1.
There's a story I heard many years ago about a drummer who was asked to dep on an originals gig in a pub up in central London for the paltry sum, even then, of £50. The band leader sent him a cassette tape of the songs (as I said, it was a few years back) but with a busy schedule, he only made time to listen to it in his car on the way to the gig. It was fairly straight forward stuff, so apart from one or two hiccups, he discharged his duties quite well, or so he thought. Afterwards, the band leader took him to task about these and other minor infractions. Feeling aggrieved at what he perceived to be nit-picking, when asked to explain himself, the drummer said "Well, I gave it the fifty quid listen, didn't I?!?"
Initial PS, by any chance?
2. If you can make the pain bearable, do the gig. If you need to change the lines, change them. I did a gig after a skirting board incident with a sharp implement that meant that night I could only play root notes. But I played them well, so everyone was happy.
3.
Just interests sake, what amp are you using with the SC's? I'm thinking about getting a pair of them.
I was using either a Thunderfunk 750 (now sold) or an Aguilar TH500. The TH500 has been my main amp for about 3 years and I've had the SC's for nearly 2 years. I bought 1 cab from Merton and liked it so much that I ordered the second cab the next day. If you're style is anything like mine, Duck Dunn meets Nathan East with a little John McVie and Willie Weeks thrown in, you'd love it. I could probably gig with just 1 cab but I like the sound of both so I usually run 2 cabs. I haven't pushed them hard and still I can get loud very quickly. I've not been beyond noon on the gain and 1 o'clock on the master and we were very loud that night. Where are you? I'm not playing for a few weeks, but if you're in the South East I've got some gigs coming up at the end of September. You could have a listen.
4.
From the recent documentary it sounds like it was pretty hellish!
I believe those buses had no heating which is why, in the middle of a northern US winter, the aircraft was so appealing. On the long haul gigs the guys slept in the bus, sitting up on the hard seats.
5. I don't use one but I've come from Berg cabs which have very tight low end. I tried a Thumpinator with the Bergs and it made no difference to the sound at all. With the Bergs there was no muddiness or boom, even on the worst stages. As you know I went from them to a BB2 and didn't like the amount of big low end. The SC's are much better but I'd like the option of reducing the low end even more. I'm thinking/hoping that raising the "floor" of the low end via an HPF would do this for me. On bad stages I always feel that trying to EQ out a bad low end also alters the rest of the sound too much, rather than just eliminating the problem. Maybe it's my lack of ability with EQ but using an HPF to tighten up just one part of the sound might be a solution. I know I could buy a separate HPF but so far I've only seen fixed ones. I'm wondering if an adjustable HPF would be a better option. I'd also be hoping that a Barefaced HPF would be better than the competition. I might also be barking up the wrong tree. Not for the first time!!
6. If you have a car-crash gig because the dep wasn't good enough or didn't put in the time to get up to speed then you didn't choose the right dep. This only works if there is time to prepare and the guy can rise to the occasion. Everyone needs to know where these guys are because gigs are not as plentiful as they used to be so turning one down should be the last option, not the first.
7.
I liked to sit in the back because it was quite obvious that, in the front, the thin metal of the Commer van would crumple under any impact and your legs would be crushed.
Yep. That is the sensible thing to do and how I would think today. We knew Martin Lamble the drummer who was killed when Fairport's tranny overturned. Both the people killed in that crash were sitting in the front seats.
8.
Do you really need 2Ω capability? AFAICS it's main use is to run more than 2 cabs without needing special series/parallel leads making up and with high sensitivity cabs like Barefaced is this really necessary?
I just had an eye on the 4 ohm cabs Alex makes. Somewhere someone might want to run 2 of them. My experience is that the SC's are so sensitive that 2 of them can match the volume I was getting out of my previous Berg 312. I had two 2 ohm capable amps, my Thunderfunk 750 and a D800, and while I mostly used 4 or 2.67, I did use the 2 ohm option a couple of times. This amp won't be cheap so its features and capabilities will need to be extensive to compete. I agree an adjustable HPF could be a decider for me.
9.
It's for the person that accepted the gig to get a dep, as it had already been made clear that the OP would not be available.
It doesn't matter who gets the dep as long as he does a good job and fits in.
10. Just get a dep and everything is covered. A band should do all the gigs it can so cancelling everyone's gig just because one person can't do it is the least acceptable course of action in my book.
11.
The Beatles too had a Commer.
Yep. Ex GPO vans were also very common. My usual place was on the engine cover beside my mate Derrick, the driver. IIRC we had a top speed of 50 mph. Me and Derrick used to play chess driving on the motorways. When it was his turn I steered. We thought we'd made it when he got a Ford Transit SWB with some mk10 Jag seats in the back.
12.
In one of the Facebook videos Alex states that he sees the cabs that he has currently covering 99% of bassist's needs and that he has no plans to add or replace any bass cabs as of yet.
He's right. He got it covered for us. I haven't thought about cabs in over 2 years. Well, I briefly looked at an SM and a Two10 but that doesn't count. A more useful thread might be a list of options and features we would like to see on the BF amp when it appears. I don't do much Facebook so this has probably already been addressed there, but I'd like a real 800 watts, big heft, 2 ohms and an adjustable HPF.
13. This is an ex school bus and not designed for long trips. BB King used one for years to do over 300 gigs a year. There was a Motown tour in the early 60's that used a bus like that. They had something like 40 dates in 40 days and they had anything up to 600 miles between gigs. These tours were the reality of how how live music operated in the US back then.
14. I would usually do the gig. For me that's the only point of playing bass or being in a band, but whenever I have told bands that I can't do a particular date and it clashes with a gig we just get a dep. It pays to have a good dep up your sleeve. I told one band leader several times I couldn't work on one date and he got a gig anyway. We found a dep when I stuck to my guns and ultimately that was the reason I was fired. That's always a possibility if you work with a-holes.
15. Like it. Beats the old Commer van we used to drive to gigs in.
16. I want the implementation of Graphene cabs. And I want it now.
17. "Dream amp"? There are lots of those.
18.
Drives the Mrs bonkers the clank clank
. . . . and me!
19. I think you might right. Apparently this was a Grover Washington song with Bill Withers contribution only being the vocals and some of the lyrics. The band is Grover Washington's and an eye opener for me. Good call.
20. Simple and perfectly formed bass line? In spite of the thousands of perfect recordings that came out out of the likes of the Stax, Fame, Malaco and Muscle Shoals Studios: Mustang Sally, Respect Yourself and Groove Me etc, I'd choose Just The Two Of Us by Bill Withers, with the wonderful Melvin Dunlap on bass.
21.
I wont buy it then on your say so.
I didn't say that. But I did say anything Duck Dunn is good, so do what you want to do. I'll certainly be checking it out.
22. Anything Duck Dunn is good. . . . but if you can't get his bass lines from listening to the records you need to sharpen up your playing by ear more than you need transcrpitions.
23. I de-fretted my Framus Star bass when I was a kid. It sounded OK, very DB, which what I was intending, but I also reduced the tone available by about 80%. An outcome I hadn't properly thought through! Sounds like you're bored and looking for something to do. I'd sell the bass and make a better fretless.
24. According to your original post you like your current bass. It feels "comfortable" to play and sounds "lovely". You've already got a good bass there and you are way too early in the cycle to start with all that GAS crap. So put your head down and focus on playing bass and being the best bass player you can be. This bass is not holding you back. Think about upgrading when you've got to a point where you need more out of your bass that the current instrument can give you.
25. Go and play a Jazz and find out if you prefer it to your current bass.
