1. If you want to play the original Rock n Roll you need to swing. It's not about the notes it's about the feel.
2. I've been using ACS for just over 10 years and they have kept my damaged and ringing ears safe in that time, during some pretty loud and extensive gigging. I'd be interested in anything that was better, but at nearly twice the price I'd need some serious convincing that Pro Guard was worth the extra.
3. I guess the classical operatic scores aren't transposed depending on the leading lady? Very few singers in our world are going to train to that level, so what you get is, some voices are limited by physiology and some are just limited by their lazy owners.
4. I see we've strayed from "hit" records, so I'll put up Hubert Sumlin's general guitar playing and solo on Howlin' Wolf's Spoonful.
5. I learned to love my ER15's. They were so much better than the foam plugs I was using before. I'm now on PRO17's and still able to hear everything from a stage whisper to the thunderous racket coming from the other side of the stage. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a perfect ear plug. They all take something away, as well as the volume. If you want to gig and you have hearing damage then it's just something you have to deal with. I haven't used in ears but excepting that IME nothing works better than the ACS plugs I've used.
6.
Not an issue for me. My preferred Jazz bass tone is everything on full.
I'm with you. I don't begrudge anyone who wants to drown in EQ possibilities and options, but I try to get a good tone and then the aim is to stick with it for the next ten years, at least.
7.
Do any of you happen to know if there's any difference in the relative height of the A style vs the Kickass?
Sorry, but I don't know this. Maybe an email to Hipshot would help.
8.
There are people who were successful in Pop who moved into Jazzier genres who never really went back; Elvis Costello, Andy Summers, Colin Towns, Georgie Fame etc.
And then there's Van Morrison!
9. That's a Wal Pro 2. I believe the Pro 1 and Pro 2 were Wal's "budget" line.
10.
I think this is perfect illustration of one's man's loud being another man's not loud enough.
This is why I don't understand the definitions people use when they post they can fill a room with a 210 or use a 210 with a "hard hitting" drummer! The "hard hitting" drummers I play with require at least 410, 610, 215 or (thankfully these days) 2 Barefaced cab rigs.
11.
I have to say, playing in a big band is something else when you are literally immersed in the sheer power of a horn section. It's quite an experience.
Oh yes. My experience isn't in Big Bands, but in my youth I played in many Soul-Jazz bands with between 2 and 5 piece horn sections. Nothing sounds as good as Trumpet/Trombone/Sax and especially Baritone at full chat. Unfortunately the finances don't allow such gigs in the world I inhabit these days. I'd also agree that Jazz is a great vehicle to broaden your knowledge and ability which can then be applied to all other genres. But I particularly dislike Jazz players who try to fit "jazz" into everything they play, or treat their training as a means of filling out the arrangement with as many notes as they can. The guys coming out of the music schools these days can be guilty of that. There's nothing worse than playing a Rock Blues gig (which I sometimes do with a "jazz" drummer) and having flams and press drum rolls appearing in the most inappropriate places. If you are any good your training in Jazz and those techniques will have given you the ability to underplay with the confidence of knowing you can blow everyone off the stage. Wilton Felder, Carol Kaye and Nathan East are great example of guys who can play Jazz and don't when it isn't appropriate. Ooops. I think I've gone off the topic a little.
