one over the other. I'd also add Bergantino to the list.
3. I don't mind 2 or more guitarists. How well they play is the deciding factor for me. Unfortunately and economics these days invariably means there's only 1 guitarist on the gig.
4. Currently under offer. Cheers Chris
5. When the gen 1 Compact, the one that travelled around the country in the early days, came back to Alex it wasn't much good for anything so he crash tested it by throwing it down a 1 story flight of stairs a couple of times. He did tell me how many time before it broke and I've forgotten, but it was far in excess of anything even the Who (in their heyday) would do to a cab. If it's done properly, light does not equal weak.
6.
Am I wrong?
Yes. If the band wants more bass. . . . step up and bloody well give it to them!
7.
has anybody found an internet tab that shows the correct way of playing the main riff? I haven't
It's Tab, so that's hardly surprising.
8. Is anyone else in the band playing that line? Like the guitarist? Better make sure you are both playing the same thing. FWIW everyone in my cover band played the riff with a G.
9. * * * * Now Sold * * * * This is the bass I thought I'd never sell.. . . but I am. My USA Lakland 55-94 Deluxe is now for sale. This bass was made by the original team lead by Hugh McFarland (the land in Lakland). This has a blue translucent swamp ash body, quilted maple top, 35" quarter sawn maple neck and birds-eye maple fret board with ebony dots. There are 22 frets, the original Bartolini pickups and Bartolini NTMB-L 3 band pre amp. The volume pot has a pull-for-passive option and it can be strung through the body. The string spacing at the bridge is 19 mm, the nut width is 1 7/8” and the weight is 9lb 6oz (4.28kg). Currently strung with Dunlop Super Brights 45-125. When I emailed Dan Lakin he confirmed the date of manufacture to be 1997; "That bass was made in May of 1997 - my records show it was blue. It was a very early 5 string for us. One of the first 70 made in the 35" scale" Dan I have owned this bass since 2003 and for 8 years this was my sole gigging bass. it is in very good condition and has been carefully looked after, but there is some minor player wear. In June 2014 I had a fret stone and set up done by the Gallery, in Camden. That turned a great bass into a fantastic bass. It comes with an SKB hard case. Currently strung with Dunlop Super Brights 45-125. All my gear lives in my smoke free back room and this bass has always travelled to gigs in my car. If anyone wants to try this bass PM me and we can work something out. I can post (at buyers expense) but would prefer not to and can deliver within 30 miles of Kingston upon Thames, or further if I'm going that way. Something non bass related has come up and I'm raising funds, so no trades thank you, this is sale only.
10.
Love the engineering and thought that go into barefaced cabs, but i could not live with something built out of 9mm plywood !.....
If you love the engineering that much you'd know why Barefaced use 9mm ply and how they make it work.
11. Macca, Roger Daltry and Stevie Wonder still sing their songs in the original keys. That's quite a feat in itself at their ages. I've been told Macca doesn't even warm up. I believe the other 2 take regular singing lessons to keep their voices fit. With a 5 string bass I can play any song in any key but the original keys can sound better. The riffs mostly sit better in the original key. At Motown they regularly recorded the songs a couple of keys higher than the singers wanted because they liked the sound of those guys "reaching" for the notes. That might work with world class singers but maybe not so much down the Dog and Duck.
12. I have a Fender catalogue from about 20 years ago and there are over 50 signature Strats listed. It's marketing. Do what all these "famous" guitarists did. Buy the standard model and make your own changes. Create your own signature instrument.
13.
Played with and wrote many good songs for The Band
I have most of the Band albums and think RR is a good songwriter but a guitarist worthy of a signature instrument? I'm not sure about that. There are even question marks on the song writing front. He is alleged to have stitched up the rest of the band when it came to the song writing credits of many of their songs.