12. One of my Aguilar TH500's is now for sale. This great amp is rated at 350 watts at 8 ohm, 500 watts at 4 ohm. It is loud, warm, full and fat with a punchy vintage vibe. I bought it to use with my Bergantino cabs and now it works perfectly with my Barefaced cabs. I have owned this amp since 2014. There are 2 very light scratches on the top and other than that this amp is in perfect condition (9/10). All my gear lives in my smoke free back room and this bass has always travelled to gigs in my car. If anyone wants to try this amp PM me and we can work something out. I can post (at buyers expense) but would prefer not to and can deliver within 30 miles of Kingston upon Thames, or further if I'm going that way. Something non bass related has come up and I'm raising funds, so no trades thank you, this is sale only. 13. My Thunderfunk TFB750-A is now for sale. This amp was hand built in the US in 2011 and runs 305 watts into 8 ohms, 630 watts into 4 ohms and 800 watts into 2 ohms. It weighs 21 lbs and is in perfect condition. This is a powerful solid state amp with a fantastic clear, full, fat and well defined tone. This amp has the factory upgrade (upgraded capacitors and improved cooling) making it the equivalent of the TFB800-B2, which allows safe 2 ohm and 800watt running. It is currently mounted in a 4u SKB rack which is functional but not great, so I'll throw that in for £10. 14. Hit songwriter, hit producer, leader of a world class band, great and unique guitarist. That's 4 pretty good tricks right there.
15. Yes. Morado is also called Pau Ferro. I put Morado because that's what Sadowsky called it when I got in touch with them for details about the bass.
16. My Sadowsky Metro RV5 Jazz is now for sale. It was built in 2005, a 3 tone sunburst with tort pick guard. There is some player wear on this bass. In mid 2017 I had Martin at the Bass Gallery give it the once over. He tweaked a few things and did a set up and fret stone. It now plays beautifully. The pre amp (incorporating the VTC) creates that huge Sadowsky tone. The frets are in top shape and the neck is straight and very stable. Currently strung with DR Nickel Lo-Riders 45-125. Specs are as follows: - 34” neck - Alder body and maple neck with Morado fretboard - Sadowsky hum cancelling J pickups (60’s location) - Sadowsky 2-band pre amp, VTC and true bypass passive switch - 21 frets - 19mm spacing @ bridge - nut width 1.875" - Radius 12" - Dunlop straplock buttons - weight is 9lb 6oz (4.26kg) - Includes original Sadowsky soft case Controls are: - Master volume - Pan pot (pickup blend) - Treble roll-off (VTC) pull for passive option, ie pre-amp true bypass - Boost only tone controls - Stacked bass and treble (bass at the bottom) All my gear lives in my smoke free back room and this bass has always travelled to gigs in my car. I bought it from Basschat in March 2017 because I'd always wanted a Sadowsky Jazz after playing several at the Bass Gallery. This is a reluctant sale of one of the best sounding basses I've owned, but due to shoulder and back issues I need to move to a lighter bass. If anyone wants to try this bass PM me and we can work something out. I can post (at buyers expense) and can deliver within 50 miles of Kingston upon Thames, or further if I'm going that way. The only trade I would consider is a Sadowsky NYC weighing less than 8 1/2lbs. Apart from that bass, this is sale only. I prefer cash or bank transfer in that order. No international shipping. UK sale only. Edited because my original photos have been hi-jacked and taken hostage by Photobucket. More photos available on request.
17. The Jazz doesn't bother me, but I draw the line at all those bloody banjos.
18. I really don't see the problem with this bridge. But if you have to change it I'd go for a Hipshot A Style. I have these on several basses.
19.
Do all musicians embark on a journey that, eventually, ends up with jazz?
No.
20. I have never owned or lifted an SVT but I have use hired ones on tour (with lots of roadies) and they really are a force of nature. I can understand why they cornered the market and have stood the test of time, but they have never been an option for my world. I did own an Ampeg 215 at one point and I could hardly get it from the car into the gig on my own. One of my more crazy buying decisions! I notice that, these days, many of the bass players I watch (Nathan East, Willie Weeks etc) are touring with the Aguilar equivalent, the DB750 and DB810.
21. Have you called any guitar repair shops? They might have a supply of small parts like this.
22. Very nice. These are incredible basses.
23. . . . . something by Les Dawson, maybe?
24. I had an admittedly low volume rehearsal through a Markbass (Asian) 112 combo last night and it sounded as good as anything I've used in years.
25. . . . . in tab?