14. If you want to play the original Rock n Roll you need to swing. It's not about the notes it's about the feel.
15. I've been using ACS for just over 10 years and they have kept my damaged and ringing ears safe in that time, during some pretty loud and extensive gigging. I'd be interested in anything that was better, but at nearly twice the price I'd need some serious convincing that Pro Guard was worth the extra.
16. I guess the classical operatic scores aren't transposed depending on the leading lady? Very few singers in our world are going to train to that level, so what you get is, some voices are limited by physiology and some are just limited by their lazy owners.
17. I see we've strayed from "hit" records, so I'll put up Hubert Sumlin's general guitar playing and solo on Howlin' Wolf's Spoonful.
18. I learned to love my ER15's. They were so much better than the foam plugs I was using before. I'm now on PRO17's and still able to hear everything from a stage whisper to the thunderous racket coming from the other side of the stage. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a perfect ear plug. They all take something away, as well as the volume. If you want to gig and you have hearing damage then it's just something you have to deal with. I haven't used in ears but excepting that IME nothing works better than the ACS plugs I've used.
19.
Not an issue for me. My preferred Jazz bass tone is everything on full.
I'm with you. I don't begrudge anyone who wants to drown in EQ possibilities and options, but I try to get a good tone and then the aim is to stick with it for the next ten years, at least.
20.
Do any of you happen to know if there's any difference in the relative height of the A style vs the Kickass?
Sorry, but I don't know this. Maybe an email to Hipshot would help.
21.
There are people who were successful in Pop who moved into Jazzier genres who never really went back; Elvis Costello, Andy Summers, Colin Towns, Georgie Fame etc.
And then there's Van Morrison!
22. That's a Wal Pro 2. I believe the Pro 1 and Pro 2 were Wal's "budget" line.
23.
I think this is perfect illustration of one's man's loud being another man's not loud enough.
This is why I don't understand the definitions people use when they post they can fill a room with a 210 or use a 210 with a "hard hitting" drummer! The "hard hitting" drummers I play with require at least 410, 610, 215 or (thankfully these days) 2 Barefaced cab rigs.
24.
I have to say, playing in a big band is something else when you are literally immersed in the sheer power of a horn section. It's quite an experience.
Oh yes. My experience isn't in Big Bands, but in my youth I played in many Soul-Jazz bands with between 2 and 5 piece horn sections. Nothing sounds as good as Trumpet/Trombone/Sax and especially Baritone at full chat. Unfortunately the finances don't allow such gigs in the world I inhabit these days. I'd also agree that Jazz is a great vehicle to broaden your knowledge and ability which can then be applied to all other genres. But I particularly dislike Jazz players who try to fit "jazz" into everything they play, or treat their training as a means of filling out the arrangement with as many notes as they can. The guys coming out of the music schools these days can be guilty of that. There's nothing worse than playing a Rock Blues gig (which I sometimes do with a "jazz" drummer) and having flams and press drum rolls appearing in the most inappropriate places. If you are any good your training in Jazz and those techniques will have given you the ability to underplay with the confidence of knowing you can blow everyone off the stage. Wilton Felder, Carol Kaye and Nathan East are great example of guys who can play Jazz and don't when it isn't appropriate. Ooops. I think I've gone off the topic a little.
25. One of my Aguilar TH500's is now for sale. This great amp is rated at 350 watts at 8 ohm, 500 watts at 4 ohm. It is loud, warm, full and fat with a punchy vintage vibe. I bought it to use with my Bergantino cabs and now it works perfectly with my Barefaced cabs. I have owned this amp since 2014. There are 2 very light scratches on the top and other than that this amp is in perfect condition (9/10). All my gear lives in my smoke free back room and this bass has always travelled to gigs in my car. If anyone wants to try this amp PM me and we can work something out. I can post (at buyers expense) but would prefer not to and can deliver within 30 miles of Kingston upon Thames, or further if I'm going that way. Something non bass related has come up and I'm raising funds, so no trades thank you, this is sale only.
